Despite the rain, this year's Dromana 5 mile road race attracted a field of 152 runners, an increase of about 12% on last year's figure of 136. This was the 7th race of 10 in the ongoing Ger Wyley Sports/SKINS race series.

Waterford Race notice...Dromana 5 mile road race - Fri 21st June 2013

The 21st Annual Dromana 5 mile road race takes place this coming Friday, June 21st at 8 pm in West Waterford. The race will start in the village of Villierstown and finish in the town of Cappoquin.

The Dungarvan Leader Dromana 5 is organised by West Waterford AC and is the 7th race of 10 in the Ger Wyley Sports/SKINS summer series. This is the last opportunity to enter this race series as entries close on Friday evening in Dromana.

Please note that this is a point to point race. A bus will depart Cappoquin from the GAA club grounds at 7 pm sharp to bring runners to Villierstown where the entries will be taken in the local community hall.

The entry fee is €5. Presentation of prizes is at Danny Flynn's Bar of Cappoquin.
There is a bonus of €100 to anyone breaking the course record...........Course record: Pauline Lambe 29.20 (2010) , John Treacy 23.49 (1999) .

Course....The race starts in the village of Villerstown itself. Initially, the going is easy but soon, the road begins to climb through a wooded section until it reaches the highest point around the 1.5 mile mark. After that, it drops down on the other side and then, it's reasonably flat for most of the way until there is a pull up to the finish line in Cappoquin.

One of the most unusual features of the course is of course Dromana Gate......

Described as follows........"A Hindu Gothic gate dating from around 1830. The gate was originally built from wood and papier mache to greet the owner of the Dromana Estate, Henry Villiers-Stuart and his wife, Theresia Pauline Ott of Vienna, on returning from their honeymoon in 1826. The couple were so enchanted with the gate it was reconstructed in stone in later years.

The gate structure was restored by the Irish Georgian Society in the 1960s and again by the Waterford County Council in 1990. The bridge over the Finisk River was replaced in 1971."

The 5 mile course is also famous for the fact that it was the route used by the Irish Olympic Silver medalist John Treacy in his youth when he used to run from school in Cappoquin to his home in Villierstown. Those early years of training would pay off with an Olympic Silver medal in 1984 by finishing second in the Marathon.

Overall.......A road race in a lovely scenic and quiet part of West Waterford. Nice quiet country roads with plenty of flat fast sections.

Waterford...Results of the Dromana 5 - Fri 25 Jun 2010

Runners passing through the magnificent Dromana Arch and Bridge.

There was a record entry of 208 runners for the 18th Dungarvan Leader Dromana 5 held on Friday night. The full results are now up on the West Waterford AC site. This was the seventh race in the Ger Wyley Sports Summer Series 2010 and also the last chance to enter the series.

A new Ladies course record was set by Pauline Lambe in 29:20.
The men's race was won by Philip Harty, who has just qualified for the Irish team for the European mountain running championships to be held in Bulgaria.
The men's record is still held by John Treacy.

The entry fee was €10, and thisincluded a bus which was provided to transport runners from Cappoquin GAA grounds to the start at Villierstown.
It was a very humid evening, and more than a few flies and midget than usual!

The signposted distance from Villerstown to Cappoquin was 4.75 miles, so the race started out the other side of the town, on the road down to Villierstown Quay.
Although the race was run entirely in daylight hours, we were soon into the the dim light of the tree lined roads of Dromana Woods. It was a bit unusual, to be running, with cars passing from behind with their headlights on. At the far side, there was a good view ahead, which showed the slower runners, how far ahead the elite runners were.
As runners were arriving in Cappoquin, the local festival was taking place, including music, dancing, and boxing exhibitions.

There were some well appreciated refreshments afterwards at The Central Bar, Cappoquin, including a Birthday Cake for the young lady presenting the prizes!

After a very successful 10K race at Bilboa last Friday, the Ballyhoura ACTIVE Summer Series 2010 takes a break now.

Judging by the pictures in the Irish Examiner on Monday it looks like many people enjoyed the MudRun.ie event last Saturday!

As this race starts in Vilierstown and finishes in Cappoquin, you will need to arrange a lift back to collect your car.

Clare........This 10km road race starts in Ennis, Co.Clare at 10am on Saturday, the 27th of June and is one of the biggest race events in the county for the year. This year, they are expecting close to 1,500 entries. Online Registration is now Closed. Registration can still be done at the Clare People office, Mill Road, Ennis which will remain open until 9pm on Friday. Limited registrations will also be accepted at Lees Road on Saturday morning, prior to the run. More information about the route, entry and contact details can be found on their website.

A big crowd of 207 runners turned out for this popular 5 mile road race between Villierstown and Cappoquin in West Waterford.

Waterford...Fri 27th June...Dromana 5 Mile Road Race

The 16th Annual Dromana 5 mile road race takes place this Friday the 27th June At 8 p.m. It starts in Villiarstown, West Waterford and finishes in Cappoquin. There will be a large array of prizes on offer for the race with the 1st 10 men, 1st 3 men’s teams of 4, 1st 5 ladies and 1st ladies team of 4,A 100 Euro bonus will be awarded to the first Man to break the course record of 23.49 (set by John Tracey) and another 100 Euro will be awarded to the first Lady to break the Ladies record of 29.08.The usual spot prizes will also be given out at the presentation to the winners which this year will again be held at the central bar Cappoquin by kind permission of Danny and Nora Flynn, also shower facilities will be available for all here and refreshments will be provided for the runners. Please note a bus will depart from the Cappoquin G.A.A. club grounds at 7.00 sharp on Friday evening to the start line in Villiarstown for any one who might like to leave their car at the finish in Cappoquin.
