The West Waterford Greenway Half-Marathon is coming up this year on Saturday the 29th of August 2026 at 9am. This scenic half has a limit of 750 entries so I would advise anyone that is interested to enter asap.

Entry fee includes bus travel to start point in Kilmacthomas, and a unique Greenway Tshirt!  ( It does not include bus back to Kilmacthomas)

As all our supporters know we try to raise awareness for important causes and charities with our events and this year the chosen charity we are supporting is the West Waterford Athletic Club Track Fund.

We hope that you will be as generous as always in supporting this very worthy cause as we aspire to bring an 8 lane Running  Track to Dungarvan for the next generation of young athletes and for the many hundreds of runners in West Waterford and beyond.  In February of this year with the signing of a lease at St Augustines College Dungarvan we have commenced on a journey to bring this dream to a reality.

West Waterford AC Athletics Track Update

In conjunction with Waterford City and County Council this is a  13.1 mile race along the now famous old Waterford/Dungarvan Railway line. 

RACE LIMIT OF 750 APPLIES

The refund window for this event will open on July 24th Additional places may become available depending on the uptake on refunds from current registrants.

This fantastic amenity opened officially in 2017 and has already experienced visitors from all over the country and beyond. Users are amazed by this 47 km spectacular off-road cycling and walking trail along an old railway line between Waterford and Dungarvan.

Please note this is a point to point race starting near the Coachhouse Kilmacthomas and finishing near Ballinroad, Dungarvan. Entry fee includes bus from Ballinroad to the start line near Kilmacthomas.

As the map shows below, the half-marathon starts near Kilmacthomas and finishes in Dungarvan.

As it was an old railway line, the course is very slightly downhill overall. The old railway line at Kilmacthomas is about 60-metres above sea level while Dungarvan is just above sea level. 

The course is certainly a LOT flatter than the average race on public roads.

Notice : Colligan Woods League in West Waterford - April 2026

West Waterford AC are organising their annual Colligan League again this year in Colligan Woods to the north-west of Dungarvan. There are 5 events on the 5 Wednesday evenings in the month of April 2026.

From West Waterford AC... "Event Description: West Waterford A.C. will once again host a 5 week league in Colligan wood  (By kind permission, Coillte) starting on Wednesday evening the 1st April at 6.30pm continues for another 4 Wednesdays, the 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th of April.

The cost for all 5 nights is €20 and league is open to all over 16's members/non-members.

The venue is Colligan Wood just outside Dungarvan. From Dungarvan take the N72 and then the R672 to Clonmel. Colligan Wood is approx. 1 mile along this road.

Distances are:
2 laps flat ( approx 2.6 miles)
3 laps flat (approx 4 miles) 
5 mile Hills.

There will be prizes for each distance but you must run 4 nights in your preferred distance to be on the final tables.

The 5 week Mark Mason’s Financial Planning Colligan running league for beginners and regular runners and all are welcome once they are over 16 years of age. We would especially encourage newcomers to come along and join in this league in Colligan Wood.

If you don’t fancy the hill section of the league why not come along and give the 2 lap flat route (2.5 miles approximately)  or the 3 lap flat route (4 miles approximately)  or join the 5 mile hill route which is one lap of the wood then up the first hill and down the hill and then across the wooden bridge and road for the second hill coming back down at stone bridge and back into the wood finishing at the wooden bridge. 

The league will start on Wednesday April 1st, and continue for four more Wednesday evenings 08th, 15th, 22nd 29th  .Mass start each evening at 6.30 pm. Online entry is €20 which is for all 5 nights of the league.

From West Waterford AC... 37th ANNUAL KIELY MONUMENTAL COLLIGAN CUP ON SUNDAY 11TH JANUARY

ALL ROADS THIS SUNDAY LEAD TO COLLIGAN WOOD FOR THE 37th ANNUAL KIELY MONUMENTAL COLLIGAN CUP.

