Kerry......Gneeveguilla AC are holding the first of their four races in the 5 km series. This will start in Killarney at 11am.

This series is open to all runners, joggers and walkers.
Dates: 26th Feb, 5th, 12th & 19th March.
Race start time: 11am
Distance: 5km
Registration: 10am in Kerry Parents & Friends (Old Monastery), Port Road, Killarney
Entry fee: 5 euro per race
Location: Race takes place within the national park. Similar route to the first race of the Feet First series, but with a different start point.(Starting within the park, at Killarney House)
Requirement: 3 out of the 4 races must be completed to qualify for a prize.
Also perpetual cup for both the winning male (Daniel O'Connell cup) & female (Nora Brosnan cup) of the series.

Directions to the start if you are coming from the Cork side of Killarney...
Coming from Cork, go straight through the first roundabout(at Dalys supervalu), straight through the next roundabout(Tralee rd roundabout), at the next roundabout, take the left for the town centre, which is the second road off this roundabout(straight on at this roundabout is Killorglin), you are now on Port rd. Go straight down this road and just beyond the road to the left and before the traffic lights is Kerry Parents & Friends building.

29th ANNUAL DUNGARVAN BUSINESS CENTRE 10K

The 29th Annual Dungarvan Business Centre 10k The race gets under way at the 11 AM. Dungarvan Sports Centre is our race headquarters for this years race where race entries will be taken from 9.30 AM,Entry fee 8 euro, changing and shower facilities will be provided at the centre too and teas and sandwiches will be available after the race. The prize presentation will also be held in the centre also.This race is the final race in the Michael Roche carpets spring series and the various category winners will be presented with their prizes.

This weekend, there are 2 off road events on the Saturday with a number of runs and races on the Sunday...

Limerick.......The Irish Mountain Running Association are organising a race up to the top of Temple Hill in the Galtee Mountains. Details from IMRA as follows...
This is our first official race for 2011.We have a new course to start a new season,(Combe wood to temple hill )Combe wood is just up a mile from Angelsborough. If you are coming from Mitchelstown you turn off at the Firgrove roundabout for limerick (R513) you keep on this route for about two miles,at the far side of the glen there is a right turn for Angelsborough. When you get to Angelsborough take a sharp right hand turn at the Community centre the Church is on your left and the national school will be on your right when you turn up this road, follow this road for about a mile Combe wood is the only forestry on your left hand side,if you find yourself going  down a very steep hill have passed it by. 
The course starts 200 metres from the barrier on forestry roads we stay on the forest road for 2 and a half miles where you come to sheep pins and a style to the open mountain at this point we leave the forest road and head for the summet the ridge takes you to the right by a rocky outcrop then you keep to the left as you come to the top where the trig point is on top of a rocky pile touch this and it is all down hill from here back the way you came to the point you started at(if the day is foggy this could be tricky) Remember this may be called temple hill but it is a proper Mountain and even though the open mountain section is just over half a mile it is very steep. There will be refreshments afterwards in Angelsborough in the local pub.if you want to pre enter please email me and i will hold your number or if you have raced this year and have a number let me know and all you have to do is turn up on the day with your 10 euro.

Kerry......Wild Rest Run is an off road half Marathon going from Kenmare to Killarney on the old Kenmare Rd. Details below...

Half Marathon Trail Run - Kenmare to Killarney National Park. Race follows 'Old Kenmare Rd' from Kenmare town centre to Muckross House in Killarney. Coach transport included - departs Scotts hotel Killarney 9:00am on race day. Shuttle to Killarney from Muckross post-race . Entertainment provided in Killarney in the evening Prizes Male and Female - 1st €300 running gear +more; 2nd €100 gear+more; 3rd €75 gear + more. Runners will receive a goody bag worth €25 including tshirt, gels/bars etc


Course Details:...First 2.6m are on tar road, from 2.6 to 6m is basically a jeep track on a 'green road' with some rocky/marshy areas but generally 'good running' - from 6m to 6.3m is an old tarmac road, so a good surface. 6.3m to 8.7m is mostly narrow tracks with little room for overtaking as its broken rocky terrain with a section of railway sleepers across a bog - thus, pretty 'technical' at this point - particularly on the descent, for the last mile of this section. From 8.7m to 11m is good running on a gravel track with plenty of room for overtaking, and the last stretch is solid tar up to Muckross House


Note. Only the very start in Kenmare will involve being on National Road - we will cross the 'Ring of Kerry' by use of an underpass at Torc Waterfall.

