Waterford...Results of the 'Baldy Man' Beach race - Sun 27th Dec 2009

This must have been one of the few races that actually went ahead and wasn't cancelled over the Christmas period. The race was in Tramore on the Waterford coast and attracted an impressive 261 entries.

Waterford...Results of the Waterford Half-Marathon - Sat 12th 2009

There was a huge turnout for this Half-Marathon in Waterford with well in excess of 900 runners taking part. Going on this, the numbers for the Dungarvan 10 mile at the end of January are likely to hit record numbers.

Tipperary...Results of the 'Deadmans' 5 Mile Road Race - Fri 7th Aug 2009

The final race in this year's Outfield Sports/Asics 3-Counties Challenge was the popular Carraig Hotel Deadman's 5 mile race held in Carrick-on-Suir on August 7th. The series which is organised by Carrick Roadrunners has gone from strength to strength with large fields of athletes lining up for all four races in counties Tipperary, Kilkenny and Waterford. Starting at the historic Ormonde Castle and taking in the famous Sean Kelly Square,this year's race saw a new course record of 24:27 set by the overall series winner, Sergiu Ciobanu from Clonliffe Harriers. In second place was Brian Kirwan (St. Lawrences) in 25:34, while third place went to Carrick-on-Suir's Brian Murphy (26:47).Gowran AC were winners of the men's team prize.
The ladies' race was won by Madeline Loughnane (Thurles Crokes) in 29:04. Second place went to Pauline Lambe (Tullamore Harriers) who also took first prize in the overall series. West Waterford's Corinna Walsh finished third with a time of 30:43 while the team prize went to Clonmel AC. Total Finishers 165

This 4 mile road race took place on Friday, the 12th of June. Race report & Results are provided by Tony Fogarty of Thurles Crokes AC.

Record Entry in Dave Fogarty 4 Mile Race , Thurles.

There was a record entry in the Annual Dave Fogarty 4 Mile Road Racein Thurles on Friday the 12th of June 2009 of 121. Clonliffe Harriersathlete, Sergio Ciobanu, won the Men’s race while Rosemary Ryan of Bilboa AC was first lady home.
Kicking off at bang on 8 bells saw a quick first mile in 4.45 whichsaw 5 athletes Sergio Ciobanu, Shane Mullaney, Christy O’Brien, DwayneFarrell and William Hughes taking up the running. As the pace hottedup towards the second mile, Sergio and Christy pulled a small gap onthe rest of the field with the chasing Shane followed closely by clubathlete William Hughes and Dwayne Farrell. As they pushed on again atthe school house just after the two mile mark, participanta at an open air mass were treated to a great spectacle while giving athletes a rousing reception as they passed. Turning for the main road saw Sergio openup a gap on junior Christy O’Brien with 3rd, 4th and 5th still up forgrabs with Tony Fogarty and Tom Carey in close contention behind. Passing the 3 mile, Sergio opened up a lead of 200m on Christy with Tony Fogarty coming through strong through the field with Shane Mullaney in close contention. Fifth place was still up for grabs with William Hughes, Dwayne Farrell and Tom Carey coming through strongly vying for the spot.

