The annual 10 mile road race & 5km run in Castleisland, Co.Kerry is coming up on Sunday the 17th of April 2016...
Considering its location, it is sure to
attract a lot of runners from Kerry, west Limerick and the general west
Munster region. Castleisland is only a short distance from Killarney and
Tralee and the race should be of particular interest to runners there.
This race is organised by An RÃocht Athletic Club, one of the major clubs in the county.
You can enter and find a lot more info on the race website... http://castleisland10mile.wordpress.com/
It's worth mentioning also that money raised from the road race will be used for maintenance of the outdoor track in Castleisland. It is the ONLY 400 metre track in Kerry and is used by athletes from clubs in Kerry and west Limerick. If children are going to be involved in the sport then they need access to proper local facilities like this. Perhaps for that reason alone, this race is worth supporting.
Previews....A preview of the 10 mile course can be seen HERE ....and the 5 km course HERE
This website contains information about some of the road races in the counties of Kerry, Limerick, Clare, Tipperary and Waterford in Munster, Ireland. For races in Cork, see the Running in Cork website which is the largest athletics website in Munster. That site also contains plenty of national and international news items as well.

Clare...Results of the Eamon Moloney Memorial 10k race, Ennis - Sat 26th Mar 2016
The annual Eamon Moloney Memorial 10k race in Ennis, Co.Clare was held on Saturday the 26th of March 2016. This is one of the most popular races in the county and this year it attracted about 800 people in total...about 200 in the 5k walk and 622 in the 10k race.
That however is well down on 2015 when there were about 1160 people taking part in the two events. In 2015, there were over 800 in the 10k race and that was down by over 20% this year to 622. Still though, as races go in Co.Clare, 622 is a good number of people especially for a 10k.
Just two unusual features of the race...
1) In most 10k races, women make up about roughly 45% of the field. For whatever reason, women made up 54.5% in this one.
2) The overall times were pretty slow with just 17 runners breaking 40 minutes. Compare this to say the Adare 10k in Co.Limerick last February when 58 out of 545 broke 40 mins.

Kerry...Results of the Ballybunion Half-Marathon & 10k - Sat 26th Mar 2016
The annual Ballybunion Half-Marathon & 10k was held on Saturday the 26th of March 2016 and like many other recent races, the numbers were down. In the Half-Marathon, there were 123 finishers...a drop of 24% on last year. In the 10k, there was an even bigger drop with 233 taking part...down 33%.
As numbers go for races in Kerry, it was still reasonable with 356 between the two races. It is still though a long way from the combined total of 1064 in 2012.

A total of 453 runners turned out for this years Good Friday Run in Killarney on the 25th of March 2016. As 5 mile races go in Kerry, the numbers are very good but it is down on the peak in 2014. Perhaps yet again a sign of there being too many races on the calendar?

Report from Clonmel AC....Great start to the Morrison BMW Cahir 6K Road Race Series
The first race of the Morrison BMW Cahir 6K road race series took place in ideal running conditions and it was great to see 254 athletes competing, just short of the record of 266 competitors set in 2014. Looking down through the entries, there are many athletes who are not on teams. If they want to go on a team they can contact Niall at niallfosullivan1 AT eircom DOT net and we will put them on teams for the 6k series. The closing date for teams and individuals has been extended to Sunday 27th March. Just send in the name of the team and the names of the team members and payment can be made on race night. The Race Headquarters for the 6K series is Colaiste Cheitinn, the Mall. Teams can collect their numbers here when they come to register their predicted time for the distance each night.
Tonight's race was won by Nigel O Flaherty in 21 mins 44 secs, 2nd was Joey Feery in 21 mins 55 secs, 3rd was Jimmy Boland in 22 mins 23 secs, 4th was Conor Fleming in 22 mins 43 secs, 5th was Lar Martin in 23 mins 3 secs and 6th was Gareth McGlinchey in 23 mins 8 secs. The top six women finishers were Aine Roche in 24 mins 12 secs, Se Harney in 24 mins 57 secs, Siobhan McHugh in 25 mins 8 secs, Kealey Tideswell in 25 mins 34 secs, Angela Walsh in 26 mins 9 secs and Annemarie Boland in 26 mins 11 secs. Notice...Clonmel AC 6km Inter-Firm Road Race Series...Wed 30th March & Wed 6th, 13th & 20th April 2016
Clonmel AC 6K Inter Firm Road Race Series...The Club is once again promoting the Clonmel A C 6K Inter Firm Road Race Series sponsored by Morrison BMW, Cahir. The Club would like to thank Morrison Motors and especially Gary Morrison for their very generous sponsorship.
This year the races gets underway on Wednesday 23rd March at 6.15pm SHARP with a practice run over the route while the event itself gets underway on Wednesday 30th March and 6th,13th and 20th of April. On Wednesday 20th of April the race format will be “lucky dip” based on pre selected finishing positions.
We would ask all athletes to refrain from blocking up the entrance to LIDL and keep the main road free to traffic prior to each race.
Due to the high level of interest we have to go with Chip Timing and the cost is 20 Euros for all 5 races.
Colaiste Cheitinn is the Race Headquarters for each race and numbers can be collected there from 5.30pm on the 23rd March and from 5.45pm on all the other nights.
Now is the time to be organising your team of five athletes with the best three performances (athletes who are closest to their Predictions) to count each night.
The three races on March 30th and April 6th and 13th will see athletes predict their time each night when they enter and collect their number. They must then run the course without a watch or Iphones.
If an athlete is caught wearing a watch or IPod, their team will be penalised.
This sort of competition allows every athlete to set their own pace and regardless of where they finish in the race they can all help their team to win the competition.
This is an event where you the athlete set the target, you decide every night what your finishing time is and then you have to run as close to that time to help your team. For instance you could predict 30 mins for the 6k and then run the race in 30 mins 1 second and you score one point for your team. Then you have another athlete on your team who predicts his finishing time as 21 mins and runs the race in 21 mins 31 secs, he score 31 points for the team. The three athletes that score the lowest points will count on your team, it is not based on your finishing position it is based on your time and what you predicted.
Last year’s event was a brilliant success with 77 teams competing, which saw 329 athletes compete the 1st night, 328 athletes the 2nd night and 316 athletes the 3rd night. This event caters for all levels and last year we had athletes running the 6k from 20 mins 22 secs to 49 mins.
The Lucky Dip Race will take place on Wednesday 20th April.
The Presentation of Prizes will take place in Mulcahy’s, Gladstone Street on Wednesday 22nd April at 9.30pm where refreshments and music will be provided, this was a brilliant night last year.
For further details please contact Niall O Sullivan at 086 1660888.

