From Clonmel AC... The 3rd promotion of the Cahir RUN4FUN took place in good dry conditions where athletes at times had to contend with strong winds. Still despite the inclement weather 367 athletes competed and it was a great spectacle. The last 800m downhill was very much welcome and athletes made good use of the section to record some very fast and impressive times.
The race was a great tussle between David Mansfield (Clonliffe harriers0 and the eventual winner, William Maunsell (Clonmel) as they were stride for stride for the majority of the race. it was only over the final 800m that William edged in front and kept the pace going to come home a worthy winner in 20 mins 12 secs with David a further 10 secs adrift. The tussle for 3rd place changed a lot over the final 3k with Mark Darmody (Clonmel) coming through to finish 3rd and win the over 40 award in 22 mins 6 secs. Dermot Hayes of Dundrum was 2nd over 40 in 2:47. For the record Michael J Ryan (Dundrum) was 4th in 22:29, Jimmy Boland (Clonmel) 5th in 22:32 and Colin Bradshaw (Dundrum) 6th in 22:36.
The Ladies race was also very competitive as both Aine Roche (Clonmnel0 and the eventual winner Dympna Ryan (Dundrum) were stride for stride for most of the race and it was only on the final downhill stretch that Dymphna pulled away to win in 24 mins 45 secs with Aine next in 24 mins 52 secs. Then we had Mary Louise Ryan (Moore Abbey Milers) 3rd in 25:20 with Keeley Tideswell (Clonmel) 4th in 25:38. Mary Molloy (Carrick on Suir) came trough to finish 5th and was 1st over 35 in 26:25 with Ausra Mackeviciute (Cashel Running Club) 6th in 27:01 and Tracy Culleton (Rosegreen) 2nd over 35 in 27:06.
At the Presentation of the Prizes, Frank Lynch Chairman of Clonmel AC thanked the Garda, Red Cross and the many Club stewards who ensured the whole event was a great success. Gary Morrison of Morrison BMW Cahir also thanked the many people who helped in any way to make the event such a success and in particular all his staff for all their hard work over the past couple of days. He was also delighted to have Childline as the chosen Charity this year.
Then we had the Special draw where for every 12 athletes that crossed the finishing line one of them received a voucher and this was done by having Pre selected finishing positions drawn while the race was in progress. So the prizes were evenly distributed throughout the whole race and everyone had an equal chance of winning. This is the only event in Ireland that distributes the prizes in this way and the prizes varied from 100 Euros to 30 Euros. The Lucky winners were as follows: Dermot Hayes 7th, Brendan Kinnane 16th, Edmund Kinane 32nd, Eamonn Barrett 42nd, Grainne Wade 66th, Shelly Tobin 95th, Kevin Moloney 101st, Michael Halley 113th, Gloria Boles 126th, Gillian Prendergast 133rd, Mary Rose Kinane 141st, Claire O Dwyer 178th, Triona Dalton 196th, Carol Dowling 228th, Claire Ryan 244th, Louise O Keeffe 255th, Noreen Holmes 270th, Ailish O Keeffe 283rd, Joanne Reidy 285th, Orla Cashman 296th, Caroline Meaney 318th and Betty Elliott 331st.

From the organisers......Bobby Fitzgerald Accounting Faugheen 5k
The 2015 OutfieldSports.ie Three Counties Challenge got off to a flying start on Friday evening when 163 runners lined up for the third annual Faugheen 5k. This race was once again kindly sponsored by Bobby Fitzgerald Accounting, Carrick-on-Suir. The series, which is now in its ninth year, takes in races over 5k to 10k in the three neighbouring counties of Tipperary, Waterford and Kilkenny.
Conditions were perfect as the runners set off from just outside the village on the fast, flat loop traditionally used for the 'Faugheen 50' motorcycle races. Right from the start it was David Mansfield (Garda AC) who led out the field. David maintained his strong pace to come home in a time of 15:28 and add to his recent victory in the Ballinroad 5k. In a close-run battle for the places, it was Niall Sheil (St. Killian's AC) who took the runner-up prize in a time of 15:45, just ahead of Waterford AC athlete, Noel Murphy (15:49). Carrick AC's top finisher in the men's race was Derek Walsh who clocked 17:41 in 21st place.
The ladies' race was won for the second consecutive year by Siobhan O' Doherty (Borrisokane AC) who came home in 17:15, just five seconds off the course record which she set last year. Second place went to Clonmel AC's Claire Annan in 18:28 and Maedbh Savage from Waterford AC took the third prize in 19:19. Mary Molloy was Carrick AC's first finisher in 19:40.
Congratulations to Stephanie Coffey and Thomas Kavanagh who both won a pair of New Balance running shoes in the post-race draw.
Carrick AC would like to thank all who helped to make this event such a resounding success. We are particularly grateful to Bobby Fitzgerald for the generous race sponsorship and to Alan Treacy of Outfield Sports for the continued sponsorship of the series.
Our friends in Carrick-on-Suir Red Cross were once again on hand to provide the vital medical and ambulance back-up and we are once again very grateful to Finola Walsh and the team for their assistance. A big thank you also to all of our race stewards who ensured the safety of all runners along the race route and to the Bartley family for providing parking facilities.
Thanks also to the many volunteers who helped with parking, registration and race results. The post-race refreshments and prize-giving in Flemings Bar were greatly enjoyed by all and thanks to Margaret Fleming for looking after everybody so well.
The second race in the series will be the O' Neill Pharmacy Tom Jordan Memorial road race over 5 miles in Portlaw on Friday, 8th May at the slightly later time of 7:30pm.

