The annual Splashworld 10k road race in Co.Waterford was held on Friday the 13th of May and attracted a field of 186 runners. That's a drop of about 21% on last year.
As you can see, the numbers were very steady for the previous three years but were well down this year. The race had been rescheduled from an earlier date so that might have had an impact. It was a lovely summer evening so that wasn't a factor. The one big change this year is that there in a new 5k parkrun in Tramore every Saturday morning. That event which is free contrasts to the €15 which it cost to enter the 10k. On Saturday the 14th, 83 people took part in the parkrun so some may well have opted for the free event.

I'd say the fact it was rescheduled was a major factor and that alone would explain the fall in numbers. It was moved from a Sunday morning to a Friday evening. I know one person who signed up for the original but could not attend the rescheduled race as he works on Friday evenings.
ReplyDeleteIt was a really enjoyable event and credit to the organisers and stewards who had a tricky job on what was a busy sunny Friday evening in Tramore.
