Race Report.......Out of the many road races that I have taken part in recently, I have to say that this one was excellent. It was a well organised race and everything seem to go really well. Plenty of parking, loads of stewards, chip timing, etc. In fact, you really got the impression that if 1,000 runners had turned up then they could have handled that many with ease.
The biggest suprise this year with this race was the drop in numbers. A total of 280 ran on the day and that compares to roughly 400 last year. That's a 30% drop. Why??
Make no mistake....This is an excellent race. Entry on the day was €20 and you got an excellent dry-fit running top for that as well. Mind you, it's bright enough to be seen from space but that's another issue ;o)
Why the drop? Are there too many other races on? Lack of publicity?

Huge drop in numbers compared to last year normally the trend is the opposite way round.Question is why??

I did this race last year and wouldn't dream of doing ti this year. Obviously I was not alone! Last year's very poor organisation, lack of stewards and disgraceful shortage of water left a very sour taste for an awful lot of people. Add to that a very difficult course and a time of year when there are numerous races for people to pick and choose from. I understand that runners doing the 5km course today went in the wrong direction again this year as the stewards were not on the course in time!! Here in the East Cork/West Waterford area we are spoilt with the fantastic athletic clubs we have and the races they are organise. People just won't settle for second best, especially when they have to pay €20 for it! Don't think that the numbers will be up next year either I'm afraid.
Well I had no problems at all with the organisation or stewards. I thought it was a great race, a nice, if tough course, cracking t-shirt, good food and glorious weather - what more could you ask for?!!

We wondered about the lack of numbers too... saw hardly anyone from Cork there yesterday. Glad to hear other people saying it was a tough course!!
Thought it was well organised. Water at quite a few points and clear markings everywhere. Glad the lap of the town was at the start of the race & not the end!!
Must of my buddies didnt do it 'cause they are doing longer runs for Cork marathon at this stage & cause there are so many other 'mid-length' races around.
A guy I met at Dungarvan in Jan said this race was his highlight of the year in 2009 so was determined to go along & check it out. It's nice but I still love Ballycotton!!!
The 'running boom' has led to a vast increase in the number of road races being staged in all areas. The calender has probably reached a saturation point and therefore the numbers at races will flatten off or even decrease going forward.
Great race, excellent organistaion, easy parking and all close by, very well stewarded, you always felt safe out there, 3 water stops worked for me. Absolutely stunning country side, the highlight being when you cross over the river Finisk, and go through the gateway and onto tree lined roadway I felt like Robin Hood, even though this is the start of the last big climb, yes it is a tough course, but it's a good honest test over 10 miles. Great finish & chip timed, great tee shirt, loads of grub served up with a smile, they even had porta-loos and lots of them(expensive items). And we all got to line up with two legends, John Treacy and Catriona McKiernan. Suffice to say I loved it :-)

This was my 1st time doing this 10 mile race and i thought it was really well organised with plenty of water stops and well signposted. The course was a good test over 10 miles but I found the last 2 miles tough. beautiful scenery as well I really enjoyed it. The drop in numbers probably due to the cork marathon being so near I rem last year this was my reason for not doing it. Thumbs up from me!!!
