Kerry...Couch to 5k starts in Castleisland 7th October

From the organisers...An Ríocht AC........Couch to 5K returns to An Ríocht Athletic Track on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 7pm. The start date is October 7th. at 7pm.

A Walkers club option has also been added this season and is designed for people who want to exercise but have no aspirations to become a ‘jogger. This is a no pressure exercise group that lends itself to being a great social outlet. By getting out on the track on Tuesday and Thursdays you will be part of a real feel good atmosphere with music to help you on your way.

Couch to 5k is aimed at those who, in the past, perished at the thought of physical movement of any kind. Its aim is to transform those who struggled to move much more than from couch to fridge into regular exercisers with an ability to jog or even jog and walk 5k.

Everybody works at their own pace and with such the crowd that descends on An Ríocht for the session, one will always have someone beside them working at the same pace as themselves.

Another unique aspect of couch to 5k at An Ríocht is that everyone, literally from 8 to 80 is taking to the track at the same time. This would be hard to do in any other setting or sport but children and teenagers are joining the parents and grandparents for the session, which is fantastic to see!

Some people find that it is easier on the body to walk on the track under the safety of flood-lighting, some find that the buzz of mass participation keeps them going, others are pushed by the music but undoubtedly there is a great energy around An Ríocht from 7pm on Tuesdays and Thursday!

For those of you who have already completed a 5k or can run for 20 minutes without needing a break this is for you! The 5k-10k training group aims to get you to break through that 5k barrier. With a mixture of proven techniques including distance, intervals, hills and strength work this should be a challenging yet thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Training will end coming up to Christmas with a Charity Run, the proceeds of which will go to St. James Hospital Dublin in memory of the late Donal Curtin of Knocknagoshel.

The cost per night is just €2.

Reminder...Killarney 10 mile road race - Sat 27th Sept 2014

For anyone interested in a 10 mile race, the inaugural Killarney 10m is coming up next Saturday the 27th of September. The primary purpose of this race is to raise funds for the development of a 200m outdoor track in Killarney which will be used by all of the local athletic clubs.

The race starts at 1:30pm and you can enter online here... http://register.sportstiming.ie/ps/event/Killarney10Mile

If you are in the Killarney area, you can enter at Feet First 28 High St or at the Kerry Outdoor Sports Shop, Fairhill, Killarney.

A number of high profile former athletes have given their support to the event. One of those is Gillian O'Sullivan who represented Ireland in the 20km race walk at the Sydney Olympics and won a silver medal in the same event at the World Championships in Paris in 2003..........I think the new track in Killarney is a very exciting project. It gives the local community a great chance to make exercise part of their lifestyle. One of the main barriers to people maintaining their fitness is accessibility to facilities. Now people will have a fantastic facility at their doorstep. What I really like about it is that for children and young adults exercise can become a routine no matter what the time of year or weather conditions. It encourages adults and children to keep a healthy lifestyle. In addition if there are children who excel in athletics, they can maintain their training all year round. I know I would have loved to have such a facility when I was starting out.....Gillian O'Sullivan

Report from Clonmel AC.......
Kevin Maunsell wins Kilsheelan 10K..........In glorious weather the Kilsheelan 10k took place today with 187 participants starting. The pace was strong from the whistle as a trio of Clonmel AC athletes dictated the pace and they were Niall McCormack along with the Maunsell brothers, Kevin and William. These three athletes last clashed over the Clogheen 5k with the finishing order of Niall, William and Kevin, how were they going to fair out today?

As they approached Ballypatrick they reached 5k in 16 mins 9 secs. Then Kevin went to the front and put in a very strong sustained effort that eventually shook off both Niall and William and he kept that pace going all the way to the line to win in 31 mins 45 secs, fantastic running and setting a new course record by beating the old record of Patrick Hogan (Ferrybank) of 31:47 set in 2012. Then we had William Maunsell running well to finish 2nd in 31:51 and Niall McCormack 3rd in 32:38. David Ryan of Clonmel AC won the men’s over 40 award in 35:35 with Tom Bourke of Clonmel AC winning the over 45 award in 41:14 and Bernard Feery of Fethard winning the over 50 award in 38:59.

In the Ladies race Angela McCann of Clonmel AC went into the lead early on in the race and made every stride a winning one when coming home to win in 40 mins 23 secs with her training partner Siobhain McHugh 2nd in 40 mins 52 secs and Suzanne Shine of Clonmel AC 3rd in 43:56. Yvonne O Connor of Clonmel AC won the Ladies over 40 award in 46 mins 2 secs with Anna Byrne of Clonmel AC winning the Ladies over 45 award in 48:13 and Joan Guidera of Clonmel AC winning the Ladies over 50 award in 53:23.

