Report from Clonmel AC.......
Brian Maher wins Classic MSD Be Well 4 mile race
The MSD Be Well 4 mile Classic took place on St Stephen’s Day in good running conditions, mild, no wind and light rain to keep the body cool throughout the route. The route had to be changed due to a funeral.  There was a fantastic entry of 414 athletes and spectators were treated to some great performances.

Right from the start a group of three made their intentions known and they were Kevin Maunsell of Clonmel AC, Sergio Ciobanu of Clonliffe Harriers AC, previous winner of this race in 2009 (19:10) and 2012 (19:17) and the eventual winner Brian Maher of Kilkenny City Harriers AC who also won this race in 2004 (19:31), 2006 (18:54) and 2007 (19:04), a talented group. Kevin set the pace after Silversprings Roundabout with the other two athletes in his slip stream. They stayed this way stride for stride all the way around the route and just after Hotel Minella with approx 400m to go Sergio was leading going into the final bend with the other two athletes in hot pursuit and each athlete giving it everything as they were hopping off the ground. In the final surge for the line Brian edged clear with Kevin 2nd and Sergio 3rd, brilliant performances and a fantastic spectacle to watch especially over the final 200m as they came over the crest of the final hill and brilliant to see three talented athletes giving it everything in the pursuit of victory. For the record Brian Maher won in 19 mins 3 secs with Kevin Maunsell 2nd in 19 mins 4 secs and Sergio Ciobanu 3rd in 19 mins 7 secs, brilliant performances all round.

Then we had Patrick Lynch (KCK) winning the Junior Men’s race with a brilliant run when 4th overall in 19 mins 52 secs, a talent to keep an eye on. Brian McMahon (Clonliffe Harriers) was 4th Senior man in 20:12 while James Ledingham (West Waterford) was 5th Senior man in 20:19. The Maters Men awards were won by the following athletes:
1st 0/40 Nigel O Flaherty (Clonmel AC) 22:08, 2nd 0/40 Brian Long (Clonmel AC) 22:57, 1st 0/45 William O Dwyer (Dundrum AC) 22:17, 2nd 0/45 Dermot Hayes (Dundrum AC) 23:02, 1st 0/50 Tom Blackburn (Mooreabbey Milers AC) 22:18, 2nd 0/50 Denis Kelleher (Leevale AC) 24:09, Tommy Moloney (Thurles Crokes AC) who won the first running of this event in 1988 in 19 mins 16 secs showed he can still mix it with the best when winning the over 55 award in 25:14, 1st 0/60 Tommy Cahill (Clonmel AC) 26:18, 1st 0/65 Eamonn Crowley (Clonmel AC) 32:33, 1st 0/70 Myles McHugh (Clonmel AC) 34:09 and Zach Anderson (Clonmel) was 2nd Junior in 23:05.

Competition was also very good in the Women’s race and here we had Siobhan O Doherty (Borrioskane AC) running a brilliant race when winning in 22 mins 14 secs and Siobhan has been a great supporter of this race over the years as she won it on a number of occasions like in 2006 (23 mins), 2008(22:56), 2011 (22:55), 2013 (21:50) and last year in 22 mins 17 secs. Claire Annan (Clonmel AC) was 2nd in 23 mins 31 secs with Sally Forrestal (St Joseph’s) 3rd in 24:32, Aine Roche Clonmel AC) 4th in 25:06 and Anne Marie Boland (Clonmel AC) 5th in 25:54. The various Master Women’s Awards were won by the following athletes:1st 0/35 Dymphna Ryan (Dundrum AC) 27:03, 2nd 0/35 Tracy Culleton (Ballynonty AC) 27:20, 1st 0/40 Siobhan McHugh (Clonmel AC) 27:17, 2nd 0/40 Michelle Doherty (Cahir Meet and Train) 29:30, 1st 0/45 Anna Byrne (Clonmel AC) 27:41, 2nd 0/45 Sheila Perry (Clonmel AC) 28:08,1st 0/50 Julie Tideswell (Clonmel AC) 30:29,1st 0/55 Olive Heffernan (Cahir) 35:47 and 1st 0/60 Hazel Stapleton (Clonmel) 40:34. The Junior Women’s award was won by Lucy O Donnell (Clonmel) in 31:12 with Michelle McMeel (Clonmel Boxing Club) 2nd in 34:14.

