Tipperary...Results of the Clonmel 6k race - Wed 2nd Apr 2014

This was the first race of four in the Clonmel 6k inter firm road race series sponsored by Morrison BMW of Cahir. A huge record crowd of 354 turned out for the race, a jump of 16% on the 304 that turned out for the first race in the series last year.

Report from Clonmel AC...The Morrison BMW Cahir sponsored 6k road series got off to a fantastic start tonight (Wednesday) with a record entry of 354 athletes representing 79 teams, another record, absolutely brilliant and thanks to all the team Captains for all their help. Thanks also to the Gardai and the Civil Defence as well as our many stewards who ensured that the whole event was a brilliant success, even the weather was in our favour. Well done to Declan Curley (Boston Scientific) who was 1st in 20 mins 55 secs, Jimmy Boland (Pulse Logistics0 2nd in 20 mins 58 secs an d3rd John Shanahan (Templetouhy Farm Machinery) 3rd in 20 mins 59 secs.
In the team competition we have 6 Divisions this year, such is the interest. For many athletes tonight was their first run over this route and so it was hard for them to accurately predict their time. Taking this into account we have brought in a Default System just for tonight's results. In Division One the default is that all the teams regardless of what they scored tonight they are within 30 points of the Leaders, in Division Two it is also a default of within 30 points of the leaders. In Division Three and Four it is a default of within 40 points of the Leaders. In Division Five and Six it is a default of within 50 points of the Leaders. This format gives every team a chance of success.
As regards the way we drew up the Divisions, Divisions One and Two are teams that have some experienced athletes in them. Division Three and Four are for teams that have a mixture of experience and newcomers while Division Five and Six are for Newcomers.
We would also like to thank the South Tipperary VEC for the use of their fine facilities as Race Headquarters for this series of races.

Races in Munster - Fri 17th to Sun 19th Apr 2009

This is a very busy weekend for road races in Munster with no less than 7 events planned.

Fri 17th.....

There is the 6 mile Marine Climb in Dungarvan, West Waterford. This was previewed in the previous post.

Sat 18th...

Clare - The Healthy Heart 10 km Fun Run starts at 12 noon in Kilmaley, Co.Clare. This small village is located about 10kms west of Ennis. The best way to get there is probably to take the Ennis bypass and look for the R474 to Milltown Malbay. About 10kms out the road, look for a turn off left for the vilage of Kilmaley. Kerry - The Jack & Jill 10 km charity fun run starts at 3pm in Kenmare, Co. Kerry. This is a hilly 10 km course taking in part of the old Kenmare to Killarney road at the start. More details can be found on this website.

Sun 19th...

Wexford - There is a half-marathon in Wexford town starting at 8:30am. This event however is sold out and is now closed. More details HERE.

Tipperary - The Tipperary AAI Senior Road Championships start at 12 noon in Two Mile Borris which is just to the east of Thurles. Some details HERE.

Kilkenny - The Every Woman 4 Mile road race takes place in Kilkenny with a 12 noon start. Runners can enter on the day up to 11am. More details HERE.

Cork - There is a mountain race up Claragh mountain near Millstreet starting at 7pm. Needless to say, it's off road but offers a different experience to the usual road race. If you don't have the proper shoes, an old pair of runners would do fine. More details HERE.

Road races in Munster...Sun 5th of April 2009

There are no less than 4 races coming up in Munster next Sunday, the 5th of April.

Tipperary.........In Ballyneale near Carrick-on-Suir, s.Tipperary, the Tipperary AAI are holding their Intermediate Road Championships at 1pm. Any Tipp club athletes interested in running should contact their club secretary.

Waterford..........In Tramore, Waterford, there is the Splashworld 10k race in aid of The Order of Malta at 12:30pm. For more information, contact Seamus Doyle at 087-7864013

Cork...........In Cork City, there is the Cork BHAA 'UCC' 10 km road race on the Lee Road / Straight Road circuit. For more information, see the Running in Cork website.

Clare..........On the west coast of Clare, the 'Michael Egan Memorial' 4 Mile Road Race starts at 1:30pm. This race is in Quilty which is to the south-west of Miltown Malbay and to the west of Ennis. For a race flyer, click HERE.

Closing date for Munster Masters Road Races...

The Munster Masters Road Races will be held in Beaufort, Co.Kerry on Sunday 22nd March. Distances are 4 miles for men starting at 1pm and 2 miles for women at 1.45pm. These races are open to all athletic club members aged 35 and over. The closing date for entries is next Friday, the 14th of March. If you are interested, you should contact your club secretary asap.

