Race report from Clonmel AC......Boston Scientific Half Marathon race report
Philip Harty wins Boston Scientific Half Marathon convincingly
The 5th running of the Boston Scientific Half marathon took place last Sunday in very good conditions with the race attracting a record of 547 finishers. Right from the start a small group dictated the pace that included Raivis Zakis (West Waterford), the defending winner Colin Merritt (Cork), David Ryan (Clonmel) and the eventual winner Philip Harty (West Waterford). This group were still together at 3 miles and then on the run to the 6 mile mark Philip Harty increased the pace and soon put daylight between himself and the rest of the field with a great display of front running. Philip maintained this pace all the way along the Wood road and all the way down the Bypass he was full of running to come home a very convincing winner in 70 mins 14 secs, a brilliant performance and just two secs off the course record set by David McCarthy in 2012 of 70 mins 12 secs. He becomes the 3rd West Waterford athlete to win this event in the past 5 years.

In the Master categories the winners were: 1st over 40 Colin Merritt (Cork) in 72:21 with David Ryan (Clonmel) 2nd in 76:43. Ken Devine (St Finbarr’s) was 1st 0/45 in 79:26 with Anthony O Brien (Leamlara) 2nd in 80:36. Bernard Feery (Fethard) was 1st over 50 in 86:37 with Liam Kavanagh (West Waterford) 2nd in 90:51. Tommy Halpin (Ballynonty) was 1st over 55 in 85:15 with Larry Kennedy (Waterford A C) 2nd in 91:16.

In the Ladies race we also had a very competitive event with Emma Murphy (St Finbarr’s) running very well to win in 81 mins 25 secs when 18th overall. Madeline Loughnane (Thurles Crokes) also ran very well when 2nd woman in 84 mins 29 secs. Then we had our own Angela McCann running another great race when 3rd woman in 86:16. Teresa Aga (St Abban’s) also ran very well when 4th woman in 88:27 with Sally Forrestal 5th woman in 88:34.

The 1st woman over 35 was Sharon Woods (Mallow) in 93:30 with Suzanne Shine Clonmel 2nd in 96:56.The 1st woman over 40 was Gillian Cotter (Cork) with Siobhain McHugh (Clonmel) 2nd in 91:39. The 1st Woman over 45 was Jacinta Brazil (Waterford A C) in 95:06 with Martina Ryan (Thurles Crokes) 2nd in 96:14.The 1st woman over 50 was Mary Mulcahy (St Finbarr’s) with 2nd in 109:02 with Anne Dwyer (Limerick) 111:52.

This year’s event proved our most successful venture ever with over 540 athletes participating and it was great to see so many finishing in good spirits and many well able to put in a final surge up the finishing straight. Organising such a massive event entailed a lot of hard work and the Club is indebted to everyone who helped in any way to make this event such a success. We received brilliant assistance from both the Gardai and the Civil Defence who along with our 100 stewards ensured that the whole event was well managed. Thanks to everyone who helped especially all our Ladies who made sure that there was plenty of Post race refreshments for everyone and well down to all our catering Staff who ensured everyone were well catered for. The Club would also like to thank our main sponsors, Boston Scientific for all their help and assistance. Also thanks to our other sponsors like Glanbia, Powerade, River Rock, Stable Diet, Tipperary Spring Water, Barlo Motors and the Borough Council.

The Club is also indebted to the LIT Campus Clonmel for the use of their fabulous facilities for our Race Headquarters and to Terence Feenan who gave us such great help and assistance. We would also like to thank Clonmel Og for the Toilet and Showers facilities which were very much appreciated by everyone and to Maher Plant Hire for the use of the generator at such short notice. Our sincere thanks to Fran Mulcahy and her colleagues at South Tipperary Physio Clinic they were busy after the race and we thank them for their assistance. The Club is also indebted to Clonmel Waste who gave us tremendous help and assistance in clearing up all the Recycling rubbish after such an event.

Notice...Open X-Country, Newcastlewest, Limerick - Sun 31st Aug 2014

With the cross country season coming up in late Autumn, West Limerick AC are organising an event which should appeal to club athletes in training as well as those who have never tried X-Country before.