This coming Sunday the 11th January we will host the 37th Annual Kiely Monumental Colligan Cup. The McGraths Newsagents Juvenile race starts at 11 am. The senior race has a 12 noon start and is over the usual 5 miles Colligan wood circuit and Juveniles will have a single 1-mile circuit to run. 

The Colligan cup is a unique event in that it is run on a handicap basis where you simply predict your finishing time over a 5 mile run, with the winner being the person who is nearest to that predicted time. This makes the race open to all no matter what your standard is, everyone has the same chance of taking the title. 

Now in its 37th year we would like to thank sincerely our sponsor for all of those 37 years David and Margaret Kiely of Kiely Monumental for their on-going support for the local running club West Waterford AC. So for a great fun event on the yearly running calendar Colligan is where you need to be come next Sunday 11th January

HOW COLLIGAN CUP TIMING SYSTEM WORKS.

The race timing system itself will remain the same as the one Victor Mullins devised all those years ago. The following is how the handicap timing system works, the run begins when the clock starts with the time of the slowest predicted runner’s time, say 60 minutes. As the clock counts backwards down to zero every runner begins when his or her predicted time shows up on the clock. 

The runner with the fastest predicted time will be the last runner to start the race. The winner of the Colligan Cup is the runner who is the first person to cross the finish line after the clock reaches zero-it is that simple. All you have to do is get your prediction right. Remember, no watches allowed or music head phones. So if you would like to become part of local athletics history and have your name inscribed on the now famous Colligan plaque which was erected in the wood some years ago by the race sponsor David Kiely of Kiely Monumental come along next Sunday. 

We must also mention and thank Coillte for their permission and help in letting us hold the race. We urge all going to Colligan on Sunday to please allow plenty of time as parking will be restricted on the road to one side. Please do not park where your car might obstruct the flow of traffic or interfere with the runners. This is a great family event with something for everyone. The Colligan Cup itself will be awarded to the winner of the senior race, while the Shield will be awarded to the first lady finisher. The Victor Mullins cup will be awarded to the 1st runner on the right side of the clock who is running the event for the very first time. The Juvenile Shield will be presented to the Juvenile winner. 

The junior race is organized by the club’s juvenile section over one lap of the Colligan circuit and it gets under way at 11AM sharp and this too is a guess your time handicap event. The senior race will start at 12 noon. All are welcome to participate.

On 30th August  2025 at 9 am West Waterford Athletic Club will host our 7th annual Waterford Greenway Half Marathon .Entries are now open for this event.   The race course is along the Waterford Greenway and in conjunction with Waterford City and County Council covering a distance of 13.1 miles along the now famous old Waterford/Dungarvan Railway line.

WATERFORD GREENWAY HALF MARATHON PRIZES.

ST.JOHNS SPECIAL SCHOOL TO BENEFIT FROM WATERFORD GREENWAY HALF MARATHON.

Each year for the Waterford Greenway half marathon we partner up with a charity that will benefit from the donated monies by the runners taking part in the event. 

This year we are delighted to announce our charity partners for the event will be St.Johns Special School ,Dungarvan  As all our supporters know we try to raise awareness for important causes and charities with our events and this year the chosen charity we are supporting is St. Johns special school which  is a special school for Children with a Mild or Moderate General  Learning Disability, with two classes for children with a Severe to Profound General Learning Disability. 

They cater for boys and girls aged between 4 and 18 years from a wide catchment area which covers Dungarvan and West Waterford, and from Kilmacthomas to East Cork, and areas of South Tipperary. St. John's strives to provide a well-ordered, happy and secure atmosphere where the intellectual, spiritual physical, moral and cultural needs of the pupils are identified and addressed.

The Dromana 5-mile road race from Villierstown to Cappaquin is coming up on Fri 6th June 2025 at 7:30pm.

 Event Description:
31st annual Dromana 5 Mile 6th June 2025.

Next race up is the Dungarvan Leader Dromana 5 Mile from the beautiful village of Villierstown to the cornerstone town of Cappoquin.

