2) There is a choice of two distances... 2.4 miles (3.9kms) OR 5.2 miles (8.4kms)

From West Waterford AC...  "29TH ANNUAL FORDES DAYBREAK WINTER LEAGUE

The Fordes Daybreak Winter League will once again take place from the Sports Centre, Quanns Dungarvan for 11 Wednesday nights commencing on Wed 15th November.  We will continue for 6 nights before Christmas bringing  us up to Wednesday 20th December.

After Christmas we will return  on Wednesday the 3rd January and continue for 5 nights with our final night on the 31st January.

Number pick up will take place at the Sports Centre Dungarvan on Wednesday 8th November at 6.30pm or on first night of the league from 6.15pm.

We hope you will join us again for this annual event and if you haven't been with us before we guarantee you won't be disappointed.  It's an 11 week challenge that can maintain your fitness over the winter and start 2024 on a high note.

As usual there are 2 options to chose from.  The first is the "long" route which is 5.2 miles while the second choice is the "short" route and the distance here is approx 2.5 miles.  Both routes start and finish at the Sports Centre, Quanns.  There are a few very important rules and they are not optional.

No High Vis, No Run.  We will not allow any runner take part who doesn't wear a high vis.  No exceptions.  It has to be a high vis not a luemenous t-shirt.

No watches allowed or No Headphones.

 This is a very strict rule of this event. We will publish your time asap after the run. Your aim each week will be to run the time you ran the week before or if possible a little faster.

Stewards must be obeyed at all times.  Your participation in this event is an indicator of your compliance with this rule.

Rules of the road apply. You must run on the footpath at all times when available and only cross the road at designated points where stewards will direct you.

From West Waterford AC....This league is sponsored by Kevin Ford of Forde's Daybreak on the Youghal road is the country’s original winter league is now proudly in its 25th year and will be held over a period of 13 weeks this year with 7 nights of league running before Christmas and 6 nights after Christmas.

We will have the traditional Christmas break finishing on Wednesday night December 19th, our final league run in 2018, and the league will resume on Wednesday night January 2nd.

Entry will remain the same as previous years 2 Euro per night to members of the club and 3 Euro to non-members. As was the case last year there will be a once off payment on registration night of 5 Euro. 

This extra amount will be used to cover the cost of purchasing the numbers which are quite expensive but they are waterproof and have to be used each night for the duration of the league. 

This year for the first time also you can pay for the entire league with a once off payment and save yourself some money by doing so. For club members you can pay 30 euro (this includes the 5 euro once off number payment) and for non members you can pay a once off payment of 40 euro which also includes the 5 euro number payment charge.

The various division positions are made during the Christmas break and will be displayed weekly on our return night in January. 

Remember rule number one, no bib no run! Rule number 2, no watches. Rule number 3 no head phones or any music devices. 

With the huge increases in numbers in our recent leagues at the Friary we are expecting big numbers this year for the winter league. We urge all those who did come along to the Friary not to stop running now after making such great strides at the leagues but to continue by taking part in the winter league, you will be glad you did.

Notice...Dungarvan 10k in Waterford - Sun 11th March 2018

This 10k race in Dungarvan is coming up on Sunday the 11th of March 2018 and is organised by West Waterford AC.

Details from the organisers....36th ANNUAL DEISE COLLEGE DUNGARVAN 10K.

The final race in the Michael Roche carpets spring series, the Déise College Dungarvan 10K will take place at 11am. Now in its 36th year and one of the oldest races on the local road running calendar the Déise College  Dungarvan 10k is always one of the more popular races on the busy West Waterford AC calendar. The event will also see a number of perpetual trophies being presented. We have the Seamus Power memorial trophy to the first male finisher and the Mikey Roche memorial trophy for the first local female finisher. We will be using the fast canal circuit for this race,with the race headquarters at the Dungarvan GAA club house which is where the presentation will also take place.

The Michael Roche Carpets series prizes will also be awarded after this race.

Notice...Dungarvan 10 mile road race in West Waterford - Sun 4th Feb 2018

The annual John Treacy Dungarvan 10 mile road race will be held on Sunday the 4th of February 2018 at 1:30pm and it sells out every year. Please note that entries open at 9am on Wednesday the 1st of November 2017.

With the demise of the Ballycotton 10 mile race in March, there is bound to be more interest in the Dungarvan race. If you want a good 10 mile race in the Spring of 2018, I would suggest that you enter as soon as possible before it closes.

The entry fee for 2018 is €25 and that includes a high quality Nike dry-fit top. There are no refunds on race entry fees. As in previous years, there will be no late entries except for elite entries, which will be taken up to Friday January 29th 2018.

This is one of the best road races in Munster and it attracts runners from all over the country. There is a limit of 2,750 entries and it will sell out.

