Tipperary...Results of the Clonmel 6k - Wed 27th Mar 2013

This was a dry run for the main 6k race series coming up in April in that people could run with their watches and see what their times were. In the 4 races in the series, watches are not allowed and points are allocated based on how far people finish away from their estimated finishing time.

Report on Wednesdays run from the organisers....
Report on Practise Run...Please find attached the results of last night’s race, the Practise run, over the 6K course. It was great to see such a large entry, 187 athletes running at their own pace over the course, last year we had 156 participating. Indeed well done to all the Captains who had their teams out practising. Indeed well done to the many first timers, hopefully you enjoyed running this distance at your own pace and it could be the start of a budding running career. Indeed many a running career started with the athlete first taste of running this series of 6ks.

That is the purpose of this series, where an athlete can run at their pace and set their own times and try and achieve it, for many it can be a Personal Best. We all know that today’s Personal Best is Tomorrow’s Motivation. So hopefully you will be motivated to participate in this series and we look forward to seeing you all on Wednesday next.

Kerry...Results of the Ballybunion Half-Marathon and 10k - Sat 30th Mar 2013

Almost 750 people turned out for these two races in Ballybunion in North Kerry. On what was a cold but dry day, there were 545 in the 10k race and 202 in the Half-Marathon. These numbers are down on last year so it looks as if the new Tralee Marathon which was on in mid-March most likely had an impact.

In 2011, the 10k had 506 finishers. That increased to 686 in 2012 but this year, it has dropped back by about 20% to 545.

In the Half-Marathon, the drop has been even more dramatic. In 2011, it was 319. That went up to 378 in 2012 but this year, the numbers have dropped by 47% to 202. Considering that the Tralee Marathon had the option of doing a Half-Marathon then it's probably safe to assume that a lot of local people did that one instead.

In terms of hard cash, that means that this race took in about €11,600 less than last year, a drop of about 36%.

Preview of the Boherbue to Kiskeam 4 mile road race...Mon 1st Apr 2013

The Jack O'Keeffe 4 mile road race is coming up in North-West Cork on Easter Monday, the 1st of April.

This 4 mile road race starts in Boherbue and finishes in the village of Kiskeam. As you can see from the map below, it's a central location for a lot of people...i.e. N Cork, Mid and N Kerry, W Limerick.

This map below shows the exact location on the R577 road....

If you are coming from the direction of Mallow then take the N72 road to Killarney and turn off right at this junction...

Follow this road to Boherbue and you'll see the Co-Op store on the far side of the town where the race will start. Keep driving and 4 miles later, you'll see the entrance road to the local GAA grounds as you enter the outskirts of Kiskeam..

The race is being organised by Gneeveguilla AC, one of the largest athletic clubs in Kerry. The entry fee is €15 on the day and there is a huge array of prizes on offer. These are usually in the form of vouchers for the Supervalue store in Boherbue and are pretty generous. The prize for the first man and woman is €300 each.

Plenty of parking available at race HQ in Kiskeam
As this is a point to point race, there will be a bus available to take runners to the start line in Boherbue. If you are going as part of a group in a few cars then it might be as well to arrange your own transport......leaving one car in Kiskeam and drive back to Boherbue.

Note that the race starts at 3pm. It would be advisable to arrive in plenty of time to allow for the bus transport, especially if it has to make more than one trip.

As far as I know, a cotton T-shirt will be given to all finishers at the end of the race.

There will be the usual refreshments of tea, coffee, sandwiches, etc afterwards as well.

A full preview of the course can be seen HERE

Prizes......again a reminder......if you win a prize then make sure you spend it in Boherbue before you drive home.

Clonmel 6k race series...April 2013

This 6k road race series is organised by Clonmel AC and is coming up on Wednesday evenings during the month of April 2013. Some details below from the club....

Clonmel AC is delighted to announce that Morrison BMW Cahir is once again sponsoring our Inter Firms Road Race series and we would like to thank Gary Morrison for such sponsorship. Last year’s event attracted 60 teams and it was a brilliant success.

This year’s series gets underway on Wednesday 27th March at 6.15pm with a practise run over the route while the event itself gets underway on Wednesday 3rd, 10th and 17th of April. Then on Wednesday 24th of April we will hold the Annual Handicap race.

This is an event where you the athlete set the target, you decide every night what your finishing time is and then you have to run as close to that time to help your team. For instance, you could predict 30 mins for the 6k and then run the race in 30 mins 1 second and you score one point for your team. Then you have another athlete on your team who predicts his finishing time as 21 mins and runs the race in 21 mins 31 secs, he scores 30 points for the team. The three athletes that score the lowest points will count on your team, it is not based on your finishing position it is based on your time and what you predicted.

For this event to run fair and proper, anyone caught wearing a watch or Ipod, their team will be penalised heavily.

Now is the time to be organising your team of five athletes with the best three performances (closest to their predicted times) to count each night.

