Notice...The Champion Kiely 5k road race, Ballyneale, Tipperary - Fri 26th June 2015

This 5 km road race is coming up in Ballyneale, South Tipperary on Friday, the 27th of June 2014 at 7:30pm.

Location...Ballyneale is about 3 miles / 5 kms to the north-west of Carrick-on-Suir.
If you are coming from Clonmel then take the N24 for Carrick-on-Suir. Look for the turn off left about 4 kms east of Kilsheelan.
From Carrick-on-Suir, take the R696 and look for the turn off left.

The village is well sign posted from the N24, N76 and R696 roads. Unusually however, the signs on the N76 and R696 refer to it as 'Ballyneill' while the sign posts on the N24 say 'Ballyneale'. Either way, it's one and the same village.

Ballyneale itself is a very small village consisting of a church, pub, school and several houses.

From the organisers.....Race registration will be from 6pm at the school. Parking is available at the community sports field, 800 metres from the school. The race starts 200 metres from the school and includes one full circuit of the village and finishing at the community sports field. Tea and refreshments will be served at the sportsfield.

Kerry...Results of the Lakes of Killarney Marathon - Sat 16th May 2015

The annual Lakes of Killarney Marathon & Half-Marathon was held on Saturday the 16th of May in Killarney National Park. The numbers were down a bit this year in the half dropping from 199 down to 149...a 25% drop. The numbers for the full remained much the same...88 this year compared to 84 last year. The chart below shows the numbers...

It's a bit suprising that it has never really grown in numbers? It's a lovely spot for a half and a full and the time I did it as a pacer for the full, it seemed well organised. The only thing is that  it's a low key event so maybe the organisers want to keep it like that?

The drop in number in the half this year may well be due to the Castleisland 10 mile being on the same weekend.

Reminder...Casteisland 10 mile & 5k in Kerry - Sun 17th May 2015

Just a reminder that you can still enter the Castleisland 10 mile and 5k race on the morning of the race.

This race is organised by An Ríocht Athletic Club, one of the major clubs in Kerry.

You can enter and find a lot more info on the race website... http://castleisland10mile.wordpress.com/

It's worth mentioning also that money raised from the road race will be used for maintenance of the outdoor track in Castleisland. It is the ONLY 400 metre track in Kerry and is used by athletes from clubs in Kerry and west Limerick. If children are going to be involved in the sport then they need access to proper local facilities like this. Perhaps for that reason alone, this race is worth supporting.

Limerick... Possible Research Paticipation Injury advice

To whom it may concern,

My name is Sean Mc Auliffe, I am currently a PhD researcher at the University of Limerick. For the past 2 years we have been engaged in research involving athletes with achilles tendon pain; mainly we have been looking at: The impact achilles tendon pain has on their running and the effects of an individualised rehabilitation program on pain in achilles tendon sufferers.

The first part has involved a brief 15 min phone interview detailing the impact achilles tendon pain has on running performance, daily activities etc. The second part is providing achilles tendon pain sufferers with a comprehensive and tailored rehab program based on their symptoms and deficits by assessing strength, biomechanics, posture etc as well as providing info an appropriate training load and activity.

We are non profit researchers, our only aim is to help people with achilles tendon pain by understanding it more and providing education and rehabilitation free of charge. We have been actively involved with running clubs around the Limerick area for the past 2 years and we are hoping to expand this further if possible. Given the popularity of your website we are wondering if there would be a possibility of providing information about our studies if readers were interested.

Kind regards

Seán Mc Auliffe (BSc),

PhD Candidate, Department of Clinical Therapies, Health Science Building, University Of Limerick.

Waterford...Results of the Portlaw 5 mile road race - Fri 8th May 2015

The annual Tom Jordan Memorial 5 mile road race was held in Portlaw, Co.Waterford on Friday the 8th of May 2015. A total of 192 runners took part, a jump of 14% on the number for 2014.

This was also the 2nd race of 5 in the Three Counties Challenge organised by Carrick on Suir AC.

From Carrick-on-Suir...
O' Neill Pharmacy Tom Jordan Memorial 5-miles

The second race of the 2015 OutfieldSports.ie Three Counties Challenge saw 195 runners line up for the O' Neill Pharmacy Tom Jordan Memorial race in Portlaw on Friday evening last. This was the seventh running of this very popular event and the third year in which it formed part of the five-race series organised by Carrick-on-Suir AC. The heavy rain during the day cleared just in time for the race and runners enjoyed good conditions for the five mile challenge.

The course which was used for the first time last year received very favourable reviews and again produced some fast times. Victory in the men's race went to Clonmel AC's Kevin Maunsell who led for practically the entire route and finished with a time of 24:55. David Mansfield from Clonliffe Harriers had taken the first race of this year's series in Faugheen and again ran a fine race to finish in second place in 25:15. Carrick AC runner, Brian Murphy, was close behind in third place, clocking 25:24.

The ladies' race was won in fine style by Clonmel AC's Claire Annan who broke the 30-minute barrier with a superb time of 29:54. Sylvia Malone from Waterford AC took the runner-up prize with Anna-Leigh Hore from Kilmore AC taking third place.

Carrick AC would like to thank all who helped make this such a successful event. Thanks to O' Neill Pharmacy, Portlaw, for once again kindly sponsoring the race and to Alan Treacy, Outfield Sports, Carrick-on-Suir for the continued sponsorship of the overall series. The Portlaw branch of the Red Cross once again excelled with their race organisation. It has been through the dedication and hard work of Brian Nugent and his Red Cross colleagues that the race has become so firmly established on the road-race calendar.

A big thank-you also to all of the race stewards who ensured the safety of the runners and to all who helped with race registration, timing, results and post-race refreshments at the Forge Bar.

The third race of the series will be the Deadman's 5-miles in Carrick-on-Suir on Friday, 5th June at 7:30pm.

Note from the organisers......The seventh annual O' Neill Pharmacy Tom Jordan Memorial 5-mile road race will be held in Portlaw on this Friday evening, May 8th, at 7:30pm. This very popular event is the second race in this year's OutfieldSports.ie Three Counties Challenge which got underway in Faugheen two weeks ago. The entry fee for the race is €10 and registration will be from 6pm in the old fire station across the road from the Portlaw Heritage Centre. There will be prizes in all the usual age categories as well as team prizes for both men and ladies. There will also be a draw for all non-prizewinning participants and two lucky runners will take home a pair of New Balance running shoes valued at €130.

Prize-giving and post-race refreshments will be at the Forge Bar where all are assured of a warm welcome from Brian Nugent and the Portlaw Red Cross team. If it's from the South / Waterford City side then take the left...

...and then you'll come to a T-junction where you turn right.....cross the bridge......and then take the first left.....

This will take you to the roundabout which is located at the western side of the town.

If you are coming from West Waterford then take the N25 east as far as Carroll's Cross Road, Ballyshonock........turn left at the old red/orange thatched cottage, which is signposted "L4022 Portlaw". The large QK Cold Storage plant is on the opposite side of the road. This road takes a shorter route to Portlaw.

There are a few places that you need to take note of...

1) Entries will be taken at the Heritage / Resource Centre which is located next to the roundabout.
