Record numbers for the Waterford Viking Marathon event - 22nd June 2025

The annual Waterford Viking Marathon was held this year on Sunday 22nd of June 2025 with over 3300 participants across the three events on offer... the full, half and quarter marathon.

Results HERE

The chart above shows the numbers since the event started in 2012.

The inaugural year of 2012 saw a record number of over 800 finishers for the full marathon as many runners were inspired to do the first marathon in the city. With that box ticked, the numbers dropped back to to about 400-500 per year.

In 2018, the full marathon was cancelled due to the heat.

Post pandemic, the numbers have been recovering and the 531 finishers in 2025 was the second highest ever.

The Half-Marathon numbers have varied over the years but 2024 and 2025 were both new records.

Cork, Limerick and Waterford all have a shorter event which seems to be increasingly popular. Cork has a 10k, Limerick has a 6-mile and Waterford has a Quarter-Marathon.

The Quarter-Marathon this year had over 1400 finishers and has just overtaken the half to be the most popular event.

The chart above shows the total number of finishers from all events added together. This shows the extraordinary growth in the last few years.

Guest Post: Entries Flooding in for the 40th Coillte 10k Road Race in Dundrum, Tipperary

From Dundrum AC... Niamh O'Mahony from the An Riocht club in Kerry promoting this years Coillte 10k road race to be run for the 40th consecutive year in Dundrum on Wednesday 2nd July at 8pm.The US based scholarship athlete was a clear winner of the women's section at last years race in a excellent time of 34 minutes 46 seconds.

Forty years, four decades, four national records Wednesday the 2nd of July at 8pm the Coillte 10k Road Race in Dundrum Co Tipperary will be run for the 40th consecutive year by the local Dundrum Club.

With two weeks to go to race date entries are flooding in so intended runners should get their entry in now to be sure of receiving the specially Embroidered Souvenir Hand Towel to be collected from 6pm on the evening of the race along with your race number at race HQ Dundrum Community Hall E34 EY28.

This year the club has once again linked up with Niall O’Sullivan’s Premier Timing Systems for entries and result data to manage the ever-increasing numbers of runners every year.

Entries are online via the link https://eventmaster.ie/event/67A1sEpT5G. The club would appreciate it if participants could enter at least a week or two before the race date. Early entry gives the organizers an idea of the number of embroidered dated towels required, plus the food requirements for the big spread afterwards. Also, it is a big help to Niall for him to get to work on his system early.

This year’s official race starter is Dominic Moore. The Rosmult man who competed with his native Upperchurch, Moyne and Dundrum in his day has maintained his connection with the race over the years through his donation of the Tim Crowe trophy for the first Tipperary athlete over the finish line. Dominic finished third in the very first 10k back in 1986 so forty years later it is appropriate that Dominic should blow the whistle to set the athletes on their way.

For an excellent guided tour of the course road by road Google the Running in Munster Ireland Website... https://munsterrunning.blogspot.com/2025/06/notice-coillte-10k-road-race-dundrum.html

Michael Hassett St Catherines has the best number of men’s victories with six wins. While in the women’s race Siobhan O’Doherty Borrisokane is in a class of her own with twelve wins.

The following are all the winners since the event first ran in 1986.

Records galore at the Moycarkey Coolcroo 5k in Tipp - Fri 13th June 2025

New course record for David McCarthy

The annual Moycarkey Coolcroo 5k road race in Tipperary was held this year on Friday 13th of June 2025 and all sort of records were broken.

A total of 265 runners took part in this years race, up a whopping 43% on last year. Not only is that a pretty good turnout for a 5k race in rural Tipperary but it was also a record number.

The 5k race is noted for being a fast course and this is reflected in the results with 82 runners finishing under 20 minutes.

The first man home was David McCarthy of West Waterford in a new course record time of  14m 29s!

The first woman was Dymphna Ryan of Dundrum AC who finished in a time of 16m 59s, another course record.

Top 3 men & women...

Notice: Dromcollogher Carnival 4 mile road race, Co.Limerick - Mon 23rd June 2025

The annual Dromcollogher Carnival 4 mile road race is coming up this year on Monday the 23rd of June 2025 at 8pm.

You can pre-enter online HERE

You can also enter on the night (€10 for runners and €5 for walkers).

As a race, it may not be as high profile as say those located closer to say Limerick or Cork City but it is an event with a lot of character and a long history. The race was originally started back in the time of the original running boom in the late 70's and early 80's by Christy Brosnan and Joe Quaid of North Cork AC. The original idea was for it to be part of the Dromcollogher Carnival which has been going since the 1940's and for the race to take place on Monday evening, a tradition that survives to this day.

