Start of the 2023 MSD Clonmel 4-mile road race

There was a big turnout for this year's MSD Clonmel 4 Mile Road Race on St Stephen's Day with a total of 424 runners crossing the finish line, up a whopping 47% on last year.

In the men's race, Sean Tobin of Clonmel AC missed out on the course record of 17:45 he set in 2019 by just one second, recording a time of 17:46. Peter Lynch (KCH), last year's winner, was 38 seconds faster on this occasion when finishing second 17:59. Paul Hartnett (East Cork) was third in 18:51.

In the women's race, Shona Heaslip (Riocht) and Ann-Marie McGlynn (Letterkenny) both bettered the course record when both finished in a time of 20:46, well inside the previous best of 21:32 set by Lizzie Lee in 2017. Lee, in third place, was also inside her old record with her time of of 21:25.

Notice: Dromcollogher Carnival 4 mile road race, Co.Limerick - Mon 27th June 2022

The annual Dromcollogher Carnival 4 mile road race is coming up on Monday evening, the 27th of June 2022 at 8pm...

As a race, it may not be as high profile as say those located closer to say Limerick or Cork City but it is an event with a lot of character and a long history. The race was originally started back in the time of the original running boom in the late 70's and early 80's by Christy Brosnan and Joe Quaid of North Cork AC. The original idea was for it to be part of the Dromcollogher Carnival which has been going since the 1940's and for the race to take place on Monday evening, a tradition that survives to this day.

In it's heyday, the race used to attract some of the top runners from all over Munster even though the prizes were always modest in comparison to other races at the time. On one occasion, Liam O'Brien from Cork won the race the day after winning the National 3000m steeplechase title! The triangle shaped course started and finished in the main square of the town much to the delight of the crowds. This did however mean that the race was in fact 'slightly' longer than the advertised 4 miles ;o)

One of the other unusual features of the race at the time was that the winner received a small porcelain figurine. One of the biggest employers at that time in the town was Irish Dresden, a German company which made high quality collectable porcelain items in the town which employed over 60 people, a huge number in what was and still is a rural area.

West Limerick AC are helping out with the organisation of the race and they are putting up a cup in memory of Christy Brosnan who unfortunately has now passed away. This replaces the old cup which was named after Marky O'Shea who used to run in the local races of the late 70's and early 80's barefoot, a long time before minimalist running and Vibram Five Fingers became all the rage ;o)

Getting there.....Dromcollogher is located to the west of Charleville near the Limerick - Cork border. If you are coming from say Limerick city then the easiest way is probably to head south towards Cork and turn off at Charleville and follow the directions for Newtownshandrum, Milford and Dromcollogher. If you are travelling north from Cork then turn off at Buttevant and go via Liscarroll.

As you enter the town from the east then you should see that the road forks into two where the central square is. Take the right here, drive a few hundred metres on what is a very straight road and you will pass the start line just opposite a service station. The GAA hall where the entries will be taken is just beyond this on the left.

A total of 69 runners took part in this low key race organised by Star of the Laune AC in Kerry. There were 44 men and 25 women in the race.

Tipperary: Results of the Clonmel 4 mile - Thurs 26th Dec 2019

There was another big turnout for this years MSD 4 mile race in Clonmel on St.Stephen's Day with 453 runners taking part.  The race attracted a high quality field with the first 40 running faster than 6-minute miles.

The race was won by Sean Tobin of Clonmel AC in a time of 17m 46s, a new national record for a 4 mile road race.

Notice: Clonmel 4 mile road race in Tipperary - Thurs 26th Dec 2019

The big race in Tipperary over the Christmas period is the annual 4 mile race in Clonmel on Thursday the 26th of December 2019.

From the organisers Clonmel AC...MSD 4 Mile – St Stephen’s Day, 12 Noon
 
This very popular race takes place again on St Stephen’s Day, the 31st promotion of this event. The Club is very grateful to MSD for sponsoring this year’s event. The Club started promoting this event in 1989 to encourage people to participate in the Sport over the festive season. As such we have seen it grown in stature over the years and it is now firmly established in the athletics calendar, as it caters for all levels of fitness. 

Race Registration will be taken on the day at Colaiste Cheitinn, the Mall from 10am onwards. The entry fee is 10 Euros. The route is relatively flat and is noted for fast times.

This year there will be Prizes for the following categories, Men: 1st 5 Men, 1st 2 0/40, 0/45, 0/50, 1st 0/55, 0/60, 0/65, 0/70 and 0/75 plus 1st 2 Junior Men. The list of Prizes for the Ladies is as follows: the 1st 5 Senior Ladies, 1st 2 0/35, 0/40, 0/45, 1st 0/50 0/55 and 0/60 plus 1st 2 Junior Ladies.

