From the organisers.....We had a great day today in Cashel for the first ever “Rock Run” in aid of St John the Baptist BNS school. The weather gods were definitely smiling on us as the sun shone brightly throughout the event. 175 participants registered for the run/walk and included adults and young people of all ages. This created a fantastic atmosphere from start to finish.
A word of thanks to all the participants who performed so well, and to everybody connected with the school who helped out so willingly both today and for the past month. A huge effort was put in to the making the run as professional as possible, and everybody can be very proud of their efforts.
The tent at the end created a lovely ambience as people could stay behind for refreshments while enjoying spectacular views of both Hore Abbey and the Rock of Cashel.
Go raibh míle maith agaibh go léir. Hope to see you all next year le cúnamh Dé.
You can contact me at principal@cashelbns.ie if you have any queries/comments re: the race. Or if you have pictures! I’d love to get some pictures for our website as we didn’t take many!

Presentation to West Waterford Athletic Club...Wed 18th Sept 2013
Donal Power presents James Veale chairman of West Waterford athletic club with the James Hughes perpetual cup for cross country. Also pictured are Kevin and Michael Power. James Hughes was their grandfather and was an Irish international cross country athlete. Donal gave a very in depth talk on his grandfather in association with the Waterford Museum Society in the Town hall theatre Dungarvan on Wednesday evening. This was attended by members of the Museum society and local athletics enthusiasts. The cup will be awarded each year to the winner of the West Waterford AC open cross country race which is celebrating its 21st year this year. The race goes ahead at St Augustine's College on October 6th at 2 pm where Waterford counties best cross country runners battle it out to make their own piece of history by being the first name inscribed on this magnificent trophy. Donal and members of the Power family will be along on race day to present the cup to the race winner.
From Donal O'Donoghue....Donal Power had a Powerpoint presentation of 77 slides shown via overhead projector, to an audience of about 60 people.
This was a very interesting talk that covered James Hughes life from his early years on the family farm, and running locally for clubs in Co Louth.
There was no blog covering races back then, so the most reliable records of the era were the many newspaper clippings he kept in his scrapbook, along with a few photos.
Circa 1911 James Hughes moved to Surrey, working for the Pearl Life Assurance company for most of the next 37 years, and joined the local Surrey Athletic club.
In early 1915 he took a break from Pearl, and joined the Royal Munster Fusiliers of the British Army, and was sent back to Ireland to his training at Fermoy and Mitchelstown. He was in the trenches of the Western Front during the 1916 Easter Rising, where the opposing Germans raised banners taunting the Irish soldiers. He fought at the Battle of the Somme, and in particular the Battle of Guillemont, 3–6 September, where his athletic career was cut short, which his right leg was seriously injured by shrapnel, and what remained had to be amputated.
After the war he continued to work for Pearl, until his retirement in 1948. He had married a lady Mary Kehoe from Waterford, but had to continue to work in Surrey while the family grew up in Ireland. He retired to Abbeyside where he passed away in 1961, but kept active throughout his life, despite his severe injury.
Several Great War campaign medals and one surviving Athletic medal, which were left to Donal Power, were on display, along with the new Trophy, which will be presented annually at the West Waterford Cross Country race. This 21th running of this race will take place on Sunday 6th October at St. Augustine’s College.
An interesting side note in this lecture is that Cross Country was an Olympic event in the early years, until an incident in 1924 Paris Olympics. The race was won by Paavo Nurmi, the "Flying Finn".
This was the era before Hydration was taken seriously. In 40C heat, many runners failed to finish. Some who did collapsed. Many hours after the race, Olympic officials and French Red Cross were still out searching the course for lost runners! As a result the Olympic Committee decided to drop Cross Country from the Games, and it has never been reinstated since.

Preview...A preview of the course with maps, photos & directions can be seen HERE
The Steeplechase......While the word 'steeplechase' today is associated with an Olympic track event or a horse race, the very first steeplechase took place here in Doneraile in the 18th century.
By most accounts, the first steeplechase race was held in 1752 in County Cork, Ireland, where a horseman named O’Callaghan engaged Edmund Blake in a match race, covering approximately 4 1/2 miles from Buttevant Church to St. Mary’s Doneraile, whose tower was known as St. Leger Steeple. Indeed, church steeples were the most prominent — and tallest — landmarks on the landscape, and the sport took its name from the chase to the steeple.
Drawing on that tradition, this 5 km race goes from the steeples of the two churches in the town of Doneraile.

Press release...Waterford County Museum presents The life and athletic career of an Irish International Cross-Country runner: James Hughes, 1908 to 1916)...By Donal Power.
Our lecture season kicks off with a local flavour this season .This power point Presentation and talk is delivered by Abbeyside’s, Donal Power and the subject matter is his grandfather; James Hughes. Never heard of him? If we mention ‘Christy’s Shop at Abbeyside. This then is the local connection. The event will deal with his life (1884 – 1961). In this presentation Donal’s talk and illustrations will deal with the formation of early athletic organisations in Ireland; The Olympic Games, 1908 and 1912; running champions and their record times 100 years ago.
It will deal with James Hughes who was Donal’s grandfather, his achievements; fame in England; life as a soldier in World War One ; International sports newspaper reports ; the tragic abrupt end to his athletic career ; his return to Ireland and his life in Abbeyside in the 1950s and 1960s.This most certainly is not a talk to be missed. Anyone who has an interest in Athletics should add the date to their diary. Donal Power is a well known Abbeyside personality, through his music and recordings and fundraising efforts.
He is presently residing in Carrigaline with his wife and family.

Event notice...Emly 13 km road race - Fri 6th Sept 2013
The 7th and final race in Ballyhoura Limerick Series is coming up next Friday, the 6th of September with the Emly 13km road race. This race is unusual in some ways in that the distance isn't usual.......13 kms is approx 8.1 miles.......and Emly is in Co.Tipperary! That said, much of the course is on the Limerick / Tipperary border and should be within easy access for a lot of people.
The race starts at 7pm and the entry fee is €10. Entries will be taken at Byrnes Tavern near the church at the eastern side of the village.
From the organisers......Emly 13k Road-Race.....The village of Emly is busily gearing itself for its first ever 13k road-race on Friday, September 6th next at 7.00pm. Following last year's well-supported and successful 10k event, the Emly organisers applied for inclusion in this year's Ballyhoura Active Summer Series of road-runs and were quickly accepted. The new course is a loop-circuit of the Northern reaches of this historic parish, skirting the Limerick/ Tipperary border, and passing through the townslands of Knockane, Duncummin and Ballyvistea in the Old Pallas/ Kilteely direction.
The 13k distance was chosen with the upcoming Charleville Half-Marathon in mind, to provide a longer work-out for those preparing for that event, the final run in the 2013 series, on Sept.22nd next. This is a flat course with a solid surface, well-marshaled and with the promise of a warm welcome and refreshments for all runners. In addition to the road-run, the organisers will also stage a fun-walk in the vicinity of the village, with some surprise entertainment for all comers!
Registration commences at 6.00pm.
Preview........A full preview of the course with maps, directions and photos can be seen HERE