As and from November 1st, entries will open for the 27th Annual John Treacy Dungarvan 10 which will be held on Sunday February 4th 2018, with a start time of 1.30pm. West Waterford Athletic Club have announced details of the event which has established itself as a must run race on the Irish road running calendar with participants from all four corners of the country and beyond participating. The race has grown year on year and is a pre entry race which will close when 2,750 entries is reached. ( please note this race was full in a very short time last year ).

Notice...West Waterford AC Open Cross Country Event in Dungarvan - Sun 1st Oct 2017

From West Waterford AC....24th  ANNUAL OPEN CROSS COUNTRY EVENT FOR THE JAMES HUGHES PERPETUAL CUP.

The club’s annual Open Cross Country event at St. Augustine’s College has a starting time of 12 noon. The race is open to all and caters for all levels of runners from elite runners, club runners, fun runners and joggers. All are more than welcome to come along and have a run on the famed Friary course. The distances on the day will be 2 laps of the College grounds for the ladies which is 4km in total and the men’s event will see them cover 4 laps (8km).The usual prize categories apply. Please note the presentation of prizes will take place immediately after the race at the College grounds.

INCORPORATING COUNTY SENIOR,UNDER 18 AND JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS.
This Cross Country race once again this year incorporates the County Senior and Junior cross country championships for men and women.

From West Waterford AC........The famed Ger Wyley Sports/SKINS Summer Series heads into its 22nd year and is the only 11 race summer race programme in the country. From the off West Waterford AC would sincerely like to thank Ger Wyley of Wyley Sports and Footwear Dungarvan for his continued sponsorship of the Series. This year, the 11 race programme run's throughout the summer months from April to August with a diverse programme of events which holds something in it for everyone distance and terrain wise.

RACE ENTRY FEE STAYS AT 5 EURO-"NOW WHERE WOULD YOU GET IT."

A few years ago  the club reduced its race entry fee to 5 euro and the results was increased numbers participating in our events, this year once again indeed for the fourth year in succession we have decided to continue this trend with a 5 euro entry fee for club organised races in the series when you enter online.

This you will agree is brilliant value and is not repeated by any other race series anywhere taking into consideration also that our races are chipped timed with no added cost to you the runner.( where else now would you get that value). Please note if you wait to enter any of the series races until the night of the race you will pay 8 euro for our club organised events, so it basically pays to pre enter for the 5 euro.

The overall prize fund for the series will remain the same as last year and this is achievable with thanks to the generosity of our great sponsors. We will continue with the same prize fund for this year also. As a non-profit making club which has always strived to cater for all levels of participants and promoted itself as having events organised for runners by runners, we know from the feedback that runners appreciated the effort’s being made by our club in this matter and participants from far and near came and supported our events . We're really looking forward to seeing runners of all standards back again this coming summer series. But remember save yourself money and get your online race entry in.

Recent results of races in Waterford...July & August 2015

Just catching up on some recent results. There have been three races in West Waterford over the last few weeks and the one common feature is that the numbers seem to be down on previous years. Perhaps a sign of too many races on the calendar?

Ballymacarbry 5 mile....This 5 mile race was held on Friday the 24th of July with 165 runners turning out. This was down slightly on the 175 of 2014 which was a record year.

Rás na Rinne...This race over roughly 5.5 miles on the Ring Peninsula on Fri 7th Aug had a field of 94 runners. This is down from the 111 of 2014 and is well down on the peak of 177 back in 2009. Looking through the results for races in Waterford over the Summer, it does seem as if the harder ones like Rás na Rinne and the Marine Climb were well down in numbers while the shorter easier ones fared a lot better. Maybe an ongoing trend?

1569 runners took part in this years Dungarvan 10 mile road race in West Waterford. Conditions were nearly perfect....blue skies and sunshine although a bit on the cold side with the temperature not too far above zero.

From West Waterford AC......For the first year this year we donated monies from the race to a charity. SERT. "South East Radiotherapy Trust" was the chosen charity and we were delighted that you the runners through your generous donated €2000 to this most worthy charity who do great work transporting cancer patients and others to and from hospital for treatment .

On behalf of SERT Liz Walsh came along on Sunday and was presented with the cheque by John Treacy on behalf of all the runners who donated to the cause.

Event notice...John Treacy Dungarvan 10 mile road race - Sun 26th Jan 2014

Now as we head towards the end of 2013, it's time to look ahead to the Spring of 2014 and what lies ahead. This is the traditional season for 10 mile road races in Munster and the four big ones are Ballycotton, Dungarvan, Mallow and Cobh.

The first one up is the John Treacy Dungarvan 10 mile road race on Sunday the 26th of January 2014. This is for me one of the best road races in Munster and it attracts runners from all over the country. Please note there is an entry limit of 2,000 this year and it will almost certainly close well before race day. The entry fee is €20 and that includes a Nike dry-fit running top. It really is an excellent top and as good as you'd get in any race. The entries are flying in already so enter asap

At a photo launch recently in the towns Walton Park, John Treacy along with race sponsors and club committee members, details were announced of the 23rd Annual John Treacy Dungarvan 10 Mile Road Race.