This sort of competition allows every athlete to set their own pace and regardless of where they finish in the race they can all help their team to win the competition.

For further details please contact Niall O Sullivan at 086 1660888.

The Course...The race starts outside the LIDL car park on the Waterford Road. The athletes then run down the Waterford road to the Bulmers Roundabout, turning right and going over Sir Thomas's Bridge, then right again and along by Kilganey, the Coleville road and finishing outside the entrance to the Loreto Convent. The same route that was used for the recent County Tipperary Novice mens 6k road championships.

Another date for your Diary is Wednesday 1st May when Clonmel AC will promote our first race in Cahir in association with Morrison BMW with the FUN4RUN 4 mile road race. More details to follow.

More details.......
The Practise run takes place on Wednesday 27th March with the closing date for the series on Friday 29th March. This is a Series that caters for all levels as every athlete set their own target, the predicted Finishing time, and then run the route without a watch or I phone etc. as regards Individuals not on teams, when they register for the event we will put them on teams. We also cater for the individual who only wants to run one or two of the races; we will charge them 5 Euros per night to participate. All levels are catered for like last year where we had athletes completing the course between 21 mins 28 secs to 47 mins 52 secs.

On Wednesday 27th March we will hold the Practise run over the 6K Course. For this race and this race only of the Series, athlete’s can wear their watches.

Entries will be taken in the Suirside Car Park near the Gashouse Bridge from 5.45 pm onwards and then athletes can jog down to the start at Lidl, on the Waterford road, approx 1Km. There will be no Parking near the Loreto Convent, plenty of parking available in the Suirside Carpark. We will be sending the athletes off in groups of 10 at approx every minute and all athletes must obey the rules of the road at all times. There will be no entry fee for the Practise Run.

Also NO IPODS – if an athlete is caught with one while in the race, the team will be penalised. Remember it is for your Safety and that of the other athletes that we are preventing the use of IPODS.
As regards the 6k series, starting on April 4th and Individuals not on teams, they can compete, by just sending their name by text – 086 1660888 or by email – niallfosullivan1@eircom.net and they will be allocated to a team.

We will also cater for individuals who may just want to run one or two nights and do not want to be on a team. In that case just come down and enter early on that night and they will be charged 5 Euros a race.

Registration each night of the series will take place in the Suirside carpark only from 5,45pm onwards, there will be no registration at the LIDL Carpark. We would ask all team captains to come early and register your teams and their predicted times each night.

Please note closing date for entries is Friday 29th March. The teams can be emailed to me by Friday 29th March and the entry fees can be paid on any of the nights. Make the cheques payable to Clonmel Athletic Club

Three Counties Race Series...Waterford/Tipperary/Kilkenny...Apr-Aug 2013

The Outfield Sports 3 Counties Challenge is a popular race series which runs from April to August every year. This year, the organisers Carrick-on-Suir AC have included an extra race to make it 5 in total covering the three counties of Waterford, Tipperary and Kilkenny.

Location of race series.....within easy driving distance of Waterford, Dungarvan, Clonmel, Cashel, Thurles and Kilkenny.

Here is some additional info from Carrick-on-Suir AC.......

Big Changes at 3 Counties!
Carrick on Suir A.C.’s 3 Counties Challenge has firmly established itself in the South East Running Calendar since its inception in 2007, with the series growing from a single race with 100 runners to last year’s successful 4 race series with close on a thousand participants. One of the keys to their success has been the clubs ability to change and improve the series, and 2013 will continue that trend with a new race (Now making the 3 Counties challenge a 5 Race series), a new venue and some new sponsors.

Because of the expansion, the Series will now start on Friday 26th April with the first running of the Faugheen 5Km Road race, kindly sponsored by Bobby Fitzgerald Accountants. This flat course will be held on the famous Faugheen 50 Motor bike circuit in the pretty Tipperary village, and we are sure it will become a runner’s favourite very quickly.

This will be followed closely by the second new addition in the series, the  O’Neill Pharmacy Tom Jordon Portlaw 5 Mile Road race on Friday 8th May. This race has been organised by the Portlaw Red Cross for several years, with the help of Carrick A.C., so it was a natural progression to include this fantastic 5 Mile  Co. Waterford course in the Series. Feedback from runners in the last few years has been extremely positive about this course, and we think many of the series participants will be eyeing this race for a P.B.!

The third race in the series will see us return to County Tipperary and the ever popular Carraig Hotel Deadman’s 5 Road race on Friday 7th June. Now in its eighth year, this race starts outside the beautiful Ormond Castle in the Centre of Carrick on Suir, taking in a scenic 5 Mile run around the Deadman’s Boreen (hence the name!)  and finishes on a lovely straight stretch passing the tree-lined Town Park.

The penultimate Race in the Series sees us visit County Waterford again, and the picturesque village of Rathgormack for the Auto Power Rathgormack 5 on July 12th. This challenging, undulating course is an ever popular addition to the series, thanks mainly to the beautiful scenery of the Comeragh Mountains and the superb home cooking in the Hiking Centre after the Race.

