The Route...The Run/Walk commences on the 19th of August at 12 noon with runners and walkers setting off from Kilcornan Community Centre.  Heading downhill on the N69 they will take a right turn at the entrance to Curraghchase where the route to the carpark is tree-lined and very picturesque.  Coming down the hill to the carpark, participants will first see the man-made lake and to the right, the imposing Curraghchase House.  Moving up the steep hill to the house they will pass the Gerard McDonnell memorial tree planted in memory of local Kilcornan man Gerard who was the first Irishman to climb the summit of K2.
Runners and walkers will pass beside Curraghchase House which was built on the ruins of a castle.   Curraghchase House was home to the DeVeres from the mid 1600’s to Dec 1941 when the house was destroyed by a fire.  The poet Aubrey De Vere was born here in 1814 and died in 1902.
The participants will pass by an avenue that is Yew lined and was known as the ‘Sunset Walk’.  The runners will pass by the Pet Cemetery and further on ‘Little Heaven’ where the poet Aubrey De Vere meditated.  Many species of tree abound here;  Native Oak, Californian Redwood, Monkey Puzzles and Douglas Fir to name but a few.

On leaving the Arboretum the runners will then enter a heavily wooded area finally coming to a ruined wall and gateway which led into the Deer Park.  Onward the runners will pass through the Caravan Park and again through a heavily wooded path and finally reaching a roadway.  Turning right runners are now heading for McDonaghs Corner.  Take a right turn here and we are on what was once the main road to Limerick which would carry you on to Stonehall Village and onto the Ferry Bridge.

At McDonaghs Corner, a forge shop and even a ‘Shebeen’ once existed but are gone many years.  Moving along this road we see Holly Park House and estate on the left.  The road dips sharply and is closely surrounded by trees on each side. The Participants will reach a crossroads, turn left here, passing over a tunnel which lies under the main road, and eventually return to the finish line near the Community Centre.

Please note that the Community Centre is located next to the GAA pitches behind Kilcornan Primary School. See the entrance above.

Race notice...Ardmore 5 Mile Road Race - Fri 17th Aug 2012

The tenth and final race in the Ger Wyley Sports Summer Series is coming on Friday, the 17th of August at 7:30pm.

Update...Fri 17th Aug...Please note that the registration will be at An Tobar bar rather than the GAA grounds due to flooding. There is plenty of parking available there near the sea front.

Notes from the organisers...West Waterford AC...
AN TOBAR ARDMORE 5 Mile....The final race of the summer series is almost upon us with the tenth and final race taking place on Friday night, August 17th at 7.30 pm, the 17th annual “An Tobar” Ardmore 5. Entries for the race will be taken at the GAA centre in Ardmore. The entry fee is the usual €8 and the presentation of prizes along with refreshments will take place in “An Tobar”, courtesy of our race sponsor. Along with the prizes for the race, the overall summer series presentation will also take place on the night.

SUMMER SERIES VOUCHERS
As Ardmore is the final race in the series, the vouchers for all those that have entered the series will be presented on the night. Vouchers will only be given to those that have entered the series which was separate to the race entries. The deadline for entering the series was the Dromana race and no further entries will be accepted. Anyone who has run any 6 of the ten races will automatically receive a 25 euro voucher and anyone who has run all ten races will be included in a draw for one of two pairs of Nike Pegasus running shoes, one for the ladies and one for the men, thanks to our very generous sponsors Ger Wyley Sports and Nike Ireland.

Ardmore is located just off the N25 Cork to Dungarvan road and is within easy easy to runners in both Cork and Waterford. (Just look for the signposts for the R673 road to Ardmore)

Entries will be taken at the local GAA grounds which is just north of Ardmore. See map below...

Note that the GAA grounds are about 800m from the finish line and just under a mile from the start line. Leave plenty of time to park, enter and to run to the start.

The course is basically one and a half loops of a triangular course. You start on a quiet country road at the northern end of the course. From here, you run back in towards Ardmore and then do a small loop around the village.

Second time around, you don't do the small loop. Instead, you head towards the finish line.

