Results of the Great Limerick Run... Sun 6th May 2018

The 2018 Great Limerick Run was held this year on Sunday the 6th of May and just over 7,000 runners took part across the three events.

 In the full marathon, there were just over 700 finishers and this is pretty much in line with the average number over the last few years.

Half-Marathon Results

 In the 6 mile event, there was over 4,200 finishers which is pretty much the same as last year. As you can see, this halts the previous three year decline. The numbers are still well down on the peak back in 2014 but that was a time when a lot of races in Munster peaked. By and large, numbers for most races in Munster are down a bit since then.

Waterford...Results of the Marine Climb 6 mile race - Fri 3rd July 2015

The annual Marine Climb 6 mile race organised by West Waterford AC was held on Friday the 3rd of July 2015 and 104 runners took part. This was the lowest number ever for this event.

 Back in 2008, this race had 223 finishers so why the drop? It's a well organised race and the entry fee is only €5 so it's not the price.

There probably isn't any one answer but two possible answers might be as follows.

1) Looking at the results for 2008, about 46% of the finishers were members of West Waterford AC. Some of the other clubs prominent in the results were Waterford AC, Carrick Road Runners, St.Senans AC and Clonmel AC. Fast forward to the 104 finishers of 2015 and a lot of the other clubs are now missing with West Waterford AC making up a massive 70% of the field. Perhaps it may be due in part to the sheer volume of races on at the moment? Runners from these other clubs no longer feel the need to travel as they have plenty of races to choose from in their own area. In effect, it means that any race now has a smaller catchment area than it used to have.

2) Some of the races in Waterford seem to be doing well while others had their peaks a few years ago. There seems to be a general pattern...the harder the race then the peak was a few years back. The shorter and easier 5k races seem to be doing a lot better at the moment.

For example, the Butlerstown 10k peaked back in 2009. That race was down to 178 in 2014. By contrast, the Ballinroad 5k and the Touraneena 5k had their peaks in 2015.

It seems as if a lot of runners are now more interested in shorter easier races than was the case a few years back.

There was another huge turn out for this years Great Limerick Run with the following breakdown of numbers.....Marathon - 829, Half-Marathon - 2136 & 6 mile - 5742.

I was acting as one of the pacers in the Half-Marathon and from what I could see, it seemed to have been a pretty well organised event. On the half course, there were plenty of water stations although there was the usual problem of traffic cones on the road which were a trip hazard. Not sure if anything can be done about those without closing the road completely although that may not be an option as traffic has to move as well.

From what I understand, there was some issue with the medals as well as some of the marathon medals were given out to half-marathon runners and these then ran out.

The 2013 Ger Wyley Sports Summer Series starts on Friday, the 12th of April with the 21st Annual Marine Climb 6 Mile Road Race. The race starts at 7pm sharp!

Starting in Dungarvan in West Waterford, this race may be of interest to runners in East Cork or South Tipperary as well. It is perhaps a bit unusual in that it is a point to point race rather than a loop. While you normally should have no problem getting a lift back, if you are going with friends then consider leaving a car beforehand at the Marine Bar for the return journey.

Entries for the race will be taken in St. Joseph's primary school, Dungarvan. This is right alongside the church as you drive into the town from the Cork side. Entry fee for the race is 5 euros and is open to all runners over 16 years of age. There is plenty of parking nearby near the start and near the local sports centre. There is an additional €5 fee if you want to enter the overall series.

21st ANNUAL MARINE CLIMB KICK STARTS THE SUMMER SERIES THIS FRIDAY.
Its 21 years ago this Friday when a hand full of runners participated in the very first Marine Climb road race. On that occasion, one Pat Heffernan of Thurles Crokes AC who was a top notch road runner of that era was the first to reach the top and go down in the history books as the first winner of the race. When the idea of the race was vetted, Christy O’Neill of the Marine Bar agreed to sponsor the event and this he has continued to do for all of those 21 years since. The club are greatfull to Christy and Helen and all the race committee at the Marine for all their work and help with the event for all those years and our wish is that we will continue with this association with the Marine for as many more years to come.

