Entry €8 at the Soccer Club.
A word from the organizers :-
The highly anticipated and eagerly awaited Glaxosmithkline race is now almost upon us with the final touches now being put into place for Friday night which sees the race start at 8 pm at the Kilrush Crystal Centre. This is race number 8 of the ten races that make up the Ger Wyley Sports/Nike summer series and given that it’s a fast and flat course you can be sure that all runners and athletes regardless of ability and speed who are in pursuit of a PB will be in attendance as this course guarantees you a fast time. This race boasts more personal bests than any other race in the county and the evidence is in the huge crowd that attends each year with athletes travelling from all over Munster and beyond in search of the much longed for personal best times. The course records currently held for this course are held by Sandis Bralitis of West Waterford who in 2008 clocked 24.34 and given that he has accumulated 5 successive wins so far in the 2010 series it’s within his capabilities to set yet another record. Indeed he may have company on the night if he runs as Philip Harty who won the Dromana 5 in 25.30 may also set his sights on the crown as will many others so a fantastic race is in store for us all. In the ladies, it was Sinead Cummins who way back in 2004 set the ladies record when she completed the 5 mile distance in 29.20 and so far no-one has been able to match that time. At the Dromana race lately, Pauline Lambe recorded that time exactly and is more than capable of breaking that record considering that the GSK race is faster than Dromana but as she is unavailable for Friday’s race it may well be Martina O’ Dwyer of Carrick who the task will fall to or Angela McCann of Clonmel who ran one of her fastest 5 mile times ever at this course last year. Indeed, it may also very well be an unknown athlete that wins or sets the record given the popularity of the race, we will just have to wait and see. This race is always superbly organised by the hard working staff of GSK under Dermot Dwyer who always ensures that no stone is left unturned in their preparations for the race. The entry fee to the race is 8 euros and the entries will be taken in the soccer club and not the crystal centre; entries will be taken from 6.45 onwards with the race getting underway at 8 pm sharp. Changing and showers will also be available at the soccer club and it’s also where the refreshments will be provided after the race as well as the presentation of prizes. See you in Kilrush on Friday!
