Notice...Dungarvan 10 mile road race in West Waterford - Sun 4th Feb 2018

The annual John Treacy Dungarvan 10 mile road race will be held on Sunday the 4th of February 2018 at 1:30pm and it sells out every year. Please note that entries open at 9am on Wednesday the 1st of November 2017.

With the demise of the Ballycotton 10 mile race in March, there is bound to be more interest in the Dungarvan race. If you want a good 10 mile race in the Spring of 2018, I would suggest that you enter as soon as possible before it closes.

The entry fee for 2018 is €25 and that includes a high quality Nike dry-fit top. There are no refunds on race entry fees. As in previous years, there will be no late entries except for elite entries, which will be taken up to Friday January 29th 2018.

This is one of the best road races in Munster and it attracts runners from all over the country. There is a limit of 2,750 entries and it will sell out.

From West Waterford AC......For the first year this year we donated monies from the race to a charity. SERT. "South East Radiotherapy Trust" was the chosen charity and we were delighted that you the runners through your generous donated €2000 to this most worthy charity who do great work transporting cancer patients and others to and from hospital for treatment .

On behalf of SERT Liz Walsh came along on Sunday and was presented with the cheque by John Treacy on behalf of all the runners who donated to the cause. 

Event notice...John Treacy Dungarvan 10 mile road race - Sun 26th Jan 2014

Now as we head towards the end of 2013, it's time to look ahead to the Spring of 2014 and what lies ahead. This is the traditional season for 10 mile road races in Munster and the four big ones are Ballycotton, Dungarvan, Mallow and Cobh.

The first one up is the John Treacy Dungarvan 10 mile road race on Sunday the 26th of January 2014. This is for me one of the best road races in Munster and it attracts runners from all over the country. Please note there is an entry limit of 2,000 this year and it will almost certainly close well before race day. The entry fee is €20 and that includes a Nike dry-fit running top. It really is an excellent top and as good as you'd get in any race. The entries are flying in already so enter asap

At a photo launch recently in the towns Walton Park, John Treacy along with race sponsors and club committee members, details were announced of the 23rd Annual John Treacy Dungarvan 10 Mile Road Race.

The event now in its 23rd year has established itself as a must run race on the Irish road running calendar with participants from all four corners of the country and beyond participating. The race has grown year on year and is a pre-entry race only with the close date January 13th for the January 26th 2014 race or when 2,000 entries is reached .Please note that race entries closed in a matter weeks last year leaving hundreds disappointed on not being able to participate.( please get your entry in immediately )

To stage such a big event of course requires good sponsors and we are fortunate to have the support of the local authorities, Go Dungarvan, GlaxoSmithKline, Dungarvan Shopping Centre, Glanbia, Optimum Nutrition, Tipperary Water, Flahavan’s, Nike Ireland along with many other local businesses and individuals who are all giving valuable support helping to make the day a great occasion for the town of Dungarvan.

Elite entries will be accepted up to Friday 18th January the standards set down are Men 55 minutes and Ladies 60 Minutes. These times must have been posted within the last 3 years. Proof of these qualifying times may be required.

The John Treacy Dungarvan 10 mile road race got a great turnout of 1261 runners today in somewhat wet conditions. While conditions were a little damp, it was in truth more or less ideal for a race with a large quality field setting some fine times.

Preview of the Dungarvan 10 mile road race - Sun 29th Jan 2012

The big race in Munster next weekend is of course the Dungarvan 10 mile in Waterford. There was a limit of 1,500 entries for this race and it was full at the end of last December. There will be no entries taken on the day.

Only a few years ago, this race only attracted a few hundred runners. The organisers, West Waterford AC have built on it year after year until it is now one of the main 10 mile road races in the country. This of course didn't happen by accident. They put on a well organised event every year and this is reflected in the fact that people keep going back.

At this stage, all entrants should have received their race packs by post. The main item in this is the race number which has a timing chip on the back.

Mallow 10...Please note that Mallow AC will be taking entries in the Sports Centre for their own 10 mile race on Monday, the 19th of March. Details on the Running in Cork website

Location...What I am going to concentrate on here are additional details that may not be so obvious on the race website.

Directions...If you are coming from the Cork direction on the main N25 road, you will need to turn right at the first roundabout at the entrance to the town. As you drive through Dungarvan, you will see a church on the right.....

Take the right just after the church and the Sports Centre is just down this road...

Please note that unless you arrive early, parking in this area may be full. There are plenty of other areas to park in the town.

Distances...Sports Hall to Start Line...1 km, Finish Line to Sports Hall...1.5 kms
Course...The Dungarvan 10 mile road race has a reputation of being a fast course. If your target is trying out for a PB then this is the one to run. The route takes in a small loop through the town before leaving Dungarvan to take in a bigger loop in the countryside.

The start point is approximately 1 km from the Sports Centre. The road here is very wide and there is plenty of space. Please note that your time starts with the gun. Even with 1000+ runners taking part, there is no major delay in everyone starting at more or less the same time.

As you can see from the image below, the road rises just after the start. Coming at the start of the race, it's a lot easier than later when you're tired.

After an initial steep section, the going gets easier as you begin the loop around the town. As you can see from the image below, you keep running straight.....take in a short loop.....and then run downhill and re-join the main road and turn right.

You then run back down towards the start line....passing the 1 mile mark....and then on towards the roundabout at the entrance to the town, you take a left and out the main road to the south....

The course here is now very fast. You will be running inside the hard shoulder, the road is flat up to the 2 mile mark before going gradually downhill......then it's time to turn off right...

Now you are onto a quiet narrow country road and the road rises again gently...