8TH ANNUAL BAUSCH AND LOMB KILMACTHOMAS 5
Sunday February 20th at 11 AM the 8th Annual Bausch and Lomb sponsored Kilmacthomas 5 mile road race will take place. All Proceeds from the race again this year will be donated to a worthy cause.Held over the fast Kilmac 5 mile course.The event is also race number three in this years Michael Roche Carpets spring series of road races.Entries will be taken at the community hall Kilmacthomas at the top of the town from 9.30 am, with the entry fee 8 Euro.Shower facilities will also be available in this hall after the event for both Men and Women. With the help of the very generous sponsorship very kindly given by Bausch and Lomb a very attractive prize fund will be on offer for the top competitors and plenty of spots for down the field finishers.


The categories are as follows:

Races in Munster this weekend...Sat 12th & Sun 13th Feb 2011

This is a busy weekend for races in Munster and there is no shortage of events to attend.

Sat 12th Feb 2011...

Waterford.........The Annevalley 5 mile road race will take place in Dunhill in Waterford. More info from the race website. The race starts at 12 noon. There will be registration on the morning of the race up to 11.30am in Harneys Bar. For all the people that have registered online, you can pick up your number from Harney's Bar on the morning of the race (Saturday 12th) anytime from 9am to 11.30am.

Clare...........The final race in the Frost Bite Series finishes with a 5 km road race in Ennis. Entry is €5. The start is on Lee's Road at 10:30am.

Cork........There are 2 races in Cork on Sunday. A 10 mile road race near Bantry and a Cork BHAA Cross Country race in Blackrock in Cork City. More details on the Running in Cork website.

Wexford....For those in the east of the province, there is a 10 km road race in Enniscorthy, Co.Wexford which might be of interest. The race starts at 12 noon and there is limited entries for €20 on the day up to 10:30am. More info...

The Lapping of the Lakes 10K run or walk through Killarney National Park takes place at 2pm on Saturday February 5th. Registration from 12 noon at Kerry Parent’s & Friends. Entry €20. All proceeds to the Kerry Stars Special Olympic club. AA permit has been granted.

Kerry Parents & Friends is located at the Old Monastery on Port Road...

If the weather co-operates, this should be a stunning location for a race as it goes through the National Park with the mountains of Kerry as a backdrop.


Note that the registration and the race is on the Western side of the town of Killarney. If you are coming from Cork, the quickest route is probably to take the Northern bypass as if you were heading for Killorglin but turn in towards the town at the last roundabout. Look for the church spire and you can't go wrong.
 
Kerry...Sun 6th Feb 2011
This race/run is off-road and is being organised by Munster IMRA. Details below...
The gathering place for the race will be O Riadas Bar and Restaurant which is on the right hand side about 4 miles out of Castleisland on the Tralee road at grid ref Q94290-12042, for people coming from the Abbeyfeale side they will no longer go through Castleisland but will take the by pass for Tralee, this will bring them onto a roundabout about half a mile on the Tralee side of Castleisland and from there to O Riadas is approx 3 miles, from O Riadas to the junction where the race will start is about .8 of a mile so a nice warm up, the run to O Riadas from the finish is approx 1.5 mile but all downhill on road,

At the start of the race there will be 1 mile of tar road and then half a mile of forest road and after that it will be a lot of narrow winding trail so a good position will be important at the end of the road as passing will be difficult but by no means impossible in a large section of the course after this.

The distance of Sundays run is just under 5 miles but due to the steepness of the terrain peoples times will be closer to their 10k times. We will use the new trail which we are building here in Ballymacelligott as a venue for a trail race/ fun run/walk. The entry will be 10 euros for the runners and 6 euros for those who want to do the walk event. Hot food will be served at O'Riadas resturaunt afterwards and this is costing the organizers 6 euro per person thus the 6 euro entry fee for walkers.

The event starts at 1 o clock and the start is about a 10 minute walk from the registration area.

There was a small turnout of 49 runners for this 5 km road race in S.Tipperary. I presume the race in Dungarvan would have taken a good few runners from this event?

Waterford...Results of the Dungarvan 10 - Sun 30 Jan 2011

More than 1000 people turned out for the Dungarvan 10, in bright and sunny, but rather cold conditions. This represents an increase of 63 over the 2010 finishers.


RESULTS.....The results are now online on the West Waterford AC site.

Chip timing was used for fast and accurate results. If you did not return your chip at finish line, or were unable to run today, please make arrangements to return your bib/chip.

The next race in the John Buckley Sport Munster Spring Series will be the Ballycotton 10 on Sunday 6th march at 1.30pm (entries are now closed)

Bantry AC are holding the 2nd Mealagh Valley 10 Mile race on Sunday 13 Feb 2011.

PRESS RELEASE...
MENS AND WOMENS COURSE RECORDS SMASHED AT QUANTUM LIFE DUNGARVAN 10.

