Report from Clonmel AC.......
Brian Maher wins Classic MSD Be Well 4 mile race
The MSD Be Well 4 mile Classic took place on St Stephen’s Day in good running conditions, mild, no wind and light rain to keep the body cool throughout the route. The route had to be changed due to a funeral.  There was a fantastic entry of 414 athletes and spectators were treated to some great performances.

Right from the start a group of three made their intentions known and they were Kevin Maunsell of Clonmel AC, Sergio Ciobanu of Clonliffe Harriers AC, previous winner of this race in 2009 (19:10) and 2012 (19:17) and the eventual winner Brian Maher of Kilkenny City Harriers AC who also won this race in 2004 (19:31), 2006 (18:54) and 2007 (19:04), a talented group. Kevin set the pace after Silversprings Roundabout with the other two athletes in his slip stream. They stayed this way stride for stride all the way around the route and just after Hotel Minella with approx 400m to go Sergio was leading going into the final bend with the other two athletes in hot pursuit and each athlete giving it everything as they were hopping off the ground. In the final surge for the line Brian edged clear with Kevin 2nd and Sergio 3rd, brilliant performances and a fantastic spectacle to watch especially over the final 200m as they came over the crest of the final hill and brilliant to see three talented athletes giving it everything in the pursuit of victory. For the record Brian Maher won in 19 mins 3 secs with Kevin Maunsell 2nd in 19 mins 4 secs and Sergio Ciobanu 3rd in 19 mins 7 secs, brilliant performances all round.

Then we had Patrick Lynch (KCK) winning the Junior Men’s race with a brilliant run when 4th overall in 19 mins 52 secs, a talent to keep an eye on. Brian McMahon (Clonliffe Harriers) was 4th Senior man in 20:12 while James Ledingham (West Waterford) was 5th Senior man in 20:19. The Maters Men awards were won by the following athletes:
1st 0/40 Nigel O Flaherty (Clonmel AC) 22:08, 2nd 0/40 Brian Long (Clonmel AC) 22:57, 1st 0/45 William O Dwyer (Dundrum AC) 22:17, 2nd 0/45 Dermot Hayes (Dundrum AC) 23:02, 1st 0/50 Tom Blackburn (Mooreabbey Milers AC) 22:18, 2nd 0/50 Denis Kelleher (Leevale AC) 24:09, Tommy Moloney (Thurles Crokes AC) who won the first running of this event in 1988 in 19 mins 16 secs showed he can still mix it with the best when winning the over 55 award in 25:14, 1st 0/60 Tommy Cahill (Clonmel AC) 26:18, 1st 0/65 Eamonn Crowley (Clonmel AC) 32:33, 1st 0/70 Myles McHugh (Clonmel AC) 34:09 and Zach Anderson (Clonmel) was 2nd Junior in 23:05.

Competition was also very good in the Women’s race and here we had Siobhan O Doherty (Borrioskane AC) running a brilliant race when winning in 22 mins 14 secs and Siobhan has been a great supporter of this race over the years as she won it on a number of occasions like in 2006 (23 mins), 2008(22:56), 2011 (22:55), 2013 (21:50) and last year in 22 mins 17 secs. Claire Annan (Clonmel AC) was 2nd in 23 mins 31 secs with Sally Forrestal (St Joseph’s) 3rd in 24:32, Aine Roche Clonmel AC) 4th in 25:06 and Anne Marie Boland (Clonmel AC) 5th in 25:54.
