Report from West Waterford AC.... We made our annual trip to An Rinn last Friday evening for race 8 in the 2016 Ger Wyley Sports /Skins summer series the Mooney's pub  sponsored  Ras Na Rinne 6 mile race. There was a good turnout of 113 runners on the night which was well up on the number who ran in 2015.

The weather was showery for the race and it was quite windy as the field headed out  to complete the famed An Coinigeár course  The race started at 8.00 and the runners were set on their way by Liam Morrissey the new proprietor of Mooney's Pub and we wish Liam ever success with his new venture. Local race organisers Seamus O'Droma and Gerry Cantwell the clubs road racing coordinator once again had all race day details in order last Friday evening and the event went off brilliantly. 

Our thanks to all who helped on the night and to those who looked after the entries and results and finish area Tony,Ray,Sharon, Shirley and Irene great job lads efficiently done as always. To Liam O’Donnell on van duty, Thanks to our steward's on the course, John Leahy, Conor Norris and Jamie Mills on road management duty.  A sincere thank also goes to Comhairle Phobail na Rinne for providing the use of their hall for taking the entries. 

The race Friday evening was also part of a series of races being organised by Oireachtas  na Gaeilge and we thank Majella and all involved with this series for their input into our race here in An Rinne and for providing the T Shirts for the race also, this was much appreciated by all the runners. To our race sponsors Mooney’s Pub for their generous sponsorship and to Liam Morrissey who was on hand to present the winners with their prizes. Special thanks to those who provided the food for the runners especially to Josie Ui Chuirrin for the beautiful cakes, thanks to the O’ Droma family Seamus, Mary Rose and Darren of An Rinn who presented their family shield to the winner on the night, many thanks to one and all. See you in 2017.

From West Waterford AC........The famed Ger Wyley Sports/SKINS Summer Series heads into its 22nd year and is the only 11 race summer race programme in the country. From the off West Waterford AC would sincerely like to thank Ger Wyley of Wyley Sports and Footwear Dungarvan for his continued sponsorship of the Series. This year, the 11 race programme run's throughout the summer months from April to August with a diverse programme of events which holds something in it for everyone distance and terrain wise.

In thanking Ger we must also sincerely thank SKINS for their huge contribution to our series and especially to David McCarthy, the Irish sales manager for SKINS.

The annual Ger Wyley Sports/SKINS Summer Series in West Waterford gets under way on Friday 8th April with the 3rd Annual M T S Broadband Ballinroad 5k road race. There is an 11 race programme during the summer months, culminating in the GSK 5 mile on Friday August 19th.

RACE ENTRY FEE STAYS AT 5 EURO-"NOW WHERE WOULD YOU GET IT."

A few years ago  the club reduced its race entry fee to 5 euro and the results was increased numbers participating in our events, this year once again indeed for the fourth year in succession we have decided to continue this trend with a 5 euro entry fee for club organised races in the series when you enter online.

This you will agree is brilliant value and is not repeated by any other race series anywhere taking into consideration also that our races are chipped timed with no added cost to you the runner.( where else now would you get that value). Please note if you wait to enter any of the series races until the night of the race you will pay 8 euro for our club organised events, so it basically pays to pre enter for the 5 euro.

The overall prize fund for the series will remain the same as last year and this is achievable with thanks to the generosity of our great sponsors. We will continue with the same prize fund for this year also. As a non-profit making club which has always strived to cater for all levels of participants and promoted itself as having events organised for runners by runners, we know from the feedback that runners appreciated the effort’s being made by our club in this matter and participants from far and near came and supported our events . We're really looking forward to seeing runners of all standards back again this coming summer series. But remember save yourself money and get your online race entry in.

Race notice...Ballymacarbry 5 mile road race, W Waterford - Fri 26th July 2013

The 9th race of 10 in the Ger Wyley Sports/SKINS Summer Series continues on Friday, the 26th of July 2013 with the Ballymacarbry 5 mile road race. Located on the R672 road between Dungarvan and Clonmel, the race which starts at 7:30pm should attract a good crowd.

All roads lead to Ballymacarbry next Friday evening, July 26th for the 9th race in the Ger Wyley Sports/SKINS Summer Series. This race has always proved very popular down through the years and a large crowd is expected Friday night also. We wish to sincerely thank our race sponsor Doocey’s Oriel Bar who have generously sponsored the race once again this year. Starting at 7.30 p.m., the entries will be taken in the local community centre from 6.30 p.m. After the race showers and changing will be available in the community centre and then it’s over to Doocey’s Bar for the refreshments and the prize-giving.  