This year’s event was a brilliant success and the Club would like to thank MSD for sponsoring the event, the Gardai and the Civil Defence for all their help and the Vocational School for the use of their fine facilities for our Race Headquarters. The Club would also like to thank our many volunteers who helped with the entries, post race refreshments, marking the course, marshalling the route and the water stations as well as organising the Start and Finish areas and the Spot prizes, your help ensured the success of the event.

At the Presentation of Prizes the Club honoured 12 athletes who competed in the first promotion of this event in 1988 and who are still enjoying their running and many of them ran the route again this year. The athletes were Tommy Moloney (Thurles Crokes AC), Bernard Feery (Fethard AC), Jim Fleming and John Foley (West Waterford),Liam Fleming, Tom Halley as well as the Clonmel AC members Tommy Cahill, Ned O Brien, Eamonn Crowley, Pierce Purcell, John Laste and Myles McHugh.

From the organisers....  Old Parish 5 mile Turkey Trot

€3510 RAISED FOR CUAN HOUSE CANCER SUPPORT CENTRE.

The 7th annual Old Parish Turkey Trot took place last Sunday morning. Conditions were ideal. The previous days rain and wind had given way to a fine mild morning. Sincere thanks go to all the crew who were out early in the morning checking the course and ensuring that it was safe for all the runners and especially to all the stewards who manned the course. A total of 150 runners and around 70 walkers took part which was testament to the hard work put in by the race committee & West Waterford Athletics Club.

The generosity of the runners, walkers and locals and the sponsorship acquired meant that €3510 was raised for CUAN HOUSE House Cancer Support Centre for West Waterford and East Cork in Youghal which is a worthy local charity that provides support to cancer suffers and their families. Everyone involved should be very pround to have raised such a huge amount for an important local charity.

Therese O'Connell spoke on behalf of Cuan House at the prize presentation and told us a little of that organisation and the great work they do. She also thanked everyone for supporting the event.
The organisers of the race sincerely thanked and acknowledged the support of all involved. The late Paddy Joe Curran who got this race underway 7 years ago would have been thrilled to see the support on the day. As a way of remembering Paddy Joe, who was our club president for years, his family donated a cup in his memory which is presented to the winner of this race every year.

The overall race winner and receipent of the Paddy Joe Curran Perpetual Cup was Philip Harty of West Waterford AC in an excellent 25.52 on what is the more difficult 5 mile races in the area. In second place was last years winner, Raivis Zakis, also of West Waterford AC in 26.55 with Frank Quinlan of Waterford AC 3rd in 27.03. Philip's mile splits show the up and down nature if the course. Mile 1 - 4.54, Mile 2 - 5.27, Mile 3 - 5.23, Mile 4 - 5.19 and Mile 5 4.47.

In the ladies victory went to the in form Kate Veale of West Waterford AC in 32.51. In 2nd was Sandra Prendergast also of West Waterford AC in 34.48. 3rd place went to Tara Rhatigan of Sportsworld, Terenure.

The race was a huge success thanks to the contribution to all involved.

Inaugural parkrun in Limerick cancelled...Sat 12th Dec 2015

CANCELLATION: Limerick parkrun
Unfortunately due to health and safety concerns with ongoing flooding on our parkrun route I have to cancel our parkrun on Saturday.
Even if the water subsides it will not drop sufficiently to clear the pathway and make it safe for runners / walkers.
I know this is disappointing for everyone but we have to consider the safety of all involved.
Please help share with your friends so we don't have people travelling unnecessarily. Stay tuned for further updates.