The organising committee would like to thank the Gardai, the Civil Defence, stewards and anyone who helped to make this event such a success. The Ladies committee are to be complimented on the Post Race refreshments they were appreciated by everyone.

I'm not sure what the story is with this one. I'm a bit shocked to be honest...just 31 finishers! It had an AAI licence and was properly measured by Jones Counter. There was a charity run in Kilnaboy but the numbers there weren't huge. Where was everyone? Was the €15 entry fee too expensive?

Notice...Hercoileán Adventure Challenge, Castleisland, Co.Kerry - Sat 11th Oct 2014

From An Ríocht AC...Castleisland Rugby Club and An Ríocht Proudly Launch: Hercoileán...Saturday 11th October 2014

Hercoileán is a military style challenge course, 7.5km in distance. Think military bootcamp meets childhood fantasy of taking on the world and getting pretty messed up doing so. This style of event has become all the rage and it’s time that we in the island take it on!!

Competitors will be faced with a variety of obstacles as they make their way around the course. Obstacles will test the body and mind but while doing so are sure to make you laugh out loud and leave you with a feel good factor!!

It is sure to be a truly unique event and makes a great change from the regular 5 or 10k runs. Hercoileán can be competed or just completed with teams and individuals having the option of taking on the clock or putting aside the competitive aspect for the sake of simply having the craic…..also very important!!
Teamwork: It’s true, strength comes in numbers, usually anyway!! Hercoileán can be done as an individual test but we recommend that you partake as part of a team!! Put together a team of 3 and take on the course together. It will mean tackling each and every obstacle together as well as having someone to curse your way around the course with!! Once completed, it’s the perfect excuse to get together for a celebration of your athleticism, toughness and heroism on the day….or simply a time to revel in your combined ability to look ridiculous whilst overcoming obstacles.

Festival Feel: There is sure to be a festival atmosphere throughout the day around the town. Hermitage Green will headline the after party in the marquee at An Ríocht. Tickets can be purchased from An Riocht for €10 or free in your race pack when you enter Hercoileán.

From West Limerick AC.......
The Demesne Newcastle West was the venue for the first cross country of the season on the last day of August 2014.First race off was our Fit4life race. This was the brain child of Liam Healy club chairman and it turned out a major success. It was a non competitive race for newcomers to cross country over a two mile course and it was great to see runners take on cross country for the first time.

Second race was our Ladies 5km event. Top three were Tracey Johnson, Noelle Ahern and Fiona Burke. Tracey had a fine run and was pushed all the way by our very own Noelle and Fiona who are naturals over the grass.Next in were Paula Collins and Rita Brouder also West Limerick Ac. That made it four West Limerick ladies home out of the top five. Next home in the green and white were Carmel MacDomhnaill 8th, Karen O'Brien 10th, Tara Carr 11th, Joanne Kelly 13th and Barbara Kelly 14th. Great to see so many ladies out on the day. When you have four in the top five it goes without saying West Limerick took the team prize followed by Dooneen Ac.

Final race for the day was the Mens 8km race which was five loops of the one mile course. When you see the top three athletes in this event running for clubs in Dublin, Cork and Kerry you know this event has potential. First home was Aogan MacDomhnaill who was a very popular winner ahead of Michael Dunlea and Tim O'Connor. These three had a battle throughout the race with Aogan making the telling break on the final lap. In fourth spot was Paul Fitzgerald closely followed by Dermot Kearns in fifth and Ger Guina sixth. Next home for West Limerick were Denis Hayes 12th, Liam Hurrell 13th, Niall O'Riordan 22nd, Declan O'Keefe 24th, John Barrett 27th, George O'Sullivan 30th, Gerard Dore 33rd, Gerard Donovan 34th, David Condan 36th, John Barrett 37th and Kieran O'Connor 39th. It was great to see so many of our own runners out today representing the club with pride. In the team event Limerick Ac were clear winners with 39 points, 8 points clear of West Limerick Ac in 2nd place. The winning Limerick Ac team were Paul Fitzgerald,Vincent O'Brien,Keith Ryan and Keith Daly. It was great to see a strong Limerick contingent in the race with Limerick Ac, Bilboa and Dooneen represented.

Not everyone can run when you are hosting an event like this and thanks has to go to all club members and friends of the club who helped out on the day whether you were on the computer, donated a spot prize, Ballygowan for supplying the water, took entries, set out the course, marshaled, on the pr system, gave out the spot prizes or helped feed people. Thanks to every one and hope ye all come back next year to make it a bigger and better event.
