Report from Clonmel AC...The Poulmucka road races took place last Friday night with athletes having to contend with damp conditions. Still this didn’t deter over 280 athletes competing and there were some great performances throughout the races. The 8K attracted a good quality entry of 193 athletes with 88 athletes competing over the 5k course. The 8K race was started by Andy Moloney and soon after the start the pace was dictated by Jimmy Boland of Clonmel Ac and the eventual winner William Stevens of Coolquill AC. These two athlete drew well clear of the chasing pack just before the 4k mark. It was over the final 2k that William increased the pace and soon opened a lead on Jimmy which he held all the way to the line to win in 27 mins 7 secs with Jimmy finishing 2nd in 27 mins 28 secs. These were two great performances from two improving athletes. Then we had Michael J Ryan (Dundrum AC) emerging for the chasing pack over the final km to finish 3rd in 28 mins 5 secs with Paddy Cummins (Moycarkey Coolcroo AC) 4th in 28 mins 23 secs and Colin Bradshaw (Dundrum AC) 5th in 28 mins 31 secs. The Master men’s awards were won as follow: 1st over 40 Keith O Brien (Clonmel AC) 29:06, 2nd over 40 Ruaidhri Devitt (Dundrum AC) 29:21, 1st over 45 Dermot Hayes (Dundrum AC) 28:46, 2nd over 45 Conor Fleming (Clonmel AC) 29:58, 1st over 50 Bernard Feery (Fethard AC) 29:32, 2nd over 50 Valerin Thzcoin (Cahir) 30:02, 1st over 55 Billy Prout (Clonmel AC) 36:36, 2nd over 55 John Conneally (Clerihan) 38:52, 1st over 60 Tommy Cahill (Clonmel) 34:50, 2nd over 60 Jimmy Lonergan (Clonmel AC) 35:48.
The Ladies race was also very competitive. Here Aine Roche, fresh back for her altitude training, took up the pace early on in the race and soon moved well clear of the chasing pack. She kept that pace going to win this event for the first time when finishing in 31 mins 35 secs, great running over a demanding course. Then we had a right tussle for 2nd spot for most of the race, then over the closing stages, Annmarie Boland (Clonmel AC) went clear of Linda Grogan (Dundrum AC) to finish 2nd in 32 mins 22 secs with Linda further 3 secs adrift, great running, a double 2nd for the Boland household. Then we had Phil Ryan (Ballynonty AC) finishing 4th in 32 mins 59 secs with Suzanne Shine (Clonmel AC) 5th in 33 mins 48 secs. The Women’s Master awards were as follows: 1st over 35 Elaine Walley (Clonmel Tri Club) 34:44, 2nd over 35 Dympna Ryan (Dundrum AC) 35:09, 1st over 40 Siobhan McHugh (Clonmel AC) 33:54, 2nd over 40 Yvonne O Connor (Clonmel AC) 33:59, 1st over 45 Sheila Perry (Clonmel AC) 35:53, 2nd over 45 Aine Moore (Ballymac Road Runners) 40:23, 1st over 50 Anna Byrne (Clonmel AC) 36:05, 2nd over 50 Mary Trehy (Fethard) 41:24 and 1st over 55 Mari Murphy Condon (Clonmel AC) 48:52.
