Clare: Results of the Kilnaboy 6k - Sun 8th Feb 2026

The Kilnaboy 6k was the second race in the Run the Banner series and was held this year on Sunday 8th February 2026. This was a change from the original scheduled date which was for the 15th.

There were 229 finishers this year, up from the 161 in 2025.

Clare : Results of the Kilnaboy 10 mile - Sun 8th Apr 2018

As can be seen from the chart above, the Sonny Murphy Memorial 10 mile road race in Kilnaboy has a long history and the race this year on the 8th of April was its 34th edition.

In the early years, the numbers hovered around the 100 mark until the race got a boost in the late 2000's from being part of the Munster 10 mile Spring Classics Series and the general running boom. With the demise of the series, the numbers fell back until it became part of a popular Clare race series in 2015. It is now no longer a part of that series and the numbers have dropped a lot.

Clare...Results of the Kilnaboy 10 mile road race - Sun 10th Apr 2016

A large crowd of 422 runners turned out for this years Kilnaboy 10 mile road race. As can be seen from the chart below, it's a drop on last years numbers but still a very good turnout for a 10 mile race in Co.Clare.

This is very much in line with the other races in the Run Clare series which were down this year.

One thing that the chart doesn't show is how much the race has changed in the last two years. Prior to 2015, the race attracted a lot more of the faster runners. For example in 2011, 37 out of 195 ran sub 65 mins....about 19%.

In the last two years, it has become more of a mass participation event with larger numbers but with a lot of the faster runners missing. In 2016, just 8 out of 422 runners broke 65 mins....just 2%.

There is nothing right or wrong about this, it is what it is. Larger numbers mean that the host club earns more money which in turn helps fund its activities. As you can see from the chart about, the race has a long history and would have been considered in the past to be one of the serious 10 mile road races in Munster along with Dungarvan, Ballycotton and Mallow. That's no longer the case.

Results of the Munster Novice, Senior & Masters 4 Mile Road Championships...Sun 3rd Apr 2016

The Munster Novice, Senior & Master 4 Mile Road Championships were held last Sunday the 3rd of April 2016 in Kilnaboy, Co. Clare. There was a modest sized turnout with 91 in the mens race and 55 in the womens.

Looking through the results, there was no one from Co.Waterford in either the mens or womens race. Last year, it was held in Killmallock, Co.Limerick and the numbers were larger...113 men and 74 women....perhaps because it was a more central location?

Clare...Results of the Kilnaboy 10 mile road race - Sun 12th Apr 2015

There was a record turn out for this years Kilnaboy 10 mile road race in Co.Clare on Sunday the 12th of April 2015. The chart below shows the story....

The 10 mile race in Kilnaboy has a long history and for the best part of 15 years, the numbers were down around the 100 mark. Around 2005 to 2010, it was part of the Munster Ten-Mile Spring Classics Series and with some advertising, it reached a peak in 2009. After the demise of the series, the numbers fell away and truth be told, the race wasn't really advertised so the numbers dropped back down towards the 100 mark.

With the introduction of the new Run Clare Series in 2015, the race and the series was heavily promoted on Facebook and you can see the new record peak above.

Looking through the results, some of the times seemed pretty slow. For example, the Great Island 10 mile in Cobh was also held on the same day. That race attracted an almost identical number of runners...528...and 74 broke 1h 10m. The Kilnaboy race had a field of 527 and had only 40 faster than 1h 10m. The course for the race in Cobh is certainly not any easier or faster than the Kilnaboy course.

I then checked out the paces in the 2015 Kilnaboy race and compared it to the previous peak in 2009. In 2009, very few runners ran slower than 1h 40m which is 10 minute/mile pace. The 2015 race by contrast had about 220 over 1h 40m...i.e. about 42% of the field.

Gender Breakdown.......In 2009, about 30% of the field were women. Things have changed in the last few years with more and more women running so it's pretty common now in most 10 mile races liek Dungarvan, Mallow and Ballycotton to have about 40% of the field made up of women.

