Results of the Races in Munster on St. Patrick's Day - 17th March 2010...

(Croom Start Line)

Three races took place today across Munster, probably the warmest racing day so far in 2010.

Cork.........The Rising Sun AC 'Paddy Desmond' 4 Mile took place at 11:00 at Ballinhassig, Co Cork. 189 ran and the results can be seen on the Cork Running blog.

Tipperary.......The 'Ned Kelly' 4 Mile took place at 12:00 at Moyglass, Co Tipperary. There was a small turnout of just 61 runners for this race. The results are now available HERE

Limerick........And finally the 'Joey Hannan' 6km took place at Croom, Co Limerick at 14:00. Numbers may have been down slightly on last year, but running conditions were ideal. All proceeds went to the Croom Church Heating Project and the Croom Peruvian Children's Project.

Races in Munster on St.Patricks Day...17th March 2010

As far as I can tell, there are 3 road races in Munster on Wednesday.

Cork......
Rising Sun AC are holding their annual 4 mile road race in Ballinhassig which is about 8 miles south west of Cork City just off the main Bandon road. This starts at 11am. More info on the Running in Cork website.

Tipperary....
The Ned Kelly 4 mile starts at 12pm in Moyglass, Co.Tipperary. (....info from Shane in comment on this post)

Limerick....
In Limerick, there is a 6.2 km race in Croom which starts at 2pm.
More info from Donal O'Donoghue...

The sixth annual Joey Hannon Memorial 6 km road race takes place in
Croom, over the same course as last year.

This event took place in excellent weather last year, and the forecast
for Wednesday is similar!

Registration is at the local Community Centre.

Walkers set out at 1:30 and runners at 2pm.

The race starts outside, and proceeds downhill, past the AIB, and
turning sharply right onto Main Street.

At the far end of the town, turn right near the Garda Station, and then gradual uphill, passing the Mid-Western Regional Orthopaedic Hospital.

The middle section of the race is over quiet narrow country roads, with slight humps over disused railway bridges.

There is a sharp left at Caherass Nursing Home, which brings you back onto the old main Limerick Road.
While this is a wider section of road, you will encounter road traffic, and probably begin to overtake the walkers, who may be several abreast.

The final few hundred metres will overlap with the start, so remember there's a *steep* hill ahead right at the end.

Refreshments and spot prizes in the Community Centre.

Quiet weekend in Munster.......

Amazingly enough, there don't seem to be any kind of race in Munster this weekend. Every weekend, there seems to be a choice of races and this weekend...none. Feast or famine! ;o)

Of course, the following weekend we have the Ballycotton '10' coming which should attract runners from all corners of Cork, Munster and the Ireland.

More info on this race on the Running in Cork website over the next week

Kerry...Results of the Killarney 5km race - Sat 27th Feb 2010

This was the 4th and final race in the Spring series of 5 km races in Killarney organised by Gneeveguilla AC for the month of February.

Race Report by John Dunphy...
Another fine performance by Ed Murphy of Gneeveguilla AC saw him take the overall title by claiming his third victory in this 5k road race series held in the  Killarney National park. After four very good outings, John Barrett also of Gneeveguilla AC picked up second place overall to cap a very enjoyable series in which John was never above 17 minutes in any of the four races.Niall Collins (No Club) and Billy O'Brien of An Riocht took third and fourth place overall with some excellent performances from both lads throughout this series.

In the Women's section Maureen Harrington of An Riocht AC and Anna Meria Costello of Gneeveguilla AC produced a fine race between the two in which both ladies were at each other's heels from the off. Maureen held on at the finish to win by 3 seconds from the overall series winner Anna Meria Costello. Mary O'Connor of An Riocht took second place in the series with some fine performances through out each race. Geraldine O'Sullivan of Bantry finishing a very creditable third place over all in the series.

After the race the athletes enjoyed some nice refreshments in the Kerry Parents & Friends (Old Monastery), Port Road.where all the category prizes were awarded to each individual in their respective categories.

I would like to congratulate Gneeveguilla AC on putting on this excellent and well organized series and I'm sure all that took part really enjoyed each event. Well done to all at Gneeveguilla AC!!.........

Kerry....Results of the Killarney 5 km Road Race - Sat 20th Feb 2010

This was the 3rd race of the 4 in the Gneeveguilla AC 5k series of races in Killarney for the month of February. A total of 86 runners took part which is about the same as previous races. From what I hear, the weather was kind once again with blue skies and sunshine for the race.

Race Report by John Dunphy...
A good turn out of 86 runners and walkers showed up on a cold but very sunny morning. When conditions are like this, there is no better place than Killarney National Park to hold a 5k road race with such beautiful scenery. The race itself took place on a very flat and fast course with little or no wind and conditions were ideal for some fast times.

In form Ed Murphy of Gneeveguilla AC continued where he left off in last weeks race by securing top spot for the second week in a row with a impressive time of 15.54, knocking 19 seconds off from his winning time in last weeks race. Another man showing some great form at the moment is John Barrett of Gneeveguilla AC beating his previous times in this series of 17.00 and 16.37 mins to take second place today in a time of 16.36. Third man home was ever present Billy O'Brien of An Riocht AC with another fine performance running 17.21 to finish with 13 seconds to spare over Kenneth Barry (no club) in fourth spot.

Anna Meria Costello also of Gneeveguilla AC was first lady home showing some good form in a time of 18.59 and for the second week running taking top spot in the senior female category. Mary O'Connor of An Riocht AC was second lady home with another solid performance in this series after competing in the previous two races.

Thumbs up to Gneeveguilla AC for another terrific and well organized 5k road race in the fabulous Killarney national park.

Races next weekend in Munster...Sat 6th & Sun 7th Feb 2010

There's no getting away from the fact that the main event in Munster is the Mallow 10 mile road race in North Cork on Sunday, the 7th of Feb. This race which is part of the Munster Ten-Mile Spring Classics Series was supposed to take place on the 10th of January but had to be cancelled due to the icy conditions back then. A lot of them are just photos of the back of the crowd but there are a few where you might pick yourself out.