Finally, the Series will end in County Kilkenny with the Morris Oil Piltown 10Km Road race on Friday 2nd August. Another scenic trek, the race starts in the grounds of the Kildalton Agricultural College, winding its way down by the Lake and tree-lined avenue before a circuit of the flat roads around Piltown. Another firm favourite in the series, 2013 will be the sixth running of this race.
The club is delighted to welcome back local specialist running store Outfield Sports of Carrick on Suir as the Series sponsor for the Seventh year (now promoting its new website, hence the outfieldsports.ie 3 Counties Challenge), and is delighted that International Sports Brand Adidas are also involved as title sponsors. We are very grateful to our sponsors for their continued support and it is great to see the same names supporting our series year after year. As usual, the message from the club is for all of the series runners to return the support to these businesses who have been good enough to help us, despite the harsh economic climate.

The Prize fund for the series will be in excess of €10,000, with €200 First prize for the Men’s and Women’s races and prizes in all the usual age categories. There will also be a Team Prize at each race as well as spot prizes all the way down the field. There will also be a race souvenir for anyone running 4 out of 5 races, as well as a €25 voucher for Adidas Running Footwear at Outfield Sports.
Pre Entry can be availed of at www.runireland.com , and up to date information will be available on the club website at www.carrickroadrunners.ie and on our club Facebook page.

Despite all the changes this year there are a few things will remain the same:- A race series that is ideal for new runners to progress from 5km to 10 km through the summer, well stewarded, accurately measured courses, good grub after the race and the famous Carrick AC welcome to all our runners. Looking forward to meeting all our friends (New & Old) this summer in the sunny South East!

Results of the Tralee Half and Full Marathon...Sat 16th Mar 2013

The Tralee International Marathon  got off to a fine start with blue skies and sunshine greeting the runners as they lined up for the inaugural event. Roughly 1300 runners took part between the full Marathon and the Half-Marathon.

The route for the full Marathon headed north-west to Ardfert before heading south-west towards Fenit and then back east towards Tralee. Overall, it was suprisingly tough with a lot of small hills along the way.

Most of the roads were not closed although this really didn't cause much of an issue except perhaps for the section between Fenit and Tralee. There were so many runners on the road that the traffic that was there wasn't going anywhere fast. I'm not sure if any of this traffic could have been diverted but it did have a feel of there being no traffic management along this section.

The course mile markers were clearly visible with most of them in the correct spot. However, the ones from about 15 to 18 miles were certainly out, some probably by as much as 200 metres.

The finish was as good as you could get in any Marathon as it approached Tralee along the canal and great support on both side close to the finish line.

No doubt some things could have been approved upon but for the first event, it seemed to go very well. With the sun shining, it really is a very scenic route with all of the mountians along the Dingle peninsula clearly visible. Unless you are from the area, the area to the north-west of Tralee is probably one that most people won't have visited and it's really nice.

At present, there are no shortage of Half-Marathons and full Marathons in the country. With this full being in March, it seems to have have found it's own niche in that it's not really clashing with anything else. Whether it loses some of it's novelty in future years remains to be seen but at least it got off to a fine start.

Race notice...Boherbue-Kiskeam 4 mile, NW Cork - Mon 1st Apr 2013

Looking ahead to some more races coming up in the near future, this one might be of interest to anyone west or north of Cork City, in Kerry or south and west Limerick. The Jack O'Keeffe 4 mile road race is in North-West Cork on Easter Monday, the 1st of April.

This 4 mile road race starts in Boherbue and finishes in the village of Kiskeam. As you can see from the map below, it's a central location for a lot of people...

The race is being organised by Gneeveguilla AC, one of the largest athletic clubs in Kerry. The entry fee is a flat €15 on the day...i.e. there are no online entries with additional costs. There is also a huge array of prizes on offer and these are usually in the form of vouchers for a local co-op and are pretty generous.

Race notice...Castleisland 10 mile road race - Sun 21st Apr 2013

This is the second year of the Lee Strand Kingdom Come 10 mile road race in Castleisland, Co.Kerry. Considering it's location, it's sure to attract a lot of runners from Kerry, west Limerick and the general west Munster region. Castleisland is only a short distance from Killarney and Tralee and the race should be of particular interest to runners there.

This race is organised by An Ríocht Athletic Club, one of the major clubs in the county.

Sunday 21 April 2013...Event Start Time: 11.am

Bibs can be collected anytime from the 1st April from the clubhouse.

It's worth mentioning also that money raised from the road race will be used for maintenance of the outdoor track in Castleisland. It is the ONLY 400 metre track in Kerry and is used by athletes from clubs in Kerry and west Limerick. If children are going to be involved in the sport then they need access to proper local facilties like this. Perhaps for that reason alone, this race is worth supporting.