In the 2015 Kilnaboy race, a whopping 63% of the field were women. As women are generally slower than men the times above are reflected in this. The question remains......where were all the men?

The 2009 race had 256 men while the 2015 race had 188.

Looking at the Running in Munster Facebook page, 58% of the followers are women. That is pretty typical for Facebook as more women are using it than men. Maybe it's because the Run Clare series was promoted on Facebook, it has resulted in a lot more women than men entering?

The Clare County 4 mile road championships were held in Kilnaboy on Sunday the 15th of February 2015. The numbers taking part were pretty small with 35 men and just 17 women.

For a race with such a long history, the numbers are disappointing especially when compared to a few years ago. Obviously the demise of the Munster Ten-Mile Spring Classics Series has had a huge impact on numbers but it should still be getting more than it is at present.

Clare...Results of the Kilnaboy 10 mile road race - Sun 14th Apr 2013

The Kilnaboy 10 mile road race took place on Sunday, the 14th of April 2013 and attracted a field of just 107 runners. In comparison to previous years, this is a major drop and hasn't been this low since around 1998.

One obvious factor here of course was the demise of the Munster Ten-Mile Spring Classics Series. The Kilnaboy race was the last one of the four in the series and was a major factor in people traveling here.

Clare...Results of the Kilnaboy 10 mile road race - Sun 8th Apr 2012

A total of 193 runners turned out for the Kilnaboy 10 mile road race on what was a dull overcast day. With this being the final race in the John Buckley Sports Munster Ten-Mile Spring Classics Series, quite a few non-local runners made the trip from Waterford, Cork, Kerry and Tipperary.

The winner of the mens race was Michael Shannon of the host club in a time of 52:36. The winner of the womens race was Angela McCann in 60:16.

The numbers were down a fraction on last years figure of 195. The record for the event was set back in 2009 when 363 runners took part.

Clare...Results of the Kilnaboy 10 - Sun 10 Apr 2011

The Munster 10 Mile Spring Classic Series concluded with the fourth and final race, the Kilnaboy 10.

There were 195 finishers this year, down about 30 on last years. Perhaps the Connemara marathon events on the same day is drawing numbers away ?
However Philip Harty of West Waterford AC put in an excellent time, just one second behind Gerry Ryan of GCH's 2006 result. This is just days after he make a clean-sweep in the Colligan Spring League 2011.
First Lady home was Treacy Roche of Doneen AC, nearly 4 minutes ahead of her 2010 winning result.

All runners received the light gray Kilnaboy 10 cotton tee shirt, and additionally runners who were completing all four races in the Munster spring series received a blue long-sleeved  technical top.

A new community hall is being completed at Kilnaboy, and runners had the honour of being the first event to be staged in this new building. This makes a big difference from everyone cramming into a single classroom for refreshments and prize giving!

No series results have been published yet, but there were 161 runners after the first three races, and it looks like 71 completed all four.

Races in Munster....Sun 10th Apr 2011

There are 2 races in Munster this weekend, both on Sunday the 10th of April.

Limerick....The Limerick AAI Senior Road Championships take place in Rathkeale at 12 noon.

Clare......The Kilnaboy 10 mile road race is the fourth and final race in the Munster Ten-Mile Spring Classics Series. It starts at 2pm and is likely to attract in excess of 300 runners.

The entre fee is €15 and this includes a t-shirt. More details on the race website.

Clare...Results of the Kilnaboy 10 - Sun 11th April 2010

The final race of the Munster spring series took place today.

Conditions were calm and sunny, but a bit hot. A total of 225 people completed this race. All those who completed the series received a special tee-shirt.

Numbers are down quite a bit on last year, but this is probably a result of the calendar clash with CorkBHAA UCC 10k and the Connemarathon.

Runners who had run the previous 3 races in the series had a preassigned bib number reflecting their position in the series.

There was an excellent selection of 2009 photographs on display, which were free to taken away, by those shown in the photos.

It was noticable that the rugged school car-park has now been replaced by a flood light all-weather sports pitch.

It was announced that next years race will again be the second Sunday of April, which will be 10 April 2011 -- two weeks before Easter.