With only two races left in the series, there are a number of athletes on target to complete all of the ten race programme and will receive an award for this feat courtesy of our sponsors and of course for those runners who complete 5 from the 10 races they will receive a 30 euro voucher for SKINS product at Ger Wyley Sports. Looking through the division tables for the overall series many of the divisions are very close at the moment so the Ballymac race will be a very important race for many to seal their fate on those divisional tables. Race notice...Dungarvan 5 mile road race - Fri 5th July 2013

 The GlaxoSmithKline 5 mile road race is coming up in Dungarvan, West Waterford on Friday evening, the 5th of July 2013 at 8pm. The entry fee for the race is €10 and includes a technical t-shirt for the first 250 registered! As races go, that's exceptional value.

This is also the 8th race of 10 in the Ger Wyley Sports/SKINS Summer Series.

14th Annual Glaxosmithkline 5...This race is now in its 14th year. As always, there is a huge amount of prizes on offer covering all categories. No surprise then that this race usually sees one of the largest entries of the series. Entries will be taken at the Dungarvan United Football club pavillion, Kilrush, Dungarvan.The first 250 entrants will receive a techinical t- shirt. The entry fee is 10 Euro. All proceeds will be donated to The Jack and Jill Foundation. This is a very fast course and one to aim for if you’re planning a P.B.

The easiest way to get to the race HQ is to find the garage on the ring road around the town...

The white houses that you can see above are at the entrance to Kilrush estate. The local soccer club is literally just in about 100 metres.

Course.....this is a very fast 5 mile course. Any hills are very small indeed and you should be able to post a very fast time on this course.

Overall......A well organised race on a fast course. With a tech top for the first 250 to register for just €10, it's exceptional value as short races go. It's likely to attract runners from a wide catchment area. Just get there early.

Waterford Race notice...Dromana 5 mile road race - Fri 21st June 2013

The 21st Annual Dromana 5 mile road race takes place this coming Friday, June 21st at 8 pm in West Waterford. The race will start in the village of Villierstown and finish in the town of Cappoquin.

The Dungarvan Leader Dromana 5 is organised by West Waterford AC and is the 7th race of 10 in the Ger Wyley Sports/SKINS summer series. This is the last opportunity to enter this race series as entries close on Friday evening in Dromana.

Please note that this is a point to point race. A bus will depart Cappoquin from the GAA club grounds at 7 pm sharp to bring runners to Villierstown where the entries will be taken in the local community hall.

The entry fee is €5. Presentation of prizes is at Danny Flynn's Bar of Cappoquin.
There is a bonus of €100 to anyone breaking the course record...........Course record: Pauline Lambe 29.20 (2010) , John Treacy 23.49 (1999) .

Course....The race starts in the village of Villerstown itself. Initially, the going is easy but soon, the road begins to climb through a wooded section until it reaches the highest point around the 1.5 mile mark. After that, it drops down on the other side and then, it's reasonably flat for most of the way until there is a pull up to the finish line in Cappoquin.

One of the most unusual features of the course is of course Dromana Gate......

Described as follows........"A Hindu Gothic gate dating from around 1830. The gate was originally built from wood and papier mache to greet the owner of the Dromana Estate, Henry Villiers-Stuart and his wife, Theresia Pauline Ott of Vienna, on returning from their honeymoon in 1826. The couple were so enchanted with the gate it was reconstructed in stone in later years.

The gate structure was restored by the Irish Georgian Society in the 1960s and again by the Waterford County Council in 1990. The bridge over the Finisk River was replaced in 1971."

The 5 mile course is also famous for the fact that it was the route used by the Irish Olympic Silver medalist John Treacy in his youth when he used to run from school in Cappoquin to his home in Villierstown. Those early years of training would pay off with an Olympic Silver medal in 1984 by finishing second in the Marathon.

Overall.......A road race in a lovely scenic and quiet part of West Waterford. Nice quiet country roads with plenty of flat fast sections.

Race notice...Clashmore 5 mile road race - Fri 14th June 2013

The 12th Annual Old Still bar Clashmore 5 mile road race is coming up on Friday, the 14th of June. This is the 6th race in the Ger Wyley/SKINS Summer Series. The race starts at 8 pm in the village of Clashmore in West Waterford. Entries for the race will be taken at the Old Still Bar in the village and the entry fee is 5 euros.