Waterford...Results of the AnneValley 5 Mile Challenge - Sat 14th Feb 2009

There was a big turnout for this race with 240 runners taking part. It sounds like there might have been the odd hill or two along the course ;o)

AnneValley 5 Mile Challenge 2009
It was another trip to Dungarvan today, and on further along the Copper Coast, and then inland to Anne Valley and Dunhill village. Despite any impressions the name may give, this is a regular road race, run in a nice scenic rural setting, where things are so quiet, there's no O2 mobile signal! Online registration had been possible for this race, but by the time I had made up my mind on Friday, online entries had closed. Entry on the day was EUR 10.00 at Harney's Bar, Dunhill, followed by a half-mile trek from there to the start line.
Conditions were dry and mild at 7-9 degrees, with almost no wind. Much more comfortable than the Dungarvan 10 ;o) One could however see snow on the distant mountains.
Total entries were about 250, which included runners, a children’s section, and a walking category.
In most competitive short races, there usually seems to be a ratio of 2:1 in men vs. women. Today, it seemed that there were possibly equal proportions. People were asked to arrange themselves, in order, Elite, Runners, Children, and finally Walkers. However, many kids made a dash towards the front, as soon as the race began, possibly burning precious energy. At least one finished to a big cheer in close to 50 minutes.
Right from the beginning about 10 elite runners separated from the pack, and pulled ahead.
The course was initially down-hill, along the west side of the Anne Valley. At about 1.75 miles, you could see the leaders at the far side of the valley almost a mile ahead. When I myself had reached that spot, I could see that there were still people heading south at the far side. After passing the top of the next hill, we got one more glimpse of them before they disappeared again. We passed below the ruined Dunhill Castle, now shrouded in Ivy. The last mile and a bit overlapped with the first mile, so this meant an uphill struggle. However the final stretch to the finish was downhill again. The roads were rather narrow in places, and even some grass growing down the middle. Mile markers at every mile, and large overhead "Start" and "Finish" banners.
There was a water station at the half-way mark, at which they were also giving out cut Oranges. However I decided the orange slices could be a bit tricky on the move. There were plenty of Road Marshalls in yellow jackets at all the important road junctions. Only one car incursion onto the course, by a careful driver, on a decent wide section of road. There was also an ambulance on duty.
At the finish, everyone received a bottle of Kilkenny Spring Water, and a banana.
The winner was Raivis Zakis, West Waterford AC on 25:42, and the Ladies winner was Corinna Walsh, West Waterford AC on 31:16.
Many clubs were represented, including 45 from Waterford AC, 12 from West Waterford AC, 10 from Carrick-on-Suir AC, and 12 from the local Dunhill GAA. There was even one runner from as far away as Letterkenny AC. However the results are listed without Gender / Age categories. Being St. Valentine's Day, there was a prize for the "First Couple" too.
All proceeds from this year’s race will go to the South Eastern Cancer Foundation, to help fund the SOLAS Centre, which will become the new cancer support centre in the south east, for cancer patients and their families. There was also a list on display, showing the many sponsors.
The next race in the Waterford area is the 6th Annual Bausch & Lomb Kilmacthomas 5, Race number 3 in the Michael Roche Carpets Spring Series, at 11am Sunday, February 22, 2009.
There was just one race flyer circulating at the end, the pink "Every Woman 4 Mile, Kilkenny, 19th April". And surprise, surprise, they were only giving these out to...women!........Donal O'Donoghue

Waterford...AnneValley 5 Mile Challenge - Sat 14th Feb 2009

This 5 mile race takes place in Dunhill which is a few kms west of Tramore on the Waterford coast. Here is some info from the race website...
The third AnneValley 5 Mile Challenge, will take in Dunhill on Feb 14th, 2009. All proceeds from this years race will go to the South Eastern Cancer Foundation, to help fund the SOLAS Centre, which will become the new cancer support centre in the south east, for cancer patients and their families.

Results of the Dungarvan 10 Mile Road Race - Sun 1st Feb 2009

The weather was more or less exactly what was predicted.......cold with a bitter Easterly breeze. Not so bad once the race got started but it was really felt once you turned that sharp corner out around the 5.5 mile mark and you were more or less running into it until near the finish.

First of all, before I say anything about photos and results, I really have to compliment West Waterford AC on putting on a great race today. Changing the race venue from the Crystal Sports Centre to the Dungarvan Sports Centre was a great success. There was loads of parking outside, plenty of space in the hall and you could see the result. As soon as you entered the hall, you could see where everything was. Loads of room for entries, the goodie bag/t-shirt distribution was vastly better than last year and those young girls at the desks there did a fantastic job.
Same story after the race with the refreshments.......plenty on offer and well organised.

As for the course changes, I thought they were for the better. The start was on a road that was very wide and even though there were 800+ people there, it somehow felt less. There seemed to be plenty of room for you to get going. As for the finish, again, I thought it was a huge improvement. Last year, people that had finished the race had to cross the path of others who were finishing and frankly, it was dangerous. With the new finish this year, everything was cordoned off..........a huge improvement.

Perhaps other runners experience might be different but I'd find it hard to suggest how they could improve this race (......except maybe put up a big hedge to block the wind ;o). If you want to comment on the race, use the Comment link below.