In it's heyday, the race used to attract some of the top runners from all over Munster even though the prizes were always modest in comparison to other races at the time. On one occasion, Liam O'Brien from Cork won the race the day after winning the National 3000m steeplechase title! The triangle shaped course started and finished in the main square of the town much to the delight of the crowds. This did however mean that the race was in fact 'slightly' longer than the advertised 4 miles ;o)

One of the other unusual features of the race at the time was that the winner received a small porcelain figurine. One of the biggest employers at that time in the town was Irish Dresden, a German company which made high quality collectable porcelain items in the town which employed over 60 people, a huge number in what was and still is a rural area.

West Limerick AC are helping out with the organisation of the race and they are putting up a cup in memory of Christy Brosnan who unfortunately has now passed away. This replaces the old cup which was named after Marky O'Shea who used to run in the local races of the late 70's and early 80's barefoot, a long time before minimalist running and Vibram Five Fingers became all the rage ;o)

Getting there.....Dromcollogher is located to the west of Charleville near the Limerick - Cork border. If you are coming from say Limerick city then the easiest way is probably to head south towards Cork and turn off at Charleville and follow the directions for Newtownshandrum, Milford and Dromcollogher. If you are travelling north from Cork then turn off at Buttevant and go via Liscarroll.

As you enter the town from the east then you should see that the road forks into two where the central square is. Take the right here, drive a few hundred metres on what is a very straight road and you will pass the start line just opposite a service station. The GAA hall where the entries will be taken is just beyond this on the left.

Notice: Coillte 10k road race, Dundrum, Tipperary - Wed 2nd July 2025

This popular 10k race in coming up in the village of Dundrum, Co.Tipperary on Wednesday the 2nd of July 2025. In terms of fast 10k courses, this must surely be one of the fastest in Munster if not the country.

ENTRIES - You can enter online HERE

From Dundrum AC... "40th Coillte 10k Road Race Dundrum Wednesday 2nd July. Forty years, four decades, four national records !!

Wednesday the 2nd of July at 8pm the Coillte 10k Road Race in Dundrum Co Tipperary will be run for the 40th consecutive year by the local Dundrum Club.

The race which started as part of a local weekend festival which was so popular back in the eighties is still going strong 40 years later.

The club is delighted to have Coillte once again as our main sponsor. Dundrum is surrounded by trees and forest trails for running and walking developed by Coillte over the years. It is appropriate that Coillte are involved with us in the healthy sport of running.

The Company’s managed forest trails around Dundrum and indeed around the Country are a haven for people to get out for a bit of fresh air and exercise. The semi-state company has been involved in this race every year since it was set up in 1988, which is appreciated by the Dundrum club.

The race which also incorporates a 5K for juniors (age between 13 years old on day of race and 19 years or under on 31/12/2025) is based around the Dundrum Community Hall Centre Complex E34 EY28 in the village where the club has its athletics facilities.

The race has prizes in every category from Senior to over 70 years for both men and women. With the Master categories at the standard five-year intervals from Over 40 years plus.

There will be the usual specially Embroidered Souvenir Hand Towel for all online entrants to be collected with race number from 6pm on the evening of the race. For Tipperary athletes there is the added incentive of Tim Crowe Memorial trophy (kindly donated by Dominic Moore) for the first Tipperary athlete to finish the 10k.

The present holder is Clonmel’s Irish International athlete William Maunsell who won the overall race for the first time last year in a cracking time of 30 minutes and14 seconds for the 10,000 meters (6.2 mile) distance.

This year the club has once again linked up with Niall O’Sullivan’s Premier Timing Systems for entries and result data to manage the ever-increasing numbers of runners every year.

Entries online via the link: https://eventmaster.ie/event/67AlsEpT5G

The club would appreciate it if participants could enter at least a week or two before the race date.

Early entry gives the organizers an idea of the number of embroidered dated towels required, plus the food requirements for the big spread afterwards. Also, it is a big help to Niall for him to get to work on his system early.

The layout of the two-lap course makes it ideal for spectators to see the race and encourage the athletes as the race progresses. One section of the course in the village allows viewing of the race at four different stages by moving about one hundred meters.

***

Dundrum is a small village just 9 miles / 15kms or so west of Cashel in the south of Tipperary...

Organised by Dundrum Athletic Club, this race is noted for being a flat fast course. As well of there being no hills, the course consists of multiple long straight sections rather than the more usual twists and turns. I've previewed many courses on this site but this one is really fast.

The map below shows where everything is. For spectators...note the points A, B and C. If you move between these points which are just over 100m apart you can see the athletes at approx. 0.25miles , 2.4miles, 3.2miles and again at 5.4miles.

Course Preview......The 10k course is essentially two laps of a 5k loop. A full preview of the course with maps, description, photos, etc can be seen HERE

Many races have different traditions. Some give out t-shirts, some mugs. In the case of the Coillte 10k, they give out a quality embroidered hand towel which is collected with Race Number on the night.

The Tim Crowe Trophy is presented on the night to the first Tipperary Athlete in honour of his 24 national titles won in the early 1900s, who was from the village of Dundrum.

There is also a large spread of refreshments after race.