Eventually, the road widens as it approaches the town and an industrial area. The road here is pretty fast and flat. Not long after the 3 mile mark, you rejoin the main road...

However, you're only on this short section of main road for about 100 metres. Then it's straight through the roundabout and take the 2nd left...

.....and then it's onto a reasonly flat road as you leave the town...

The next mile or so is reasonably flat. There are a few very small drags but certainly nothing worth noting. Just after the 5 mile mark, you reach the most westerly point as the course takes a sharp left. As you approach the corner, you will see other faster runners at the other side of the field...

This section is narrow but dead flat until you turn right at the next junction...

Just around the corner, you soon pass the 6 mile mark. This is followed by a gentle uphill section.....

Nothing too serious but coming at 6 miles, it can have an impact. Eventually, the road flattens out and this is followed by a steep downhill section...

At the end of the hill, you cross a small bridge over the River Brickey and take a sharp left...

The road now follows the river so it's dead flat............(well, slightly downhill but nothing that you would notice ;o)

It's like this for about 1.3 miles as you pass the 7 and 8 mile mark along the way. At around 8.2 miles, you rejoin the main N25 (pic above) and you run inside the hard shoulder as you head back towards Dungarvan. Initially the road is flat but soon begins to climb. It never gets too serious but coming at 8.3 miles, it can have a huge impact if you are tired. This is arguably the hardest part of the course.

Soon, you pass the 9 mile mark and you are now back on familar ground as you are on the same section of road that you were running on earlier. The road begins to flatten out and it stays like this until you reach the roundabout at the entrance to the town. At this stage, you are getting very close to the finish....

Just after the roundabout, you'll see the sign for the turn off to the left...

Once you turn left, it's only a short run of about 100 metres to the finish.

At the finish line, there will be a timing mat which will record your time as you cross it. The sports hall is 1.5 kms from the finish.

21st ANNUAL JOHN TREACY DUNGARVAN 10 MILE ROAD RACE.

The organisers are delighted to report that entries are well and truly on target for the 21ST Annual John Treacy Dungarvan 10 mile road race on Sunday January 29th at 1 pm. If you haven’t already done so there are a number of ways you can enter, Through the designated race web site which can be found at www.dungarvan10mile.org, you will find out all you need to know about the race, you can also enter on line here or down load an entry form and post it to us, we will also have entry forms at the winter league every Wednesday night and we will accept entries here also. Please note the race is pre-entry only which means that we will not accept any entries either on the day of the race or after the closing date of Monday January 16th. If we reach the entry cut off of 1,500 before January 16th we will also be closing entries at that. The entry fee of 15 euro will be accepted up to December 16th and after that it will be 20 euro. The number of entries received each day is increasing so get your entry in today for the must run race of the year.

It's that time of year again when we forward to the various 10 mile road races in Munster. One of the main ones is the John Treacy Dungarvan 10 mile road race on Sunday the 29th of January 2012. This race has really taken off in recent years and it now has an entry limit of 1,500. Please note that there are NO entries on the day of the race, you must pre-enter.

The entry fee is €15 if you enter before the 16th of December. For a well organised race with chip timing, after race refreshments and a dry-fit running top, that's pretty good. So if you going then enter early.

If you enter after the 16th of December and before the final closing date of the 16th of January then the entry fee is €20.

Honory Life Membership of West Waterford AC for John Treacy

The annual John Treacy festival was held in John's home village of Villierstown Co Waterford over last weekend and the main events of the weekend were the two fun runs, the 1K and the 5K.  John Treacy himself took part and was accompanied by numerous young children on the 1K loop. Between the finish of the 1k and the start of the 5k a presentation was made to the legendary John Treacy when West Waterford Athletic Club presented John with honorary life membership which was a fitting tribute in recognition of his world class achievements.

James Veale spoke to the crowd present of John’s World Cross Country wins in 1978 and 1979 and his Olympic silver medal win in the marathon in Los Angeles in 1984.

Race Report.......Out of the many road races that I have taken part in recently, I have to say that this one was excellent. It was a well organised race and everything seem to go really well. Plenty of parking, loads of stewards, chip timing, etc. In fact, you really got the impression that if 1,000 runners had turned up then they could have handled that many with ease.


The biggest suprise this year with this race was the drop in numbers. A total of 280 ran on the day and that compares to roughly 400 last year. That's a 30% drop. Why??


Make no mistake....This is an excellent race. Entry on the day was €20 and you got an excellent dry-fit running top for that as well. Mind you, it's bright enough to be seen from space but that's another issue ;o)


Why the drop? Are there too many other races on? Lack of publicity?

Night of Champions - A Night to Remeber

James Veale, West Waterford AC has sent a report on the event at the Town Hall Dungarvan, and a selection of photos...

Despite a small enough attendances at the town hall theatre last Saturday night for the night of champions seminar with John Treacy, Eamon Coughlan and Catherina Mc Kiernan it still turned out to be an occasion to remember for those in attendance, Organised by Waterford Sports Partnership as part of the John Treacy 10 mile classic weekend the organisers are to be congratulated on bringing together three of Irelands all time legends of the sport..

MC for the evening was that great athletics correspondent of radio and press Fintan Walsh and he brought his own style and humour to the occasion making it a most enjoyable and relaxed atmosphere for all. All three guests spoke of their time competing at the top of their sport and then a piece of video was shown of them in some of their more high profile races. A question and answers session followed which gave a very interesting insight into the training and dedication required to compete on the world stage .There was plenty of photo opportunity and chat after the formalities of the evening rounding off a great night of athletics nostalgia for all.