The 20th Annual Quantum life Dungarvan 10 mile hosted by West Waterford Athletic Club saw a record turn out of 1050 finishers in today’s race. Held in cold but dry conditions, the race was got under way by Villierstowns favourite son John Treacy who also completed the course himself. Conditions were ideal and the proof of this came in the way of both course records falling.

In the Men’s race, victory went to Latvian Mareks Floroseks in a time of 49.26. Indeed, the second finisher was also inside that old record when Clonliffe Harriers Sergiu Ciobanu clocked 49.49, third was Sandis Bralitis of West Waterford AC who previously held the course record of 50.08. His time today was 51.15.

In the Ladies race it was gun to tape victory for Siobhan O’ Doherty of Borrisokane AC with a splendid time of 56.28. She finished 22nd overall in the race. Angela McCann of  Clonmel AC broke the 60 minute mark for the very first time with a splendid 59.50 to finish 2nd and Kilmore AC's Jackie Cart was 3rd in 61.33.

JOHN TREACY CLUB CHALLENGE.
SUCCESS FOR WEST WATERFORD AC MEN AND WATERFORD AC LADIES.

In the inaugural John Treacy club challenge which was held in conjunction with the Quantum Life Dungarvan 10, we saw a great battle for the team challenge cups with all runners counting. It was based on the accumulative score of the top 3 runners in each team.

In the Men’s race West Waterford took the team win with Sandis Bralitis, Philip Harty and Raivis Zakis in a time of 2.38.19 from St.Finbarrs AC with 2.45.44 sec and Armagh AC 3rd in 2.49.28.

CORRECTION : In the Ladies team event, it was a much closer affair with victory going to Eagle AC with 3:17:18. In second place were Waterford AC with 3.21 .21 and St Finbarrs AC  were 3rd with 3.22.56.

Olympic Silver Medalist John Treacy was on hand to present the winners with the perpetual cups and beautiful crystal mementos for each team member.

Preview of the Dungarvan 10 mile course

Update : Sun 9:30am.....Current temp -3 deg C....v little wind...clear

The Dungarvan 10 mile road race has a reputation of being a fast course. If your target is trying out for a PB then this is the one to run. The route takes in a small loop through the town before leaving Dungarvan to take in a bigger loop in the countryside.

The start point is approximately 1 km from the Sports Centre. The road here is very wide and there is plenty of space. Please note that your time starts with the gun. Even with 1000+ runners taking part, there is no major delay in everyone starting at more or less the same time.

As you can see from the image below, the road rises just after the start. Coming at the start of the race, it's a lot easier than later when you're tired.

After an initial steep section, the going gets easier as you begin the loop around the town. As you can see from the image below, you keep running straight.....take in a short loop.....and then run downhill and re-join the main road and turn right.

You then run back down towards the start line....passing the 1 mile mark....and then on towards the roundabout at the entrance to the town, you take a left and out the main road to the south....

The coure here is now very fast. You will be running inside the hard shoulder and the road up to the 2 mile mark is flat before becoming a gradual downhill......until it's time to turn off right...

Now you are onto a quiet narrow country road and the road rises again gently...



Eventually, the road widens as it approaches the town and an industrial area. The road here is pretty fast and flat. Not long after the 3 mile mark, you rejoin the main road...

However, you're only on this short section of main road for about 100 metres. Then it's straight through the roundabout and take the 2nd left...

.....and then it's onto a reasonly flat road as you leave the town...

The next mile or so is reasonably flat. There are a few very small drags but certainly nothing worth noting.

Just after the 5 mile mark, you reach the most westerly point as the course takes a sharp left. As you approach the corner, you will see other faster runners at the other side of the field...

This section is narrow but dead flat until you turn right at the next junction...

Just around the corner, you soon pass the 6 mile mark. This is followed by a gentle uphill section.....

Nothing too serious but coming at 6 miles, it can have an impact. Eventually, the road flattens out and this is followed by a steep downhill section...

At the end of the hill, you cross a small bridge over the River Brickey and take a sharp left...

The road now follows the river so it's dead flat............(well, slightly downhill but nothing that you would notice ;o)

It's like this for about 1.3 miles as you pass the 7 and 8 mile mark along the way. At around 8.2 miles, you rejoin the main N25 and you run inside the hard shoulder as you head back towards Dungarvan. Initially the road is flat but soon begins to climb. It nevers gets too serious but coming at 8.3 miles, it can have a huge impact if you are tired. This is arguably the hardest part of the course.

Soon, you pass the 9 mile mark and you are now back on familar ground as you are on the same section of road that you were running on earlier. The road begins to flatten out and it stays like this until you reach the roundabout at the entrance to the town. At this stage, you are getting very close to the finish....

Just after the roundabout, you'll see the sign for the turn off to the left...

Once you turn left, it's only a short run of about 100 metres to the finish.