Clare...Results of the Pakie Ryan Memorial Run 10k & 10 mile - Sat 19th Mar 2016
The Pakie Ryan Memorial takes place every year in Newmarket on Fergus, Co.Clare and raises funds for local charities. There are multiple events taking part including walks, cycling and a 10k and 10 mile road race.
The numbers in the two road races were down this year by quite an amount. This was most likely due to the commercial Wild Atlantic Run 10k and half-marathon in Loop Head.
The numbers in the 10k dropped by 35% and the 10 mile by 45%. I first thought it might be just some walkers weren't included in the results but that's not the case. Last year, 382 runners broke the hour mark in the 10k and this year, it was 282. In the 10 mile, 122 ran sub 90 mins last year and it was 67 this year.

Kerry...Results of the Tralee Marathon & Half-Marathon - Sat 12th Mar 2016
Approximately 620 people took part in this years Tralee Marathon & Half-Marathon on Saturday the 12th of March 2016. This is how it compares to previous years..
As you can see, the numbers for both the half and full were down 27% this year despite the fact that the weather was dry and mild. This follows on from another drop in 2015 as well. When the numbers drop by say 5-10% then it's not a disaster but a drop of 27% is pretty big. If it were to continue like that, the full marathon would become unfeasible as the numbers wouldn't justify the effort & cost of having the longer course.
As for why the big drop?? It's not the cheapest of events with an entry fee of €50 for the Half-Marathon and €60 for the full but then again, there are a lot of events like that. The main reason is probably just the sheer number of races and events on the calendar at the moment.
Half-Marathon...
1 Sean O SULLIVAN 1:11:46 Senior (1) Male (1)
2 Donal O CALLAGHAN 1:13:03 Senior (2) Male (2)
3 Derek GRIFFIN 1:13:16 01:13:14 Senior (3) Male (3)
22 Sharon CAHILL 1:28:33 Ages 50-54 (1) Female (1)
24 Alison KIRWAN 1:28:57 Senior (1) Female (2)
26 Lisa GRIFFIN 1:29:14 Senior (2) Female (3)
Full Marathon....

2 Alex O SHEA 2:43:39 Ages 40-44 (1) Male (2)
3 John GRIFFIN 3:02:56 Senior (2) Male (3)

Notice...Shandrum Road Runners 5k fun run/walk, Doneraile Park - Sat 12th Mar 2016
This 5k run in Doneraile Park in North Cork is coming on Saturday the 12th of March and is organised by Shandrum Road Runners. It is in reality mostly on narrow roads and paths within Doneraile Park.
Doneraile is located just to the north-east of Mallow so access is very easy from the N20 Cork to Limerick road. If you are coming from say South Tipperary, then it's just off the N73 Mitchelstown to Mallow road.
As for Doneraile Park itself, it really is a lovely spot. It's basically an old country estate and is now a grassland park with some small forested areas. It's a superb spot for a run or walk.
The entry fee is €10 at the local community centre which is shown in the preview below. There will be prizes for the top 3 men and women.
Preview.....Directions, photos and a preview HERE.