From the organisers...West Limerick AC...The Demesne is a parkland so the races will be run on short grass.  The Fit4Life event will be a flat course on short grass within the park.

Both Open events will include some hills, and will cross two bridges, all also within the park.

All three events are open to everyone, non-club runners are very welcome. The event is AAI permitted.

We are hoping that it will give those new to athletics a taste of what cross country running is about and may attract more athletes to competing in Co. Championships in time. For the more experienced we hope it will be a good pre-season run for anyone targeting upcoming cross country championships.

The race HQ is the  local community centre. Detailed directions on how to get there can be seen HERE

Notice...Killarney 10 mile road race - Sat 27th Sept 2014

One quick look at the race calendar shows a multitude of races with many being held for many different reasons. This one however is special. The objective of this race is to raise funds for a new athletics track in Killarney.

At the moment, the only athletics track in Kerry is the full size 400m track at the grounds of An Ríocht AC in Castleisland. It's an excellent facility and is used for all the major track & field competitions in Kerry.

It is however a 15 mile trip from Killarney. The distance in itself isn't an issue when it's for the likes of say an occasional competition but driving children there back and forth twice a week is another issue. What is required is a local facility in Killarney that is easy for people in the town and surrounding area to access.

What is proposed is the development of a 200m micro track and a floodlit all weather pitch area which will be situated on grounds leased from the St. Brendan's Trust (St. Brendan's College Killarney).

The track will have 4 lanes and have a tartan surface. While it will be measured correctly...i.e. 200m in lane 1, the track will not be a standard 200m track like say the indoor track in Athlone IT. The gradient from lane 1 to 4 will be much reduced as the track will also be used by athletes with special needs. In terms of training however it is excellent for juveniles and adults.

One special feature will be the straight section that you can see at the top. This is about 120m long and will be properly measured, marked and certified. This will facilitate all sprint events such as say the 100m, womens 100m hurdles and mens 110m hurdles. They also have plans for a long jump area as well as a facilities for pole vault, high jump, shot putt and a throwing cage.

The initiative is being supported by three local clubs as well...Spa Muckross AC, Gneeveguilla AC and Kenmare AC...

One might ask why didn't they opt for a full size 400m track but the amount of land required and the costs involved would be in a completely different league. This new facility will suit the training needs of most of the local athletes be they seniors or juveniles.

As a project, I don't see why it couldn't be replicated elsewhere around the country? It is something a lot of other athletic clubs might consider.

So, back to the race! :o)

It is on Saturday the 27th of September with a 1.30pm start.
The entry fee is €20 plus 1.50 process online.
For that there is the race, a medal, a dry fit top, chip timing and the usual prizes including spots.

The course takes in a loop to the north-west of the town as well as inside the park itself.

More on the course later.

For more info and to enter, go to the race website... http://killarney10mile.com/index.html

From the organisers.....
KILLARNEY'S first micro-athletic running track is poised to become a reality. The facility, which will feature four lanes and an astro-turf football pitch, is to be built in the grounds of St Brendan's College.

A special fundraising 10-mile road race around Killarney town is to take place on Saturday, September 27, and is expected to attract a host of elite athletes.

"People of all abilities, elite and recreational athletes, joggers and walkers are invited," said Jerh Griffin of the organising committee.

Race walking world record holder and Minish native Gillian O'Sullivan will start the race and former world mountain running champion John Linehan will present the medals.

"We are excited at the prospect of this race being an annual event to support the students and the community in this race as they jointly seek to create a mini style university approach to physical education in a sustainable way," added Jerh.

In perfect running conditions, a field of 177 runners lined up for the race start on the grounds of Kildalton Horticultural College. As the field made its way through the scenic college grounds it was Philip Harty from West Waterford AC who went to the front with a group of four runners in close pursuit. Philip really showed his strength on the long Bog Road stretch and extended his lead to enter the finish area in Piltown GAA Club over a minute ahead and take the victory in a time of 32:11.

Second place went to Noel Murphy (Waterford AC) in 33:18 just ahead of Danny Smith (Ballynonty AC) in 33:28.
