Notice: Coillte 10k road race, Dundrum, Tipperary - Wed 3rd July 2019

This popular 10k race in coming up in the village of Dundrum, Co.Tipperary on Wednesday the 3rd of July 2019. In terms of fast 10k courses, this must surely be one of the fastest in Munster if not the country.

Dundrum is a small village just 9 miles or so west of Cashel in the south of Tipperary...

Organised by Dundrum Athletic Club, this race is noted for being a flat fast course. As well of there being no hills, the course consists of multiple long straight sections rather than the more usual twists and turns. I've previewed many courses on this site but this one is really fast.

Entries......The entry fee is €15 on the night.

The map below shows where everything is. For spectators...note the points A, B and C. If you move between these points which are just over 100m apart you can see the athletes at approx. 0.25miles , 2.4miles, 3.2miles and again at 5.4miles.

Course Preview......The 10k course is essentially two laps of a 5k loop. A full preview of the course with maps, description, photos, etc can be seen HERE

Many races have different traditions. Some give out t-shirts, some mugs. In the case of the Coillte 10k, they give out a quality embroidered hand towel given to every finisher. and they have been doing this for over 20 years. Even on years where they had run out of towels on the night, they hand delivered them to these people in the following weeks.

The Tim Crowe Trophy is presented on the night to the first Tipperary Athlete in honour of his 24 national titles won in the early 1900s, who was from the village of Dundrum.

34th  Coillte 10k Dundrum
Wednesday the 4th of July at 8pm the Coillte 10k Road Race in Dundrum Co Tipperary will be ran for 33rd consecutive year by the local Dundrum Club. The club is delighted to have Coillte once again as our main sponsor. With Dundrum surrounded by trees and forest trails for running and walking developed by Coillte over the years it’s appropriate that Coillte are involved with us in the healthy sport of running. The semi state company has been involved in this race every year since it was set up in 1988 which is greatly appreciated by the club.

A new category been introduced this year as part of the 10k race by popular demand is a two by 5k relay for separate men and women teams to accommodate runners who may feel not up to running 10k.This event would be aimed at the non competitive section where the first runner would run the first lap of the two lap course change their armband to their second runner at the 5k mark in the village and the second runner would then run the second lap.

The race which also incorporates a 5K for juniors (19 years or under on 31/12/2019) is based around the Scouts Complex in the village where the club has its athletics facilities. The race has prizes in the usual categories with a specially Embroidered Souvenir Hand Towel for all finishers. For Tipperary athletes there is the added incentive of the Tim Crowe Memorial trophy (kindly donated by Dominic Moore) for the first Tipperary athlete to finish the 10k.The present holder been David Mansfield Clonliffe Harriers. This year the club has once again linked up with Niall O’Sullivan’s Premier Timing for entries and result data to handle the ever increasing numbers of runners every year.
The layout of the two lap course makes it ideal for spectators to see the race and encourage the athletes as the race progresses. One section of the course in the village allows viewing of the race at four different stages by moving about one hundred meters.

Michael Hassett St Catherines has had the most number of men’s victories with six wins. While in the women’s race Siobhan O’Doherty Borrisokane is in a class of her own with her tenth win achieved last year. Kevin Moore is the only local club athlete to have won the race  in its 32 year history achieved in 2014 and he is hoping to make it back from his work in the UK for the midweek fixture. Dymphna Ryan also from the local club has had a hatrick of excellent second places between 2013 and 2015.