Directions...Located just off the N25 Cork to Waterford road, Clashmore is ideally placed to attract runners from both counties. Just look for the R671 road which is signposted for Clonmel and Clashmore.

Registration, refreshments and prize-giving will be at the Old Still Bar which is right in the centre of the village.

The 12th Annual Old Still bar Clashmore 5....This is race 6 of the Ger Wyley/SKINS Summer Series. The race starts at 8 pm in the village of Clashmore. Race notice...Rás na Rinne, West Waterford - Fri 24th May 2013

The 4th race in the Ger Wyley Sports/SKINS Summer Series is coming up on Friday, the 24th of May with Rás na Rinne in West Waterford.

Located just south of Dungarvan in West Waterford, the Gaeltacht area of An Rinn (Ring) is the location for the annual Rás na Rinne.

Directions...Just to the south of Dungarvan on the N25 Cork road near the bridge over the River Brickey, look for the turn off east (R674)  for An Rinn. Just after a bad bend, make sure you take the left at the next Y junction. Pretty soon, you'll see the local Garda station...

The start and finish of the race is on this small road at the west side of the station (You can see the Colaiste Na Rinne in the distance). Entries for the race will be taken at Halla Phobail na Rinne which is about 200 metres down the main road on the right.

Race 4 in the Ger Wyley Sports Nike summer series is the 20th Annual Mooney's Pub Ras Na Rinne 6 miler. The race starts on the road at Colaiste Na Rinne and after a mile it goes onto the Cunnigar beach for 4 miles approximately before returning the on the same road to the finish. The race will start at 8 pm and the entry fee is 5 EURO. The winner each year receives the O' Droma Family perpetual shield with prizes in the usual categories. Entries will be taken at Halla Na Rinne and the presentation of prizes will be held in Mooney’s Pub.

A total of 249 runners turned out for the Butlerstown 10k road race near Waterford City, an increase of about 25% on last years figure of 200. This was the 2nd race of 10 in the Ger Wyley Sports/SKINS Summer Series organised by West Waterford AC.

Race notice...Marine Climb 6 mile road race...Dungarvan, Waterford - Fri 12th Apr 2013

The 2013 Ger Wyley Sports Summer Series starts on Friday, the 12th of April with the 21st Annual Marine Climb 6 Mile Road Race. The race starts at 7pm sharp!

Starting in Dungarvan in West Waterford, this race may be of interest to runners in East Cork or South Tipperary as well. It is perhaps a bit unusual in that it is a point to point race rather than a loop. While you normally should have no problem getting a lift back, if you are going with friends then consider leaving a car beforehand at the Marine Bar for the return journey.

Entries for the race will be taken in St. Joseph's primary school, Dungarvan. This is right alongside the church as you drive into the town from the Cork side. Entry fee for the race is 5 euros and is open to all runners over 16 years of age. There is plenty of parking nearby near the start and near the local sports centre. There is an additional €5 fee if you want to enter the overall series.

21st ANNUAL MARINE CLIMB KICK STARTS THE SUMMER SERIES THIS FRIDAY.
Its 21 years ago this Friday when a hand full of runners participated in the very first Marine Climb road race. On that occasion, one Pat Heffernan of Thurles Crokes AC who was a top notch road runner of that era was the first to reach the top and go down in the history books as the first winner of the race. When the idea of the race was vetted, Christy O’Neill of the Marine Bar agreed to sponsor the event and this he has continued to do for all of those 21 years since. The club are greatfull to Christy and Helen and all the race committee at the Marine for all their work and help with the event for all those years and our wish is that we will continue with this association with the Marine for as many more years to come.

21ST YEAR SPECIAL PRIZE....As it's a very special occasion Friday night with it being the 21st year of the event, West Waterford AC through the kind sponsorship of the Martine Bar will give a special prize to not one but two lucky runner’s in the race, A Men’s and a Ladies prize will be awarded so best of luck to all participants.

