Notice : Run Killarney Half-Marathon & 10k - Sat 20th July 2019

One of the biggest races in Kerry is the annual Killarney Half-Marathon & 10k and it's coming up on Saturday the 20th of July 2019.

https://runkillarney.com/?utm_source=runninginmunster&utm_medium=bannerad

The half marathon starts at Moll's Gap at 8:00am and follows one of the most scenic roads in the country to the finish line at the Gleneagle Hotel in Killarney. Participants in the half marathon will be taken by bus from Killarney to the start line at Moll's Gap.

What makes this half-marathon unique is that the road is closed and this is the only time of the year that a race is held on this road. Normally, you can't run on this road as it's way too busy with traffic going from Killarney to Kenmare.

The race website is HERE

The 10k starts at 9:30am and finishes at the Gleneagle Hotel and takes in a loop inside the national park near Muckross House.

Entry for each race includes...Customised finisher medal...Dry fit T-shirt...Chip timing... Prizes... Massage at finish line... Hot tubs... Post-race party... Officially measured course

Note that the road from Molls Gap to Killarney will be closed to traffic and it's the only time of the year that you can run on this busy road.

From the organisers.... Since our inaugural event in 2016 we have set out to create the best possible running experience available to athletes in this country. Through a mixture of hard work and the dedication of a large voluntary team we have succeeded in firmly establishing ourselves on the annual racing calendar. We were recently honoured to be awarded ‘Best 10K race in Ireland 2018’ in the Running in Ireland Awards.

Thus far, we have held three sellout events and have raised over €24,500 for Marymount Hospice in addition to €38,000 for other local voluntary community initiatives.

The event is a true celebration of family and community in East Cork with over 300 volunteers of all ages helping on the day. Over 1000 athletes take part annually with a free BBQ and family fun day awaiting participants at the finish line.

One of the themes of this year's event is "Go Green With ECHM". It is an environmental awareness campaign whereby we are placing a strong emphasis on recycling, reducing waste and introducing renewable energy solutions with electric cars leading out the athletes. We are also hoping to introduce non-plastic solutions to hydrate the athletes as seen in the recent London Marathon (https://edition.cnn.com/2019/04/26/business/london-marathon-seaweed-water-bottles/index.html). This is proving to be a very popular initiative with our other partner sponsors and the athletes themselves with an unprecedented demand for entries this year.

We are busy planning for this year's event which will be held on Saturday 10th August 2019! We are depending on the generosity of our sponsors in order to build on the success of the event and to help us in achieving our goal of becoming the best running event in the country. To help us in this goal we are delighted to have Cork 96FM on board as our official media partners again this year.

The map below shows the full marathon route. It starts near Rostellan Woods and between miles 3 and 8, it takes in a lovely stretch by East Ferry. After 10 miles, it's most out on quiet country roads with some nice coastal views from miles 14-22. For the last few miles, you are looking over the harbour.

The half-marathon route is on nice quiet country roads to the south-east of Aghada...

The 10k course is out and back...