21ST YEAR SPECIAL PRIZE....As it's a very special occasion Friday night with it being the 21st year of the event, West Waterford AC through the kind sponsorship of the Martine Bar will give a special prize to not one but two lucky runner’s in the race, A Men’s and a Ladies prize will be awarded so best of luck to all participants.

MARINE CLIMB RACE INFO....Entries for the first race in this year’s Ger Wyley Summer Series will be taken at St. Josephs Primary School from 6 pm and the race will start at 7 pm sharp from the Lookout. The race will of course finish at the Marine Bar, home of our generous sponsor. The race distance is 6 miles. The race categories are: 1st 3 Men, Masters Men over 40,45,50,55 and 1st Male Junior, 1st 3 Women,  Masters over 35,40,45,50, 1st Female Junior, There will also be plenty of spot prizes drawn from amongst all non-prize-winners. Entry to the race is €5 and participants may also pay an extra €5 to enter the summer series overall. A 30 Euro SKINS voucher will be awarded to all runners who complete 5 of the 10-race summer programme. A cash bonus of 100 euro is on offer to the first male (30.20) and female (37.48) to break either course record Friday night.

The Ger Wyley Sports Summer Series got underway on Friday the 13th of April with the Marine Climb 6 mile road race in Dungarvan, West Waterford. The winner of the mens race was Raivis Zakis of West Waterford AC in a time of 33:31. The womens race was won by Angela McCann of Clonmel AC in 37:50.

This is the first race of the Ger Wyley/Nike summer series. Entries for the race will be taken in St. Joseph's primary school, Dungarvan. This is right alongside the church as you drive into the town from the Cork side. Entry fee for the race is 8 euros and is open to all runners over 16 years of age. There is plenty of parking nearby near the start and near the local sports centre.

The race starts at the waters edge near the band stand at 7.00 pm and the race goes out the Cork road and then left. Up to roughly the 2.8 mile mark, the course is pretty reasonable with plenty of flat and downhill sections. The second half of the course is a different story however. This is where the climbing begins. The road twists and turns as you climb up a consistent gradient before coming back out onto the hard shoulder of the main road around 4.5 miles. Pretty soon, you turn off again onto another country road which brings you to the rear of the Marine Bar which is located on the main road.

This race traditionally see’s a big turnout for the start of the series. While the route may be seen as a challenge, there are no really serious hills so it's suitable for anyone who can do 6 miles comfortably. Prizes for individual Senior and Masters Men's and Women's categories. Prizes also for handicap teams of 5, which will be picked on the night. Waterford...Preview of the Ras Na Rinne 6 - Fri 18 June 2010

Race 6 in the Ger Wyley Sports 2010 Summer Series is the Mooney's Bar Ras Na Rinne 6 Mile on Friday at 8pm.

In 2009, this race attracted 177 runners.

This includes a 4 Mile section on the Coinigéar beach, with 1 mile on roads at the start and finish.

Entry fee €8 at Halla Phobail na Rinne

An Rinn is in the Ring Gaeltacht area of West Waterford, and is about 6 miles off the N25 road on the R674 Dungarvan to Helvick Head road.
(If you did the first race in this series, the Marine Climb 6, you'll have passed through the N25/R674 junction, just before the 'climb' begun)

Teas, sandwiches and presentation of prizes afterwards at Mooneys Bar.

This 6 mile race takes place in Ring just to the south of Dungarvan in West Waterford on Friday evening, the 19th of June at 8pm. From what I understand, part of the route is offroad with some soft sand and seaweed to contend with ;o). Race details from Ger Wyley Sports...

17th ANNUAL MOONEY’S PUB RÁS NA RINNE ON THIS FRIDAY JUNE 19TH.

Roll on Roll on , thats the Ger Wyley sports/Nike summer series for 2009. Our feet have hardly left the ground, after a great race in Clashmore last Friday evening with a record attendance its all systems go and the show roles on to An Rinn for the 17 th Annual Mooney’s Pub sponsored Rás Na Rinne 6 miler this Friday evening June 19th Our sincere thank's once again this year to Mooney's Bar for their kind sponsorship of the race. The race this year is race number 6 in the series and brings us past the half way mark for 2009. The race starts at 8 PM. Changing facilities and race entry will be at Halla Phobail Na Rinne from 7 PM with an entry fee 8 Euro.