MARINE CLIMB RACE INFO....Entries for the first race in this year’s Ger Wyley Summer Series will be taken at St. Josephs Primary School from 6 pm and the race will start at 7 pm sharp from the Lookout. The race will of course finish at the Marine Bar, home of our generous sponsor. The race distance is 6 miles. The race categories are: 1st 3 Men, Masters Men over 40,45,50,55 and 1st Male Junior, 1st 3 Women,  Masters over 35,40,45,50, 1st Female Junior, There will also be plenty of spot prizes drawn from amongst all non-prize-winners. Entry to the race is €5 and participants may also pay an extra €5 to enter the summer series overall. A 30 Euro SKINS voucher will be awarded to all runners who complete 5 of the 10-race summer programme. A cash bonus of 100 euro is on offer to the first male (30.20) and female (37.48) to break either course record Friday night.

Waterford...Ger Wyley Sports Summer Road Race Series for 2013

THE 19TH ANNUAL GER WYLEY SPORTS / SKINS SUMMER SERIES 2013.

The 19th annual Ger Wyley Sports/SKINS Summer Series organised by West Waterford athletic club gets under way on Friday, the 12th April with the “Marine Bar” sponsored 19th Annual Marine Climb 6 mile road race. At the Ger Wyley Sports Store in Dungarvan recently, David Ling Skins general manager for Ireland and UK, David McCarthy Skins manager Ireland, Ger Wyley of Ger Wyley Sports and James Veale chairman of West Waterford Athletic Club were present for the launch of the 2013 Ger Wyley Sports/Skins Summer Series.

This sponsorship is a brand new sponsorship for West Waterford AC and one which the club was delighted to secure. On behalf of the club and all the runners who take part in this series, WWAC said that they owe Ger Wyley a great amount of gratitude for his on-going input into the local running scene. At the launch, chairman James Veale said..."This series is the original and still the only 10 race summer series in the country, a fact that we are very proud of here in West Waterford AC".

At the launch Ger Wyley welcomed SKINS onboard as the new co-series sponsors. He also thanked David Ling who traveled from the U K and David McCarthy for their involvement in the road racing series in West Waterford and looked forward to many more years of his involvement with the club now that SKINS are co-sponsors also.

10 RACE PROGRAMME....Again this year, it’s the traditional 10 race programme and West Waterford AC said that they were delighted to announce that they have retained the sponsor for each of the 10 individual races in the series. There are a full programme of races right through the summer months finishing up with the Ardmore 5 on Friday August 09th, where the overall winner for 2013 will be presented with the Micheál O Hogáin memorial Cup.

BEST VALUE SERIES AT 5 EURO ENTRY FEE....This year also, West Waterford AC mindful of the current economical climate have decided that all of the clubs organised events in the series will now have an entry fee of only 5 euro. Whereas the overall prize fund for the series will increase, this is achievable with thanks to the generosity of the sponsors. As a non-profit making club which has always strived to cater for all levels of participants and promoted itself as having events organised for runners by runners, West Waterford AC feel runners will appreciate the effort being made by the club in this matter and participants from far and near will support their efforts by participating in West Waterford AC organised events......"We're really looking forward to seeing runners of all standards and our promise is that everyone will be made welcome."

ATHLETES INFORMATION FOR SUMMER SERIES...
1. You must pay to enter each race - if you would like to join the series, you pay €5 separately.
2. For those that join the series, WWAC keep track of your finishing position in each race that you do and your final score will be your best 5 races. You must do a minimum of 5 races to count in the series.
3. After the final race, prizes will be awarded to the top ten men overall and also to the 20th, 30th, 40th man, every 10th position.
4. In the ladies, prizes will be awarded to the top five women overall and also to the 10th, 15th, 20th finisher, every 5th finisher.
5. A €30 SKINS voucher (redeemable at Ger Wyley Sports Shop) will be awarded to any runner that takes part in any 5 of the 10 races.

CAN YOU COMPLETE FIVE FROM TEN?....West Waterford AC will continue this year with the rewards system where any runner that completes five out of the ten races will once again qualify for a SKINS voucher redeemable at Ger Wyley’s Sports to the value of €30.Previously this voucher was for completing 6 races from 10 and it was to the value of 25 Euro. West Waterford AC said......"This year thanks to our great sponsors, we have reduced this to 5 races from ten and the value increases to 30 Euro, where else would you get it??"

RANKING SYSTEM FOR THIS YEARS SERIES.....The main individual prizes will be the top ten ranked men of any age and the top five ranked women of any age. After that then instead of divisions, there will be prizes for the 30th ranked, 40th, 50th etc in the male category and the 15th, 20th, 25th, 30th etc in the ladies category as well as the top 5 finishers.

