Notice...Killarney 10 mile road race - Sat 27th Sept 2014
One quick look at the race calendar shows a multitude of races with many being held for many different reasons. This one however is special. The objective of this race is to raise funds for a new athletics track in Killarney.
At the moment, the only athletics track in Kerry is the full size 400m track at the grounds of An RÃocht AC in Castleisland. It's an excellent facility and is used for all the major track & field competitions in Kerry.
It is however a 15 mile trip from Killarney. The distance in itself isn't an issue when it's for the likes of say an occasional competition but driving children there back and forth twice a week is another issue. What is required is a local facility in Killarney that is easy for people in the town and surrounding area to access.
What is proposed is the development of a 200m micro track and a floodlit all weather pitch area which will be situated on grounds leased from the St. Brendan's Trust (St. Brendan's College Killarney).
The track will have 4 lanes and have a tartan surface. While it will be measured correctly...i.e. 200m in lane 1, the track will not be a standard 200m track like say the indoor track in Athlone IT. The gradient from lane 1 to 4 will be much reduced as the track will also be used by athletes with special needs. In terms of training however it is excellent for juveniles and adults.
One special feature will be the straight section that you can see at the top. This is about 120m long and will be properly measured, marked and certified. This will facilitate all sprint events such as say the 100m, womens 100m hurdles and mens 110m hurdles. They also have plans for a long jump area as well as a facilities for pole vault, high jump, shot putt and a throwing cage.
The initiative is being supported by three local clubs as well...Spa Muckross AC, Gneeveguilla AC and Kenmare AC...
One might ask why didn't they opt for a full size 400m track but the amount of land required and the costs involved would be in a completely different league. This new facility will suit the training needs of most of the local athletes be they seniors or juveniles.
As a project, I don't see why it couldn't be replicated elsewhere around the country? It is something a lot of other athletic clubs might consider.
So, back to the race! :o)
It is on Saturday the 27th of September with a 1.30pm start.
The entry fee is €20 plus 1.50 process online.
For that there is the race, a medal, a dry fit top, chip timing and the usual prizes including spots.
The course takes in a loop to the north-west of the town as well as inside the park itself.
More on the course later.
For more info and to enter, go to the race website... http://killarney10mile.com/index.html
From the organisers.....
KILLARNEY'S first micro-athletic running track is poised to become a reality. The facility, which will feature four lanes and an astro-turf football pitch, is to be built in the grounds of St Brendan's College.
A special fundraising 10-mile road race around Killarney town is to take place on Saturday, September 27, and is expected to attract a host of elite athletes.
"People of all abilities, elite and recreational athletes, joggers and walkers are invited," said Jerh Griffin of the organising committee.
Race walking world record holder and Minish native Gillian O'Sullivan will start the race and former world mountain running champion John Linehan will present the medals.
"We are excited at the prospect of this race being an annual event to support the students and the community in this race as they jointly seek to create a mini style university approach to physical education in a sustainable way," added Jerh.

Kilkenny...Results of the Piltown 10k race - Fri 1st Aug 2014
Report from Carrick-On-Suir AC........The Morris Oil Piltown 10k on Friday evening last was the fifth and final race of this year's very successful OutfieldSports.ie Three Counties Challenge. This series, now in its eighth year, includes races from 5k up to 10k in the neighbouring counties of Tipperary, Kilkenny and Waterford.
In perfect running conditions, a field of 177 runners lined up for the race start on the grounds of Kildalton Horticultural College. As the field made its way through the scenic college grounds it was Philip Harty from West Waterford AC who went to the front with a group of four runners in close pursuit. Philip really showed his strength on the long Bog Road stretch and extended his lead to enter the finish area in Piltown GAA Club over a minute ahead and take the victory in a time of 32:11.
Second place went to Noel Murphy (Waterford AC) in 33:18 just ahead of Danny Smith (Ballynonty AC) in 33:28.
The ladies' race saw Siobhan O' Doherty (Borrisokane AC) establish an early lead which she never looked like relinquishing. Siobhan came home in twelfth place overall in a time of 36:17 with Angela McCann (Clonmel AC) and Dymphna Ryan (Dundrum AC) taking second and third places respectively.
The overall series prizes for runners who had completed at least four of the five races went to Noel Murphy (Waterford AC) and Mary Molloy.
Carrick AC would like to thank all who helped in the organisation and running of this year's race. We are especially grateful for the continued generous sponsorship of Morris Oil, Fiddown over the past seven years. Thanks also to Alan Treacy, Outfield Sorts, Carrick-on-Suir for once again sponsoring the series. As always, Carrick-on-Suir Red Cross was on hand to provide medical assistance when needed and we are very grateful to Finola Walsh and her team for their invaluable help. We would also like to thank Kildalton Horticultural College and Piltown GAA Club for the use of their grounds and facilities.