This race retraces the steps of Waterford's own world champion and Olympic silver medalist John Treacy when he used to run from his home to school as a teenager.  Please note this is a point to point race starting in Villiarstown and finishing in Cappoquin.

PLEASE NOTE THERE WILL NOT BE A BUS FROM CAPPOQUIN THIS YEAR.  WE ENCOURAGE CAR SHARING AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. REMEMBER THIS IS A POINT TO POINT RACE !

 All number collection will be in the Community Hall in Villierstown from 6.30pm onwards.
Refreshments will be in the hall beside the snooker club just across the road from the finish line.

From West Waterford AC...  "30TH ANNUAL FORDES DAYBREAK WINTER LEAGUE

Event Description: The Fordes Daybreak Winter League will once again take place from the Sports Centre, Quanns Dungarvan for 11 Wednesday nights commencing on Wed 13th November.  We will continue for 6 nights before Christmas bringing  us up to Wednesday 18th December.

After Christmas we will return  on THURSDAY the 2nd January and revert back to Wednesday from Wed. 8th for  4 nights with our final night on the 29th January.

Number pick up will take place at the Sports Centre Dungarvan on Wednesday 6th November at 6.30pm or on first night of the league ON THE 13TH NOVEMBER from 6.15pm.

e hope you will join us again for this annual event and if you haven't been with us before we guarantee you won't be disappointed.  It's an 11 week challenge that can maintain your fitness over the winter and start 2025 on a high note.

As usual there are 2 options to chose from.  The first is the "long" route which is 5.2 miles while the second choice is the "short" route and the distance here is approx 2.5 miles.  Both routes start and finish at the Sports Centre, Quanns.  There are a few very important rules and they are not optional.

No High Vis, No Run.  We will not allow any runner take part who doesnt wear a high vis.  No exceptions.  It has to be a high vis not a lumionous tshirt.

No watches allowed or No Headphones.  This is a very strict rule of this event. We will publish your time asap after the run. Your aim each week will be to run the time you ran the week before or if possible a little faster.  IF YOU WEAR A WATCH YOUR TIME WILL NOT BE RECORDED.

Stewards must be obeyed at all times.  Your participation in this event is an indicator of your compliance with this rule.

Rules of the road apply. You must run on the footpath at all times when available and only cross the road at designated points where stewards will direct you.

YOUR PARTICIPATION IN THE LEAGUE INDICATES THAT YOU AGREE TO ABIDE BY THE ABOVE RULES

Our mission is to introduce as many people as possible to running/jogging.  We don't care how fast or slow you are we just want you to enjoy the league and see the benefits of running for yourself.

Lead group at 2kms

The big race in Munster this weekend was the Waterford Greenway Half-Marathon on Saturday 31st August organised by West Waterford AC.

The entries for this race opened on the 4th of July and all 750 places sold out in just 4 days.

On race day itself, the weather conditions couldn't have been nicer with blue skies, sunshine and a light easterly tailwind. Maybe a little warm for racing but it really showed off the scenic route.

From West Waterford AC... "Our first race in our summer road race programme for 2024 will get underway with the AHS Tuning Ireland sponsored Ballinroad 5k on Friday May 10th at 7.30 pm.  

Firstly our sincere thanks to John Coleman of AHS Tuning for his continued sponsorship of this race which he has sponsored for the past 9 years.

This year once again we are delighted to be able to help and support the local community in Ballinroad as the local soccer club Ballinroad A.F.C. will be benefactors of the race , with monies donated towards their Pitch fund. 

The race will incorporate a fun run/walk with proceeds from them going towards the clubs fund for this project.

From West Waterford AC... ALL ROADS THIS SUNDAY LEAD TO COLLIGAN WOOD FOR THE 35th ANNUAL KIELY MONUMENTAL COLLIGAN CUP.