The event now in its 23rd year has established itself as a must run race on the Irish road running calendar with participants from all four corners of the country and beyond participating. The race has grown year on year and is a pre-entry race only with the close date January 13th for the January 26th 2014 race or when 2,000 entries is reached .Please note that race entries closed in a matter weeks last year leaving hundreds disappointed on not being able to participate.( please get your entry in immediately )

To stage such a big event of course requires good sponsors and we are fortunate to have the support of the local authorities, Go Dungarvan, GlaxoSmithKline, Dungarvan Shopping Centre, Glanbia, Optimum Nutrition, Tipperary Water, Flahavan’s, Nike Ireland along with many other local businesses and individuals who are all giving valuable support helping to make the day a great occasion for the town of Dungarvan.

Introduced to the event three years ago the John Treacy Club Challenge Cup for men’s and ladies teams is proving to be highly successful. We will again be calling on all the athletic clubs of Ireland to take on the challenge in the 2014 event.

The John Treacy Dungarvan 10 bring’s together the ideal race combination of fun runners, joggers, club athletes and top class internationals who compete over a fast flat 10 mile course around the historic town of Dungarvan as we all look forward to an even bigger and better event on January 26th  next.

Waterford...Open Cross Country Event - Sun 6th Oct 2013

In most cases, cross country races are open only to members of members of athletic clubs. This event in Dungarvan on Sunday the 6th of October is open to everyone who would like to compete.

Details from the organisers of the event...West Waterford AC........21st  ANNUAL WEST WATERFORD AC OPEN CROSS COUNTRY EVENT FOR THE JAMES HUGHES PERPETUAL CUP...The annual Open Cross Country event at St. Augustine’s College has a starting time of 2.00 pm. The race is open to all and caters for all levels of runners from elite runners, club runners, fun runners and joggers. All are more than welcome to come along and have a run on the famed Friary course. The distances on the day will be 2 laps of the College grounds for the ladies which is 4km in total and the men’s event will see them cover 4 laps (8km).The usual prize catagories apply.Please note the presentation of prizes will take place immediately after the race at the College grounds.
INCORPORATING COUNTY SENIOR AND JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
This Cross Country race once again this year incorporates the County Senior and Junior cross country championships for men and women.

JAMES HUGHES PERPETUAL CUP PRESENTED TO WEST WATERFORD ATHLETIC CLUB OPEN CROSS COUNTRY RACE THIS SUNDAY.,,,Donal Power presents James Veale chairman of West Waterford athletic club with the James Hughes perpetual cup for cross country, also pictured are Kevin and Michael Power. James Hughes was their grandfather and was an Irish international cross country athlete. Donal gave a very indebt talk on his grandfather in association with the Waterford Museum Society in the Town hall theatre Dungarvan recently which was attended by members of the Museum society and local athletics enthusiasts. The cup will be awarded each year to the winner of the West Waterford AC open cross country race which is celebrating its 21st year this year. The race goes ahead at St Augustine's College on next Sunday October 6th at 2 pm where we hope to see the countries best cross country runners battle it out to make their own piece of history by being the first name inscribed on this magnificent trophy.Donal and members of the Power family will be along on the day of the race to present the winner with the cup. The event also incorporates the Waterford country senior under 18 and Junior county championship.

Talk in Dungarvan, W Waterford about Irish International Cross-Country runner: James Hughes, 1908 to 1916

Press release...Waterford County Museum presents The life and athletic career of an Irish International Cross-Country runner: James Hughes, 1908 to 1916)...By Donal Power.

Our lecture season kicks off with a local flavour this season .This power point Presentation and talk is delivered by Abbeyside’s, Donal Power and the subject matter is his grandfather; James Hughes. Never heard of him? If we mention ‘Christy’s Shop at Abbeyside. This then is the local connection. The event will deal with his life (1884 – 1961). In this presentation Donal’s talk and illustrations will deal with the formation of early athletic organisations in Ireland; The Olympic Games, 1908 and 1912; running champions and their record times 100 years ago.

It will deal with James Hughes who was Donal’s grandfather, his achievements; fame in England; life as a soldier in World War One ; International sports newspaper reports ; the tragic abrupt end to his athletic career ; his return to Ireland and his life in Abbeyside in the 1950s and 1960s.This most certainly is not a talk to be missed. Anyone who has an interest in Athletics should add the date to their diary. Donal Power is a well known Abbeyside personality, through his music and recordings and fundraising efforts. He is presently residing in Carrigaline with his wife and family.


The talk takes place at the Town theatre on Friary Street on Wednesday September 18th at 8 PM and as always, all are welcome admission €5.