There will also be some great Spot Prizes for down the field finishers to be won, so come along and participate in a great Sporting event. This is an ideal event to raise funds for local charities.

There will also be Post Race Refreshments in the Colaiste Cheitinn, the mall afterwards as well as the Presentation of the Prize Awards.

There will also be Post Race Refreshments in the Vocational School. This year’s event will be Chip timed by Premier Timing Systems. This event has an Athletics Ireland Race Permit.

Notice : Knockanore 4 mile in West Waterford - Thurs 28th June 2018

This 4 mile is coming up in Knockare, West Waterford on Thursday the 28th of June 2018 at 7pm.
The entry fee is €10 for runners and results with times will be available afterwards.

Knockanore is a small rural community on the western side of the River Blackwater and just across the border from Co.Cork.

If you're not familiar with the area then look for the turn off on the R634 Youghal to Tallow road. The photo below shows the turn off for Knockanore at a area called The Pike.

The race HQ is in the local community centre which is next to the national school and church.

Course... The 4 mile course is a loop to the west of Knockanore on quiet country roads.

Profile... A mixture of uphill and downhill running....

Waterford...Results of the Kilmacthomas 4 mile - Sun 25th Feb 2018

A total of 195 runners turned out for this 4 mile race in Kilmacthomas, Co.Waterford on Sunday the 25th of February 2018. That's a jump of 32% on the numbers last year that turned out for the 5 mile edition so the change to the shorter distance and putting half of the course on the popular Greenway seems to have been a good move.

Notice...Clonmel 4 mile road race - Tues 26th Dec 2017

From the organisers Clonmel AC...This event has grown in stature every year, with a record entry last year of 511 participants. The course is relatively flat and ideally suited for anyone who would like to go for a jog, run or walk and the atmosphere is brilliant.

The winners of both male & female race will receive €150 each!

Prizes will be given for the following categories:
Men:
 1st 5 Men,
 1st two 0/40, 0/45, 0/50,
 1st 0/55, 0/60, 0/65, 0/70 and 0/75
1st two Junior Men (ages 16-18yrs only)

Ladies:
1st 5 Ladies,
1st two 0/35, 0/40, 0/45,
1st 0/50 0/55 , 0/60
1st two Junior Ladies (ages 16-18 only)

There will also be Spot Prizes for down the field finishers to add to the fun of this event.

Post Race Refreshments will available in the Vocational School where Prize giving takes place. This year’s event will be Chip timed by Premier Timing Systems & has an Athletics Ireland Race Permit & is strictly over 16's.

Entries will be taken at the Vocational School, the Mall from 10 to 11:45.
Entry fee is €10 (online admin fee €1.90)
We ask all local participants to come early and enter as we are expecting over 500 to participate in this year’s event.
 
The race will start just past the Loretto Convent and the athletes will proceed down to Sir Thomas’s Bridge and back up the Waterford Road to finish just between the sporting Press & the Showgrounds on  Davis road.

Notice…Rathmore 4 mile race, Kerry…Sun 9th July 2017

Rathmore Ladies GAA are holding a 4 mile run/walk on Sunday the 9th of July 2017 at 1pm. Organised in association with Gneeveguilla AC, it will start and finish at Rathmore GAA grounds which are to the south-west of Rathmore in Co.Kerry.

 Located on the Cork-Kerry border, this 4 mile race should be of interest to runners from both counties.

Limerick...Results of the Dromcollogher Carnival 4 mile road race - Mon 3rd July 2017

The annual Dromcollogher Carnivalal 4 mile road race was held on Monday the 3rd of July 2017 and attracted a nice field of 157 runners.

Waterford...Results of the Knockanore 4 mile - Thurs 29th June 2017

This 4 miler was held in Knockanore in West Waterford on what was a very busy few days for races in the area. On the Wednesday, there was a 5k in Mount Uniacke and Ballyduff Upper. On Friday, there was a 6 miler near Dungarvan. A few years ago, there would only be a handful in a month as opposed to four in three days.

Limerick...Results of the Kilfinane 4 mile road race - Fri 9th June 2017

130 runners turned out for this years Kilfinane 4 mile road race on Friday the 9th of June 2017. This was a drop of 26% on last year and as can be seen from the chart above, it's the first big drop since the race started. Looking at the race photos, it's seems to have been a wet evening so perhaps that accounts for part of the drop.
