The 17th Annual Touraneena 5km road race is coming up on Friday, the 1st of June at 8pm. This is the 5th race of 10 in the Ger Wyley Sports Summer Series.
Touraneena is just east of the R672 Dungarvan to Clonmel road and is roughly half-way between the two towns. From the south-west, it is just off the R671 Clashmore to Clonmel road. From Youghal, take the N25 to Kinsalebeg, and turn left (north) onto the R671 to Clonmel, and take a right turn about a mile past the old village of Millstreet.
Entries will be taken at the nearby community centre and the race fee is 8 euros. This race is organised by the Touraneena Racquetball club. Many walkers also take part in this event and a special presentation of the Ann Power memorial Shield will be awarded to the walker who predicts nearest to their time how long it will take them to walk the course.
The start of the race is up a narrow country road. You run back towards the village and then right. The roads are mostly quiet and the only one you need to watch is the section between 1.2 and 2.1 miles. For the most part, the gradients are very modest with the exception of a steep downhill and uphill around the 3 mile mark.
From the organisers........This is a good, challenging course and a really flat out effort is needed but well worth the visit for the strawberries and ice cream afterwards. Showers and changing facilities plus refreshments and the prize-giving will take place also at the community centre after the race. The race is open to all runners over the age of 16 years.
Course records: Vanessa Molloy 17.41 (1997), David McCarthy West Waterford AC 14.26 (2008)
