Full marathon in Waterford cancelled due to hot weather...

The organisers of the Viking Waterford Marathon have decided to cancel the full 26.2 mile marathon on Saturday due to the current spell of hot weather. The forecast is for temperatures of about 24 degrees at noon with 20 deg expected at the start.

Those who had entered the full are being given an option of doing the 13.1 mile half-marathon instead, deferring it to next year or getting a refund.

Roughly 400 runners complete the Viking Marathon every year.

Subject: important announcement
On the advice of our Medical Director, Waterford University Hospital, An Garda Siochana, Met Eireann and our Health and Safety Team, the organisers of the Waterford Viking Marathon have made the decision to downgrade the Event to a Half and Quarter Marathon only.
Forecasts earlier in the week had indicated a reduction in temperatures, but tomorrow’s forecast is now consistent with previous days, therefore this decision was made for the safety and health of all our runners, staff and stewards.
We encourage all our registered Full marathon runners to take part in the Half or Quarter event tomorrow morning at 9am. Any that do will be offered a discount on next year’s entry fee.
Any Full marathon runners that do not participate tomorrow have the option of being given a refund or a deferred entry for next year (deadline for notifying WVM team is July 10th) or completing the event virtually by July 10th.
The silver lining for the event is that all participants will have even more water, entertainment and fun en route. We look forward to a seeing all our runners line up for a wonderful event tomorrow on the Mall at 9am.