This coming Sunday the 14th January 2024, we will host the 35th Annual Kiely Monumental Colligan Cup. The Juvenile race starts at 11 am. The senior race has a 12 noon start and is over the usual 5 miles Colligan wood circuit and Juveniles will have a single 1-mile circuit to run. 

The Colligan cup is a unique event in that it is run on a handicap basis where you simply predict your finishing time over a 5 mile run, with the winner being the person who is nearest to that predicted time.

This makes the race open to all no matter what your standard is, everyone has the same chance of taking the title. Now in its 35th year we would like to thank sincerely our sponsor for all of those 35 years David and Margaret Kiely of Kiely Monumental for their on-going support for the local running club West Waterford AC. So for a great fun event on the yearly running calendar Colligan is where you need to be come next Sunday 14th January.

HOW COLLIGAN CUP TIMING SYSTEM WORKS.

The race timing system itself will remain the same as the one Victor Mullins devised 35 years ago. The following is how the handicap timing system works, the run begins when the clock starts with the time of the slowest predicted runner’s time, say 60 minutes. As the clock counts backwards down to zero every runner begins when his or her predicted time shows up on the clock. 

The runner with the fastest predicted time will be the last runner to start the race. The winner of the Colligan Cup is the runner who is the first person to cross the finish line after the clock reaches zero-it is that simple. All you have to do is get your prediction right. Remember, no watches allowed or music head phones. So if you would like to become part of local athletics history and have your name inscribed on the now famous Colligan plaque which was erected in the wood some years ago by the race sponsor David Kiely of Kiely Monumental come along next Sunday. 

We must also mention and thank Coillte for their permission and help in letting us hold the race. We urge all going to Colligan on Sunday to please allow plenty of time as parking will be restricted on the road to one side. Please do not park where your car might obstruct the flow of traffic or interfere with the runners. This is a great family event with something for everyone. The Colligan Cup itself will be awarded to the winner of the senior race, while the Shield will be awarded to the first lady finisher. The Victor Mullins cup will be awarded to the 1st runner on the right side of the clock who is running the event for the very first time. The Juvenile Shield will be presented to the Juvenile winner. 

The junior race is organized by the club’s juvenile section over one lap of the Colligan circuit and it gets under way at 11AM sharp and this too is a guess your time handicap event. The senior race will start at 12 noon. All are welcome to participate.

West Waterford are organising the Murray's Pharmacy Brickey 5K on Sunday 12th November 2023 at 11am. Entry is €10.

HELVICK HEAD LIFEBOAT TO BENEFIT FROM EUROFINS WATERFORD GREENWAY HALF MARATHON.

Each year for the Eurofins Waterford Greenway half marathon we partner up with a charity that will benefit from the donated monies by the runners taking part in the event. This year we are delighted to announce our charity partners for the event will be the Helvick RNLI.

 Helvick Head Lifeboat Station has been serving the community for many years. The RNLI charity saves lives at sea as its volunteers provide a 24-hour search and rescue service from Helvick head as they operate a B class Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat.We all know the valuable work this organisation do in our community and hopefully we can raise some much needed funds as we know they are a voluntary organisation who rely on the public for support.log on to club web site www.westwaterfordathletics.org and follow the link on home page for GREENWAY all race information and entry link is available here or click the link here for your entry

Please note this event is expected to sell out fast.

This fantastic amenity opened officially in 2017 and has already experienced visitors from all over the country and beyond. Users are amazed by this 47 km spectacular off-road cycling and walking trail along an old railway line between Waterford and Dungarvan.

Please note this is a point to point race starting at the Coachhouse Kilmacthomas and finishing near Ballinroad, Dungarvan. Entry fee includes bus from Ballinroad to the start line in Kilmacthomas.

As the map shows below, the half-marathon starts near Kilmacthomas and finishes in Dungarvan.

As it was an old railway line, the course is very slightly downhill overall. The old railway line at Kilmacthomas is about 60-metres above sea level while Dungarvan is just above sea level. 

The course is certainly a LOT flatter than the average race on public roads.