As a course, it has a number of small hills. The steepest one is part of the small loop around Ardmore itself but it's pretty short. The other hills can be considered as 'short pulls' rather than anything too serious. You should expect to set a reasonable time.

Refreshments and prizes afterwards at the An Tobar bar. Location in map above.

Limerick...Results of the Kilmeedy 5 mile road race - Fri 3rd Aug 2012

A record 128 runners turned out for this years Kilmeedy 5 mile road race in Co.Limerick. This was the 8th race in the ongoing Ballyhoura Active Series. The first man home was Mike Cunningham of Bilboa AC in a time of 27:35 while the first woman was Breeda Lynch in 31:56.

Race report from the organisers.....
Mike Curly Cunningham from Bilboa Athletic Club wound his way to victory in the annual Kilmeedy 5 mile held on August 3rd. His winning time of 27 minutes 35 seconds was just three ahead of clubmate Declan Moore. They set a ferocious pace at the race start, reaching the mile mark at Gilbournes gates in 4.55 along with Ennis Track runner Patrick Quinn. By  three miles at Belville, the Ennis runner had been dropped and turning by Kilmeedy church Cunningham had the narrowest of leads which he held to the line in front of the Glen Bar.

Our ladies title this year went to Breeda Lynch from Doneen in Limerick a clear winner in 31.56 over a minute ahead of Clare's Loretto Duggan with Orla Power in third. The junior womens race also went to Limerick as Saoirse Callaghan Herrity of Limerick Athletic Club won her section and Patrick Hayes took the boys title.

In the over forty section, Edward McDonnell of Mallow was victorious and Verena Tarpey, Doneen Athletic Club won her women's race. Kieran O'Connor from North Cork lifted the mens over fifty title and Berna Egan from Newcastle West won the womens section. John Brady an old friend of this writer took the over fifty five honours for North Cork. Carmel MacDomhnaill of the host club West Limerick won her section here. Now I must pay tribute to West Limerick Athletic Club. Kilmeedy is their fourth road race to organise in the last month in the area and they do trojan work to promote athletics. Once again their help is invaluable at the Kilmeedy race. We had one hundred and twenty eight runners this year, a new record with over forty walkers. Being involved with the Ballyhoura Series of Road Races had been of huge help this year. . We appreciate
also the assistance by Kilmeedy Community Development and their excellent facility in Arás Íde.

Kerry...Castleisland 5k Walk, Jog, Run Series...Aug-Sep 2012

One of the main athletic clubs in Kerry...An Ríocht AC...are holding a series of three races in August and September 2012.

They will be run over a 5 km course and are suitable for runners of all abilities....from absolute beginners to experienced runners.

Castleisland in the heart of Co.Kerry is within easy reach of several other towns including Killarney, Tralee and Listowel.

You can enter each race at An Ríocht AC track which is on the western side of the town. The entry fee is just €5 per event. The race starts out on the main road outside O'Donoghues garage. You then run through the town before doing a loop on quiet country roads to the south-east of the town.

This is the only section where the course overlaps by around 200 metres.

The start line outside O'Donoghues Garage

The road junction near the An Ríocht AC track. First time round, it's just after the start and you run straight through the town. As you get near the end of the race, you turn left here and down the quiet road towards the finish on the track.

If you are not familiar with the location of the An Ríocht AC track and clubhouse then as you can see from the the photo above, it is clearly signposted from the main road that runs through the town.

The race headquarters for the race is the LIT Campus which is on the N24 road which runs around to the north of the town of Clonmel itself.

Course.........The race starts on the main road about 1 km west of the LIT Campus. The finish line is located at the campus.

The first 2.5 miles of the race are a steady uphill pull. In terms of difficulty, it's not too serious especially coming so early in the race but it's a pull all the same so expect to lose a bit time here.
After this, the road drops slowly before a bit of a climb again around the 5 mile mark. From here, it's downhill to the River Suir and the road stays flat as it follows the river east to Clonmel.

From the centre of the town, there is a climb back up to the roundabout just after 11 miles and then, it's a fast run all of the ways to the finish.

Certainly not the flattest of courses but the hills aren't that bad either. Expect to set a reasonable time but it may not be as fast as say a flat course.