From Clonmel AC...Great racing in Race 3 of the Morrison BMW Cahir sponsored 6k series
Race 3 of the Morrison BMW Cahir sponsored 6k road race series took place in very good weather conditions tonight and it was brilliant to see 316 athletes compete, a record entry for race 3 of this series. Once again the Club is indebted to Morrison BMW Cahir for their very generous sponsorship.
Competition was very keen throughout all the Divisions and the majority of the final placings were only decided tonight. Indeed great credit must go to all the team Captains for encouraging all their teams to compete and it was just brilliant. In the race itself Aaron O Donnell of the Carrick Road Runners was 1st in 20 mins 31 secs with Nigel O Flaherty (Clonmel Premier Physiotherapy) 2nd in 20 mins 53 secs and Joey Feery (Lifestyle) 3rd in 20 mins 58 secs. The top three women were Claire Annan 1st in 22 mins 26 secs, 2nd Dymphna Ryan (The 5 Counties) 23 mins 27 secs and 3rd Siobhain McHugh (MSD Team 3) in 23 mins 55 secs. At this stage the Club would like to thank Noel Lonergan of Colaiste Cheitinn for all his help, the Gardai and the Civil Defence for all their help and assistance and to our many stewards for helping to make the whole event such a success, a big thanks you.
The Presentation of Prizes will take place in Mulcahy's Gladstone Street from 9pm on next Wednesday night, April 22nd, where there will be food and music. A great night is guaranteed and the above mentioned teams will collect their hard earned prizes. Clare...Results of the Kilnaboy 10 mile road race - Sun 12th Apr 2015
There was a record turn out for this years Kilnaboy 10 mile road race in Co.Clare on Sunday the 12th of April 2015. The chart below shows the story....
The 10 mile race in Kilnaboy has a long history and for the best part of 15 years, the numbers were down around the 100 mark. Around 2005 to 2010, it was part of the Munster Ten-Mile Spring Classics Series and with some advertising, it reached a peak in 2009. After the demise of the series, the numbers fell away and truth be told, the race wasn't really advertised so the numbers dropped back down towards the 100 mark.
With the introduction of the new Run Clare Series in 2015, the race and the series was heavily promoted on Facebook and you can see the new record peak above.
These are the top 5 men and women...

Looking through the results, some of the times seemed pretty slow. For example, the Great Island 10 mile in Cobh was also held on the same day. That race attracted an almost identical number of runners...528...and 74 broke 1h 10m. The Kilnaboy race had a field of 527 and had only 40 faster than 1h 10m. The course for the race in Cobh is certainly not any easier or faster than the Kilnaboy course.
I then checked out the paces in the 2015 Kilnaboy race and compared it to the previous peak in 2009. In 2009, very few runners ran slower than 1h 40m which is 10 minute/mile pace. The 2015 race by contrast had about 220 over 1h 40m...i.e. about 42% of the field.
Gender Breakdown.......In 2009, about 30% of the field were women. Things have changed in the last few years with more and more women running so it's pretty common now in most 10 mile races liek Dungarvan, Mallow and Ballycotton to have about 40% of the field made up of women.
In the 2015 Kilnaboy race, a whopping 63% of the field were women. As women are generally slower than men the times above are reflected in this. The question remains......where were all the men?
The 2009 race had 256 men while the 2015 race had 188.
Looking at the Running in Munster Facebook page, 58% of the followers are women. That is pretty typical for Facebook as more women are using it than men. Maybe it's because the Run Clare series was promoted on Facebook, it has resulted in a lot more women than men entering?

