Looking ahead to the Dungarvan 10 mile road race...Sun 1st Feb 2015
The big race in Munster this weekend of course is the Dungarvan 10 mile road race. This sold out months ago and the entry list can be seen HERE
First off, the weather forecast looks pretty good.
There is a ridge of high pressure moving across the country so the winds that are here on Saturday will drop. It's likely to be sunny and dry. The wind should be a breeze from the north-west so it's going to feel very cold. Wind into your face when you're heading west in the early stages and near the finish. Maybe about 4-5 deg C and feeling cooler at the start line with a bit of wind chill.
It's probably the type of conditions where you could wear a singlet on its own but you'll be frozen at the start line. You'd get away with a dry fit top. Don't even think about wearing a jacket as you'll bake at the end of the race.
As for the course, it is largely the same as before except for the part near the town. The preview of the old route is here... http://munsterraceroutes.blogspot.ie/2013/03/waterford009.html
The organisers have put up a copy of the new route but it's not very clear. Here is the route near the town....
1) Because of road works, the start has moved closer about 400m to the east. This cuts out a small hill but that's a small issue coming so early in the race.
2) There is a sharp left bend at 400m. Runners on a road behave like a fluid in a pipe....any bends and it slows. Watch for congestion here.
3) See the red arrows. You head out the Cork road like before. Turn right and pass the 2 mile mark. This time, instead of running straight, you turn right and past the finish line. Then you head west and you're back on the usual route.
4) See blue arrows. In previous years, you stayed inside the hard shoulder of the main road all the way to the roundabout. This year, you turn off left instead as you approach the town. A slight diversion to make up the 10 miles.
Overall......Should be good conditions for a 10 mile race. The changes to the course shouldn't make much difference. Expect a fast time.

From Clonmel AC......The 2nd race of the Clonmel AC 4K series sponsored by the Barlo Motor Group took place in ideal running conditions, dry and no breeze, a major improvement on last week's weather conditions where we had to cancel the event on Health and Safety grounds due to the very bad stormy weather. It was great to see 140 athletes compete and we had some great finishes. The race format was Lucky Dip and the athletes who finished in the Pre Selected finishing positions were as follows: Aidan Cremins 3rd in 14:42, Daniel Kennedy 19th in 16:42, Ivan Barlow 25th in 17:01, Brian Slattery 36th in 17:45, Noel Prendergast 46th in 18:17, John Roche 52nd in 18:36, Tony Duggan 71st in 19:44, Rebecca Cassin 85th in 21:03, Honor Goonan 99th in 22:25, Nicola Guiry 106th in 23:18, Noel Curran 122nd in 24:41, Louise Daly 133rd in 25:31 and Susan Laste 137th in 26:33.
Last night's results were based on the Chipped times as we had a wave start with athletes going off at different intervals. For instance John Shanahan was the first athlete across the finishing line in 14 mins 19 secs but Michael Ryan who started 18 seconds behind him ran 14 mins 15 secs for the distance.
The Club would like to thank the Barlo Motor group for sponsoring this year's series and the winner of the car for this week is Noel Curran. The Club would also like to thank the Brothers of Charity for the use of their carpark and the Civil Defence for looking after the First Aid. The Club would also like to thank the many stewards who ensured that the whole event was successfully managed.
The race that was cancelled last week has been re scheduled for Wednesday 25th February. On Wednesday 18th February we will have our 4K charity Run and this year the worthy Charity will be the Irish Pilgrimage Trust and this is a Charitable organisation who take approx 500 children with special needs to Lourdes for a week at Easter, a very worthy cause and well worth supporting on Wednesday 18th February as all monies donated on that night will go to this worthy cause.

From Clonmel AC........The Club's 4K Road Race series sponsored by the Barlo Motor Group got underway last Wednesday night. Despite a torrential downpour about 40 minutes before the start, there was a very good entry of 140 athletes and they witnessed a brilliant performance by William Maunsell. While the rain eased off with 20 to go, the athletes had to contend with a swirling wind also. Right from the start, William made his intentions known opening up a lead on the chasing pack inside the first 400m. He kept this tempo going and was full of running as he came under the gantry in 6 mins 16 secs for the 1st lap. He maintained that very strong pace all the way to the finish line to record a very impressive 12 mins 27 secs for the 2 lap course...fantastic running and what a performance. William also held the old record which he set on the 28th November 2012 and it has stood since at 12 mins 50 secs. Then we had Michael Ryan finishing 2nd in 14:20 with John Shanahan 3rd in 14:32.
The ladies race was also very competitive as very little separating Siobhan McHugh and Clare Annan at the end of the first lap, they were still stride for stride as they came into view along the finishing straight and they were both credited with the same time, a brilliant 16 mins 27 secs great running with Yvonne O Connor 3rd in 17:41.
The Race format last night was Lucky Dip and one of the Lucky winners would win the opportunity to drive a new Barlo Motor Group car for a week and that Lucky winner was Aine Hayes. Aine ran very well when finishing 123rd in 25 mins 24 secs. The other Prize winners were Lar Martin 7th 15:51, Michael Fitzgibbon 17th 16:59, Dan Egan 21st 17:16, Jimmy Lonergan 30th in 17:51, Billy O Grady 43rd 18:36, Graham Swanton 57th 19:36, Barry Kent 73rd 20:14, Noel Curran 88th 22:06, Johnny Casey 90th 22:10, Nicola O Gorman 97th 22:48, Colette Walsh 130th 26:42 and Shauna Condon Ryan 138th 29:51.
The race start was a staggered start so the results are done on net times, we will use this system for all the races.
The Race format next week will also be Lucky Dip. The Club would again like to thank the Barlo Motor Group for their very generous sponsorship, thanks also to the brothers of Charity for the use of their carpark, to the Civil Defence for the First Aid and to our many stewards who ensured that the whole event was a great success. We still need more stewards to come forward and help out with the remaining five races, so text Niall at 086 1660888.