Race report from Clonmel AC.........The Clogheen 5k road race took place last night in ideal conditions which attracted a record entry of 195 athletes.
Right from the start, there was a breakaway group of five athletes...Kevin Moore of Dundrum along with the Clonmel AC quartet of Niall McCormack, Davis Ryan and the Maunsell brothers William and Kevin. The pace was strong and the lead changed a number of times as the athletes reached the first mile in 5 mins 6 secs. Then Kevin Maunsell went to the front and increased the tempo with only Niall McCormack going with him and these two reached two miles in 9 mins 56 secs. At this stages Niall picked up the pace and on the return journey along the Ballylooby road he put in a 4 min 45 secs mile to open a good lead, a lead he held all the way to the line to win in a brilliant time of 15 mins 18 secs, just 18 secs outside the course record held by Gerry Ryan of Galway City Harriers in 2009 and the 5th fastest time ever over this course, brilliant running. Then we had a tussle between the Maunsell brothers as William caught Kevin over the final 1km to finish 2nd in 15 mins 33 secs with Kevin 3rd in 15 mins 46 secs. Then we had Kevin Moore of Dundrum finishing 4th in 16 mins 11 secs with Shane Mullaney of Thurles Crokes 5th Senior man in 16 mins 49 secs.
In the over 40 awards David Ryan (Clonmel) ran very well to win in 16 mins 14 secs when 4th overall with Ger O Loughlin (Clonmel) 2nd in 18 mins 9 secs.
The other winners in the Men’s categories were 1st 0/45 Liam Casey (Clonmel) 18:25 with Willie O Connor (Galtee Runners) 2nd in 18:43, 1st 0/50 John Walsh (Clonmel) 19:03 and 2nd Tommy Moloney (Thurles Crokes) 19:07, 1st 0/55 was Tommy Cahill (Clonmel) 20:29, 1st 0/60 Matt Alexander (Coolquill) 20:36, 1st 0/65 Eddie Cahalan (Coolquill) 23:24and 1st 0/70 Myles McHugh (Clonmel) 25:24.The Junior men’s prize was won by Fionn Browne (Clonmel) 24:48.
The Ladies race was also a very competitive event as Clare Annan (Carrick on Suir) and Madeleine Loughnane (Thurles Crokes) were stride for stride throughout the race and they both came into the village together and then over the final 100m Clare edged in front to win in 18 mins 27 secs with Madeline 2nd in 18 mins 33 secs. Aine Roche (Clonmel) was 3rd in 19:37.
The winners of the ladies categories were as follows: 1st 0/35 Elaine Walley (Ballymacarbry) 22:28 with Mary Morrison (Cahir) 2nd in 24:38, 1st 0/40 Siobhain McHugh (Unattached) 20:04 with Yvonne O Connor (Clonmel) 2nd in 21:42, 1st 0/45 Kathleen O Meara (Thurles Crokes) 24 mins and 1st 0/50 Eileen Hynes (Clonmel) 24:34. Tipperary...Results of the Ballynonty 10 mile road race - Sun 27th July 2014
A nice crowd of 86 runners turned out for this years Ballynonty 10 mile road race, well up from the 44 of last year. As races go, this one is a bit of a gem in that it is a good quality 10 mile race and it only costs €10 to enter.
Conditions for the race were warm with some hazy sunshine present for most of it. This made things a bit difficult but there were plenty of water stations out along the course to make up for it.
These were the top 3 men and women

Reminder...Ballynonty 10 mile in Tipperary on Sunday 27th July 2014
Just a reminder that the Ballynonty 10 mile road race is coming up on Sunday the 27th of July with an 11am start.
The race could probably be best described as a simple back to basics no frills 10 mile road race. No chip timing, no dry fit tops or all of the other stuff. Just a good quality 10 mile road race organised by a small athletics club with fine spread afterwards. The entry fee is €10.
More details in this earlier post.