Notice...Kingdom Come 10 miler & 5km, Castleisland Co.Kerry - Sun 17th May 2015
The annual 10 mile & 5km road race in Castleisland, Co.Kerry is coming up on Sunday the 17th of May...
Considering its location, it is sure to attract a lot of runners from Kerry, west Limerick and the general west Munster region. Castleisland is only a short distance from Killarney and Tralee and the race should be of particular interest to runners there.
This race is organised by An Ríocht Athletic Club, one of the major clubs in the county.
You can enter and find a lot more info on the race website... http://castleisland10mile.wordpress.com/
It's worth mentioning also that money raised from the road race will be used for maintenance of the outdoor track in Castleisland. It is the ONLY 400 metre track in Kerry and is used by athletes from clubs in Kerry and west Limerick. If children are going to be involved in the sport then they need access to proper local facilities like this. Perhaps for that reason alone, this race is worth supporting.
Previews....A preview of the 10 mile course can be seen HERE ....and the 5 km course HERE
From An Ríocht AC...An Riocht Lee Strand 10 mile and 5k...The fourth annual An Riocht Lee Strand 10 mile and 5k Road Race will this year be held on May 17th starting at 11am. Last year’s event was a huge success when seven hundred took part, creating an unrivalled atmosphere from start to finish with a great buzz as all participants finished on the track. Some of the people taking part will be experienced runners competing against each other and the clock, but the main body of participants will be those who will have their own personal goals, that may be improving on previous times for the event or conquering the distance for the first time. Either way, everybody is sure to have a great experience and will receive plenty of support from everyone.
We are delighted to announce Lee Strand as the official Kingdom Come 10 miler and 5k sponsors again this year!! Big thanks to them for their continuous support of the event.

Report from Clonmel AC... Brilliant night’s racing again
The 2nd race of the Morrison BMW Cahir sponsored 6k road race series took place tonight in ideal summer like conditions, conditions that saw 328 athletes compete over this very familiar route. This was a brilliant entry and well done to all the Team Captains for getting so many athletes out to compete. Indeed it is a feature of this year’s series that the numbers have remained very constant. Such being the situation and the fantastic response we have got, that we have decided that for race 3 only, we will reward a team in each Division that records the lowest number of points and who finishes outside the top three of that Division, an Award, so all the teams in each Division have a opportunity to win such an Award. Everyone will have ran this route at least two times so everyone will have a fair idea of what time they can predict for the 3rd race.
Back to the race and here we had a very good race with both Michael J Ryan and Nigel O Flaherty (Clonmel Premier Physiotherapy) finishing in same time of 21 misn 4 secs, with Michael getting the verdict on the line. Joey Feery (Lifestyle Sports) was 3rd in 21 mins 17 secs. The top three women were Claire Annan 23 mins 15 secs, Dymphna Ryan (The 5 Counties) 2nd in 23 mins 38 secs and Siobhain McHugh (MSD) 3rd in 24 mins 9 secs. In the team competitions it is very competitive in all seven Divisions, which is brilliant and Team Captains are reminded to get all their athletes out competing on the 3rd night as it is all to run for, nothing won yet. The Club would like to thank Noel Lonergan for all his help at the Vocational School, to the Garda and the Civil Defence as well as our many stewards for all their help in ensuring a very successful event.
The 4th race on Wednesday 22nd April will be a Lucky Dip format. In this race athletes can wear the watches and prizes will be awarded to athletes who finish in pre selected finishing positions. Then later that night the Presentation of Prizes will take place in Mulcahy’s Gladstone Street Clonmel from 9.30pm onwards with food served at 9pm.

Races in Kerry...How many is too many??
Just a few years ago...maybe around 2008/9...there was a modest number of races in Kerry. Once one race was over, it might be another fortnight or so before the next one would come around.
Consider the following. Over the Easter weekend, this was the choice of events for runners in Kerry without traveling too far.
Kerry...Fri 3rd (6:30pm)...Good Friday Run...€25...
Kerry...Sat 4th (9:30am)...Tralee 5k parkrun...€free...Tralee Town Park...
Kerry...Sat 4th (2pm)...Ballybunion Half-Marathon & 10k...€10k €26.75 / Half €53.50...
Kerry...Sat 4th (1pm)...Kenmare Bridge 1 mile, 5k & 10k...5k €15 / 10k €20...info...
Kerry...Sun 5th (9:30am)...Banna 4 mile...€?...
Cork...Mon 6th (2pm)...Boherbue to Kiskeam 4 mile road race...€15...info...NW Cork...
Whatever about the physical ability of running several races in a few days, it is also very expensive.
Just looking at the results over the weekend, the numbers for Ballybunion, the Good Friday Run and Boherbue-Kiskeam were all down this year. It would seem as if the available pool of runners is being spread across an increasing number of events.
What conclusions can be drawn from this?
1) It's going to become more difficult for any event to grow and even staying at a steady number might be considered a success.
2) Any event with low numbers and high costs will probably be the first to go.
Thoughts?
Consider the following. Over the Easter weekend, this was the choice of events for runners in Kerry without traveling too far.

Thoughts?

Kerry...Results of the Ballybunion Half-Marathon, 10k & 5k - Sat 4th Apr 2015
The Ballybunion Half-Marathon was held on Saturday the 4th of April and attracted a field of 162 runners. There was a also the usual 10k which got the bulk of the runners with 348 taking part. There was also a new 5k which just 80 entrants.
This is a chart showing the numbers for the last few years.
As you can see, the current numbers are well down on the peak back in 2012. Even allowing for the fact that some of those who might have done the 10k opted instead for the 5k, the combined total is still down on last year. Not exactly sure why the constant drop year after year? Perhaps it's just a sign of there being so many events on the calendar?