Race notice...Ballymacarbry 5 mile road race - Fri 27th July 2012

The 9th race of 10 in the Ger Wyley Sports Summer Series continues on Friday, the 27th of July 2012 with the Ballymacarbry 5 mile road race. Located on the R672 road between Dungarvan and Clonmel, the race which starts at 7:30pm should attract a good crowd.

The Ballymac event is held over a very exciting road and wood mix course. This is always a top class event held in a scenic part of the county. The prize categories include men's, ladies and juniors. Race entries will be taken at the Ballymacarbry Community hall and the entry fee is 8 euros and the presentation of prizes will take place at Doocey’s Bar.  Course Record:  Pauline Lambe Waterford AC 29.48 (2010), William Harty West Waterford AC 25.00 (1996)

Directions........from Dungarvan, take the R672 Clonmel road. From East Cork, branch off N25 at Kinsalebeg, take the R671 road through Clashmore.
From Clonmel, take the R671 south.


Entries taken at the local community hall which is easily the largest building in the village. It's about 250m from the Hall to Dooceys Bar where refreshments are available after the race before the presentation of prizes.

The start line is a few hundred metres out the side road, facing away from Dooceys Bar. You run east along the Nire Valley towards the Comeragh Mountains on a relatively flat road, roughly parallel to the River Nier. About a mile out, you pass a small bridge on the left. At about 2.5 miles, you turn left and go over a small bridge, and through a private garden, and head back west on a forest track in the Knockalisheen Woods. There is a bit of a climb here and then a drop down to the that bridge you passed earlier. Cross the bridge, and rejoin the original road, and run west to the finish line.

The forest track is only a quarter of the race, but it is the hardest part of the course. There may be a view at the high point, but you'll be too busy looking down at where your next foot step will be ;o)

Start and Finish are not quite the same point. Start is a bit east of the finish, but both are on same road.

Race notice...Clashmore 5 mile road race - Fri 25th May 2012

The 11th Annual Old Still bar Clashmore 5 mile road race is coming up on Friday, the 25th of May. This is the fourth race in the Ger Wyley/Nike Sports Summer Series. The race starts at 8 pm in the village of Clashmore in West Waterford. Entries for the race will be taken at the Old Still Bar in the village and the entry fee is 8 euros.

Directions...Located just off the N25 Cork to Waterford road, Clashmore is ideally placed to attract runners from both counties. Just look for the R671 road which is signposted for Clonmel and Clashmore.

Registration, refreshments and prize-giving will be at the Old Still Bar which is right in the centre of the village.

Course...The start point is about 0.7 miles or 1.1 kms from Clashmore. This can be part of your warm-up for the race but allow time for getting there in case you arrive late.

The course can be best described as a long uphill run followed by a long descent. For the first mile, it's reasonably flat as you run back into the village and out the other side. Near the one mile mark, the road forks (see pic below) and this is the start of the loop.

You stay on the R671 road until the roughly the 2.7 mile mark and it's a gradual climb. Then you turn off right and the route gets steeper until you hit the highest part of the course at the crossroads at roughly 3.2 miles.

From that point, the course is a gradual downhill all of the way to the finish line back in Clashmore so it should be a very fast finish.

Race Notice...Waterford to Tramore 7.5 mile road race - Sat 5th May 2012

 The 43rd Annual Waterford to Tramore 7.5 mile road race is coming up on Saturday, 5th May 2012. This is the third race in the Ger Wyley Sports Summer Series. This race begins outside Waterford City Hall in Waterford at 7pm sharp and finishes opposite the Majestic Hotel in Tramore. Note that runners need to organise a lift back to Waterford to collect your car. Changing and shower facilities plus refreshments and prize-giving will take place in the Tramore GAA clubhouse after the race.

Entries......It costs €10 to pre-enter HERE

You can also enter on the night for €12 at the Munster Bar, on the Mall (which is near both the Tower Hotel and only minutes from the start) between 5:45pm and 6:45pm. Those who have pre-entered can collect their number in the Munster Bar at the pre-entered section.

The organisers of the race have asked that all runners register online prior to the race as this will speed up proceedings on the night.

Course.....

 The course basically is inside the hard shoulder of the road from Waterford to Tramore. It's wide enough so that there is plenty of room for traffic to pass. There is a slight pull towards the centre point of the race but nothing serious. Overall, you should expect to set a fast time here.

Travel Options.....

If you cannot organise two car or a lift after the race, you might consider the bus option. Bus Éireann have a regular service between Tramore and Waterford City...
