The annual Tipperary Women's 10k Mini Marathon was held in Thurles on Sunday the 25th of Sept 2016 and attracted and attracted a field of 599 runners and walkers. While 599 is a very good number for an event like this in Tipperary, the numbers are down on previous years as can be seen from the chart above.

This follows a trend for a lot of other events in Munster which show peaks around 2012-2013 and a gradual decline since.

Kerry...Results of the Killarney 10 mile road race - Sat 24th Sept 2016

The annual Killarney 10 mile road race was held on Saturday the 24th of September 2016 and attracted a field of 241 runners. Considering that there was a Yellow weather warning in force for heavy rain, the numbers are pretty good as many will have decided at the last moment to give it a skip. Last year, they got 237 finishers on a nice sunny day so the potential is there for this event to grow in numbers.

Kerry...Results & photos of the Kerry 24 Hour, 12 hour & 6 hour Endurance Race - Sat 24th Sept 2016

This 24 hour, 12 hour and 6 hour endurance running event was held in Tralee on Saturday the 24th of Sept 2016. This was the first year of this particular event and the only 24 hour race in the country outside of the 24 hour Irish Championships which are held in Belfast every year.

While it was originally scheduled to be held at the track in Castleisland, it was subsequently moved to a local park in Tralee.

In total, there were 63 participants spread out over the three events... 41 in the 24 hour, 14 in the 12 hour and 10 in the 6 hour. Ten runners managed to break the 100 mile barrier in the 24 hour.

Some of the background to the event can be found HERE

As Ultra events go, 63 is a pretty big number so the initial year has to be considered a big success. If you are interested in doing it in 2017, keep an eye on the Run the Kingdom website

Kerry...Results & photos of the Dingle Marathon & Half-Marthon - Sat 3rd Sept 2016

Catching up on another result. The annual Dingle Marathon and Half-Marathon was held on Saturday the 3rd of September in mixed weather conditions.

The top 3 in each race are shown below.

1 01:13:13 John Meade, M
2 01:16:18 David Ryan, M
3 01:18:39 Niall Lynch, M, Team Donore Harriers
1 01:29:40 Ciara Wilson, F
2 01:31:25 Joan Mahony, F, Team waterford ac

2 02:51:14 Sean Murphy, M, Team Trim AC
3 02:53:44 Denis Keane, M
1 03:05:15 Hannah Fothergill, F, Team Limerick AC
2 03:24:23 Catherine Sharpe, F, Team NRG Sydney
3 03:28:20 Laura Rooney, F, Team Merck

I'm not 100% sure what the full story is with the results as I haven't really kept up to date with them. Someone e-mailed me to say that the results were incorrect and that complaints were being removed from the Dingle Marathon Facebook page.

In previous years, the results seemed pretty ok and all of those are listed on the race website for people to see. This year, they used Titan Sports for the timing and the results format on their website is pretty dire. Instead of a proper list which you can scan through, it's more of a searchable database. Their website is so bad that the results can't event be linked to directly.

The thing about the Dingle marathon is that it is a very popular event which brings a lot of visitors into the town for the weekend. They have a nice website and some of the images from the race are great. It's just a pity the results service is so bad.

One quick look at the race calendar shows a multitude of races with many being held for many different reasons. This one however is special. The objective of this race is to raise funds for a new athletics track in Killarney.

At the moment, the only athletics track in Kerry is the full size 400m track at the grounds of An Ríocht AC in Castleisland. It's an excellent facility and is used for all the major track & field competitions in Kerry.

It is however a 15 mile trip from Killarney. The distance in itself isn't an issue when it's for the likes of say an occasional competition but driving children there back and forth twice a week is another issue. What is required is a local facility in Killarney that is easy for people in the town and surrounding area to access.

What is proposed is the development of a 200m micro track and a floodlit all weather pitch area which will be situated on grounds leased from the St. Brendan's Trust (St. Brendan's College Killarney).

The track will have 4 lanes and have a tartan surface. While it will be measured correctly...i.e. 200m in lane 1, the track will not be a standard 200m track like say the indoor track in Athlone IT. The gradient from lane 1 to 4 will be much reduced as the track will also be used by athletes with special needs. In terms of training however it is excellent for juveniles and adults.

One special feature will be the straight section that you can see at the top. This is about 120m long and will be properly measured, marked and certified. This will facilitate all sprint events such as say the 100m, women's 100m hurdles and men's 110m hurdles. They also have plans for a long jump area as well as a facilities for pole vault, high jump, shot putt and a throwing cage.

One might ask why didn't they opt for a full size 400m track but the amount of land required and the costs involved would be in a completely different league. This new facility will suit the training needs of most of the local athletes be they seniors or juveniles.

As a project, I don't see why it couldn't be replicated elsewhere around the country? It is something a lot of other athletic clubs might consider.