At the finish line, there will be a timing mat which will record your time as you cross it.

Quick look ahead to the Dungarvan 10.....Sun 30th Jan 2010

The big race in Munster next weekend is of course the Dungarvan 10 mile in Waterford. The organisers have got around 1,300 entries for this race and it is now closed. There will be no entries taken on the day.

Only a few years ago, this race only attracted a few hundred runners. The organisers, West Waterford AC have built on it year after year until it is now one of the main 10 mile road races in the country. This of course didn't happen by accident. They put on a well organised event every year and this is reflected in the fact that people keep going back.

At this stage, all entrants should have received their race packs by post. The main item in this is the race number which also contains a timing chip. This should be worn on the front of your singlet.

Location...
What I am going to concentrate on here are additional details that may not be so obvious on the race website.

You should be able to click on the map above to get a larger image. This is to give you some idea of where the start point, the finish point and the sport hall are located.

Directions...if you are coming from the Cork direction on the main N25 road, you will need to turn right at the first roundabout at the entrance to the town. As you drive through Dungarvan, you will see a church on the right.....

Take the right just after the church and the Sports Centre is just down this road.

Please note that unless you arrive early, parking in this area may be full. There are plenty of other areas to park in the town.

Waterford...Results of the Colligan Cup....Sun 23rd Jan 2011

This race in Colligan Wood in West Waterford attracted 122 runners. The winner of this race was based on who predicted their finish time.

Tipperary - Results of the Senior Cross Country Championships...Sun 23rd Jan 2011

Results from the Tipperary AAI County Senior Cross Country

The Womens Race.....Dymphna Ryan (Dundrum AC) won with Angela McCann (Clonmel AC) a close 2nd and Catherine Kelly (Dundrum) 3rd, The team event was really close. Both Dundrum and Clonmel were level on 13 points each. On count back to the 4th woman home Clonmel were declared the winners, 3rd Team went to Templemore AC.

In the Mens race it was another close affair with Mark Gleeson (Nenagh AC) in front for most of the race until the last 600m where Tony Fogarty(Thurles Croke AC) made his move and defended his title. But it wasn't enough for Thurles to win the Team event as Nenagh had 4 athletes in the Top 10 and were worthy winners in the end. 2nd Team were Dundrum with Ballynonty 3rd with Thurles Croke 4th team.

Almost 700 runners turned out for this Half-Marathon in what were wet and windy conditions.

For those entered the WAC half Marathon on 15th January number collection is available upstairs at the RSC on the following dates;

Friday Jan 14th from 18:30 to 20:30 & Saturday Jan 15th from 9:00 to 11:15…..Race day
Goody bag will be presented immediately after the race as athletes hand back in their race number.
Shower facilities are available at the RSC on the day as well as 800 carpark spaces
There will be 3 water stations on the course
As well as water and bananas at race finish refreshments will be available immediately after the race upstairs at the RSC.
The prize giving will be trackside at 3pm.
Entries will be accepted on the day until 11:15am.....(€30)
Race starts at 12 noon.
 

The course....Essentially, the race starts in Waterford City near the Regional Sports Centre and then takes in a small loop in the town. You then head south in the hard shoulder on the Waterford to Tramore road. As you approach Tramore, you turn off left into the countryside, re-appear near Tramore and then head back to Waterford on the same main road but on the opposite side. The finish is on the track of the Regional Sports Centre. There are no major hills on the route but there are a few small drags. The course could be considered reasonably fast.
 

Weather....Basically.....windy, wet & mild! The temperature is expected to be around 11 deg C so it won't be cold. The day is expected to be wet but it's hard to say whether during the race what it will be like? It's might be a light mist or it might be a downpour. It will certainly be very windy. The 1st half of the race will be directing into the wind while the wind will be behind the runners for the 2nd half.
 
Overall.....It's probably not the nicest of routes in that you spend a lot of time running inside a hard shoulder but it certainly isn't the worst. It is essentially a half-marathon organised by club runners for club runners and this is evident by the level of organisation on the day.

QUANTUM LIFE DUNGARVAN 10...
The race as well as being the second race in the Michael Roche carpets spring series is also race number two in the John Buckley Sports sponsored Munster 10 mile classic series. All finishers of the Quantum Life Dungarvan 10 will receive the now famous West Waterford AC goody bag, plus a Nike dry fit running top will be awarded to all finishers, shower facilities will be available at the Dungarvan sports center at back of St. Marys Parish church in the town centre, Presentation of prizes will take place at the sports centre where teas and sandwiches will also be provided. The course used for this race is now regarded as one of the fastest10-mile courses in the country. If it's your first attempt at a 10 miler or if personal best's are your goal this race is the one for you, over a fast course at the classic 10-mile distance.