The following are the prize categories for the race 1st 3 Senior Men, 1st over 40, 45, 50, 55,and 60, 1st Junior, and 1st Local. 1st 3 Senior ladies, 1st over 35, 40, 45,and 50 and 1st three teams with 5 to score using the handicap system for selecting teams. West Waterford club policy as usual regarding prizes, one prize per athlete. There will also be plenty of spots for non prize winners on the night, and of course the winner will be presented with the O’ Droma family perpetual shield and we thank Mary Rose and Seamús for their ongoing association with this great race. The presentation of prizes will take place in Mooney’s Pub after the race and refreshments will also be served to all.

ONE FOR THE DIARY.....A day to note in the diary is race number 7 in the Ger Wyley Sports/Nike summer series. The Dungarvan Leader Dromana 5 on Friday June 26th at 8 PM. GER WYLEY SPORTS/NIKE SUMMER SERIESEntries for the summer series are flowing in at a steady rate and we would like to remind all athletes that the closing date to enter is Friday, June 26 at the Dromana 5mile road race. Ann Dunford is presently drawing up the league tables and keeping track of each athlete’s finishing position. At the minute, some people may appear at the top of the table but this may be because they have only run one or two races. After the Dromana run, there will only be four races left so in order to get the minimum of 6 races in, people will have to run all the remaining races which will help give a clearer picture of the tables. We will have the league tables on display at Ras na Rinne on Friday night and we ask that all athletes check the tables to make sure that your name is there if you have joined the series. Waterford...Results of the Marine Climb - 17th Apr 2009

A total of 214 runners turned out for this hilly 6 mile course in Dungarvan. For the first 2.5 miles, it's just like a normal road race but then the route changed to a slow but steady climb of about 3 miles. Not a course for fast times but it was still a unique race in it's own way. This was no 5k sprint. It was a good test of stamina and I'm sure it will attract more runners in future.

Friday 17th.....Preview of the 10 km 'Marine Climb' Road Race - Fri 18th Apr 7pm
I did this race several years ago. From what I remember, the sign on and start is right in the middle of the town of Dungarvan itself. The race heads back out out of the town along the main road towards Cork. It then swings off left for Ring. Soon, the 'climb' part starts in the race as you slowly work your way uphill through a series of country roads. I remember when I did it, I was waiting for the turn off back towards the town as we seemed to be constantly running away from Dungarvan. When I got to about 4 miles, I began to have to wonder if we were ever going to make our way back. In fact, you don't!! I had assumed that the 'Marine Climb' was a hilly loop course near the sea. In fact, it's a point to point race and the 'Marine' part refers to the 'Marine Bar' at the top of the hill on the Cork/Dungarvan road where the finish is.
As it turned out, someone very kindly gave me a lift back to Dungarvan but keep it in mind if you doing it. I don't think there are any buses or anything like that. It's up to you to make your own way back to Dungarvan.
With the hills, it's certainly not a course for fast times but most of the race is on quiet country roads.

17th Annual Marine Climb
A 6 mile road race comprising of an A to B course, beginning in the town of Dungarvan and finishing at the Marine Bar, Ring.
Entries taken at St. Joseph's Primary School, close to the Parish church in the town.
Entry fee is €8 and the race is open to all athletes.
The race begins at 7 p.m.
Refreshments and prize-giving in the Marine Bar after the race.

If travelling with a friend or two, it's a good idea to travel in two cars. Before the race, leave one car at the Marine and then travel into town to enter. That way, you will have a car to bring you back to the town. There will be a few cars heading back that direction so you won't be stuck.

A total of 170 runners turned out for this 6 mile road race in the Gaeltacht area of Ring is West Waterford. The 16th Annual 'Mooneys Bar' Rás Na Rinne 6 mile race will be held in Ring, just South of Dungarvan in West Waterford on Friday, the 13th of June. The race starts at 8 PM. Entries at Halla Phobal Na Rinne. Entry fee €8. Changing in Halla Phobal Na Rinne. Teas, sandwiches and presentation of prizes at Mooneys Bar.

The turnoff for Ring / Rinne is a few kms South of Dungarvan.