At the turn for the main road Sergio had a strong lead crossing theline with Christy little over 300m behind. Christy O’Brien ran a strong Thurles Crokes squad home in 2nd place in 20.24. Next in was Tony Fogarty 3rd having a flyer on home turf in 20.36 followed closelyby Shane Mullaney who was 4th in 20.44. William Hughes had a good run in 21.16 coming 7th with Vincent Molumby, the first junior home inclose contention in 21.24. Denis Shanahan performed consistently running 21.58.
Madeline Loughnane put in a strong performance coming 3rd in the ladies in 22.56. Declan Doherty 3rd over 35 ran in strongin 24.12 with Billy Phillips close behind in 24.22. Austin Ryan had a good run dipping under 25 minutes in 24.59. Con Corbett kept a coolhead coming 2nd in o/45 in 25.08. Mary & Jim Moloney, the in separable duo kept a strong pace going in 25.52. David Kenneallykeeping the flag flying running 25.54 with Denis Kenny close behind in26.02. Conor Stakelum, Noel McCarthy & Martina Ryan had great runs in26.16, 26.33, 27.00 minutes respectively Michael Dundon had anexcellent run winning the o/60 in 27.17. Serena Moloney ran 27.41leading the junior ladies home with Laura Loughnane 28.25 and her sister Nicola Loughnane having a tremendous performance running in 29.43. Dylan Grant had a super run on home ground running 28.26. Marathon man Bobby Farrell back in action showing them how it’s done running 29.02. Christy Tuohy was 1st over 55 running 29.54. Rebecca Power ran an excellent 4 miler in 31.02 with Marian Hughes in close contentio running 31.15 winning the o/50 category. Eileen Carey had a wonderful race running 31.38. Great to see Tony O'Meara & Jim Cumminsback on the scene running 32.05 & 32.40. Pat Bracken back in actionhaving a good action flying along in 32.41. Margaret Farrell 33.293rd over 50, Martina Kerrane 3rd over 35 33.45, Nuala Dorney 33.57 had terrific runs with Orla Donovan in tracking well in 34.03. Adi Bourke on a flyer ran 34.38 with Claire Lawless her club rival running 34.56. Gary Loughnane a cut above the rest ran 35.44 with Robert Farrell showing mum n dad that he can do it too running 36.46. ElainePhillips the surprise of the night showing running is easy running37.16. Breda O'Brien had a wonderful run in 37.53. Breda Kennedy had a super run in 39.05. Denise Stakelum performing excellently running in 41.39. Great running from all.

It was great to see somany athletes out on the course on the night. 43 senior and junior athletes took to the road around Leugh on Friday night last for whatturned out to be an enthralling spectacle for all those that watchedwith another 78 travelling from far and wide to participate in the main event as well as the walk. It was great to see. Well done to everyone behind the scenes who did trojan work & made this event a huge success on the night.

Waterford...Results of the Clashmore 5 Mile Road Race - Fri 12th June 2009

Waterford...Fri 12th June...Clashmore 5 Mile Road Race

This 5 mile road race takes place in Clashmore, West Waterford on Friday evening, the 12th of June at 8pm. Clashmore is a few kms North of the N25, the main road between Youghal and Dungarvan. Just look out for the signpost for Clashmore/the R671 road.

Race starts at 8 p.m. in the village of Clashmore. Entry fee is €8. Refreshments and presentation of prizes at the Old Still Bar, Clashmore.

Tipperary...Results of the Rathgormack 5 Mile Road Race - Fri 5th June 2009

Auto Power Rathgormack '5'..........The first leg of this year's Outfield Sports/Asics Three Counties Challenge Summer Series attracted a field of 152 runners and over 60 walkers to the village of Rathgormack on June 5th.

This was the 1st in a very popular series of four races organised by the busy Carrick Roadrunners club. The races are held in the counties of Tipperary, Kilkenny and Waterford around the Carrick-on-Suir area where hurling rivalries add to the races' competitive edge! In perfect running conditions Sergiu Ciobanu of Clonliffe Harriers took the men's race in 26:01 from Dwane Farrell (Tinryland) and Shane Mullaney (Thurles Crokes). The ladies' race was won by Pauline Lambe (Tullamore Harriers) in 29:39 with Madeline Loughnane (Thurles Crokes) second and Corinna Walsh (West Waterford) third. With generous prizes for the overall series, runners still have the opportunity to complete the necessary three races.

A crowd of 149 runners turned out for 'Tom Jordan Memorial' 5 mile road race in Portlaw, Waterford on Friday evening, the 29th of May. The full results are now available HERE.

Tipperary...Results of the 'Walls of Fethard' 6km road race - Thurs 28th May 2009

A total of 93 runners turned out for what was the 4th race and final race in the Tipperary Challenge Series. 35 runners completed the full series. The results of the Fethard race are now available HERE.

Waterford...Results of the John Treacy 10 Mile Classic - Sun 17th May 2009

A total of 399 runners turned out for the first running of the John Treacy 10 Mile Classic road race in Villerstown, West Waterford on Sunday, the 17th of May. The rain threatened for a while but held off so that it was more or less dry for the duration of the race.

Course.....It turned out to be a tough enough course although not as bad as I thought it might be. The 1st mile was a slow but steady uphill ascent as predicted. The 2nd mile seemed more or less flat so if it was uphill, it wasn't really noticeable. The 3rd mile was more or less a steady downhill so it was pretty fast. After that, it was reasonably flat until we got near the 8 mile mark and a good steady climb. The last mile was more or less downhill with a fast finish. Overall, tough, a good challenge and I'd guess probably not the fastest of 10 mile courses.

Besides the 'undulations', the route was on nice quiet rural country roads with little or no traffic. And what about the 'Dromana Gate' (shown below). What a dramatic feature to pop out of nowhere during a road race.

Comparing it to the other 10 mile races in Munster, it was on a par with any of them and no doubt will become a popular race on the annual fixtures list.

Room for improvement???......some suggestions...

a) Improve the signposting for the race. I heard that a few people had trouble finding Villierstown as there seems to be a lack of signposts out on the main rain road for it. On the way home, I noticed a 'blue' arrow in the village of Clashmore........was this for the race?? Perhaps it might make more sense to direct the race traffic towards Aglish and then from there, have stewards directing cars towards the car parks?

b) Delay the start of the 5k fun run. Most people are there for the 10 mile race, not the fun run. It seems a bit crazy to have slower runners at the start of the 10 mile race making way for the 5 k runners.

c) Get rid of the generators at the start. Way too much noise, especially if someone is trying to make an announcement. It's not exactly in the middle of nowhere....maybe an extension lead into someones house might make more sense?

d) More sandwiches!!........and more West Waterford ' Taaay ' ;o)

Races in Munster...Sun 17th May 2009

There are 3 events in Munster on Sunday, the 17th of May.

Cork.......The Rising Sun Straight Mile near Ballinhassig to the south-west of the Cork City. See the Running in Cork blog for more information.

Kerry.....There is a charity 10k in Killarney. More details later in another post.

Waterford.......The main event is of course the John Treacy 10 Mile Classic road race in Villierstown, West Waterford. You can enter on the day and the cost is €20.

This is a brand new road race so many people may be wondering what the route will be like.

The map on the race website shows the route below...

In fairness, looking at the Ordnance Survey map of the area, the route is nowhere as hilly as that map would suggest. When you see brown like that on a map, it would suggest that the route is going over a mountain!

I have put the route on MapMyRun and the profile of the route shown below gives a more accurate picture.

The first mile is slightly uphill and that's probably no bad thing. It allows people to get into the race proper and stop them from starting too fast. Once you reach the crest of the hill around 2 miles, it's downhill then with some pretty flat running for a while.

Once you get to around 6.5 miles, the route begins to climb with the only really serious section just before the 8 mile mark. After that, it's more or less downhill into Villierstown.

Overall, it looks like it's going to be a nice route. There are a few drags but hopefully, nothing too serious.

Weather Forecast.......it's looks as if there will be a low pressure system over the country on Sunday. Met Eireann predict....."Sunday will bring further outbreaks of rain, with some locally heavy or thundery downpours. Fresh to strong southeast winds will veer southwest and moderate. "

In other words, it might be dry or we might get soaked! As long as it's not persistent, it should be fine.

Tipperary...Results of the 'Bulmers' 10 km road race - Sun 10th May 2009

This race in Clonmel attracted a crowd of 331 of which 80 or so were walkers.