Waterford...Preview of the Dungarvan 10 Mile Road Race - Sun 1st Feb 2009 (1pm)

It is important to note that there are some major changes for the race this year. While the 10 mile course is essentially the same, the start and finish lines have been moved. In addition, they have a new race centre this year. In previous years, they used the Crystal Sports centre on the Western side of the town. This year, they will be using the Dungarvan Sports Centre which is behind St.Mary's parish church. See map below.


Parking.......They will be diverting all traffic "from all directions" in a one way from the N25 at the Youghal roundabout on Cork road and it will be very well sign posted from there to the Dungarvan Sports Centre. There will be limited parking there and they will also use other car parks around the town which will be signposted on the day. On the point of parking, you might also consider trying to car pool on the day. The fewer cars that turn up, the better.


Entries........If you have pre-entered for this race, you should receive a letter (Tues-Thurs) with your race number and a timing chip for your shoe. You should collect your goody bag and race shirt before the race at the Sports Centre. If you are entering on the day, the cost is €20. Please note that while the race starts at 1pm, they will stop taking entries at 12:15pm.


Race Headquarters.........Everything is at the Dungarvan Sports Centre. They will have the mens changing in the main centre. The Ladies changing is the boxing club which is part of the same sports centre building. They will have a Help Desk at the centre if you have any questions.

'Taay' and sandwiches after the race will be served at the sports centre hall where the presentation of prizes will also be held.


Course.........The start is very close to the sports centre. The start consists of a short loop before you head out West again towards the bypass. At around the 2 mile mark near the garage, you will be back on more familiar ground as you pass the old starting point near the Crystal Sports Centre. At the next roundabout, you turn off left onto quieter roads. This is the start of a short loop until you come back to a main road again at 3 miles. Not long after this you come to the 1st of 3 water stations which are marked as 'W' on the map above. Another few hundred metres and you start on what is the nicest part of the course. The next few miles are on nice quiet country roads and there is some great running here. At around the 5.4 mile mark, you take a sharp turn left and it's a good spot to check out who is ahead of and behind you. Right at the junction at 6 miles and at around 6.5 miles, there is the only real significant downhill section of the course. At the end of the hill, you turn left and then, it's pretty flat for the next 1.5 miles until you rejoin the main Cork-Waterford road at about 8.25 miles. Even though it's a busy road, the hard shoulder is pretty wide. There is a bit of uphill running here but it's very gradual and nothing serious.


As you get close to the finish, you will approach the main roundabout at the entrance to the town. Note that the hard shoulder gets very narrow here so watch the traffic. Just after the roundabout, the finish is just around the next left turn. Overall, a reasonably flat 10 mile course and one where you can post a fast time.

Waterford...Dungarvan 10 introduction

The 2nd race in the Munster Ten-Mile Spring Classics Series kicks off next Sunday, the 1st of February with the Dungarvan 10 mile road race in West Waterford. Over the next few days, we'll have a look at this race in a series of posts covering the introduction today, a preview on Wednesday and a look ahead to the all important weather forecast on Thursday.

Race numbers.......The numbers running in this race have grown every year for the last few years but have really taken off in the last 2 years.

Stats........2004 = 328, 2005 = 405, 2006 = 427, 2007 = 516 and 2008 = 699.

For the race this year, they already have 627 pre-entries (422 men, 205 women). With a large number of runners expected to enter on the day, there is little doubt that they will get a record entry. The big question really is which side of the 1,000 mark will they end up with. Whatever the figure is, it will be a huge turnout for a race that attracted 'only' 328 runners 5 years ago.

Please note that pre-entries are now closed. If you are interested in running next Sunday, you can enter on the day and the cost will be €20.

Waterford...Over 600 now pre-registered for the Dungarvan 10

At the Mallow 10 yesterday, West Waterford AC took in another 250 entires for their 10 mile race coming up on the 1st of February. This brings the total of pre-registered entries up close to 600. With 3 weeks to go, it's almost certain that they will get a record turnout on the day.

Munster Ten-Mile Spring Classics Series

With the new year now underway, it's time to look at one of the major running series on the road racing calendar locally. The Munster Ten-Mile Spring Classics Series consists of 4 ten mile road races.....the Mallow 10 in January, the Dungarvan 10 in Ferbruary, the Ballycotton 10 in March and the Kilnaboy 10 in Co.Clare in April. For anyone interested in doing the Cork City Marathon in June, this series is an excellent way to get ready for that event.

Kerry...Results of the Beaufort 10k - 1st Jan 2009

2009 got off to a good start in Kerry with almost 100 runners taking part in the Beaufort 10k on the 1st of January, an increase of roughly 50% on the numbers last year. Printed below are the race results thanks to John Walshe of Ballycotton Running Promotions and a race report by Donal O'Donoghue.

"I made it to the Beaufort 10k race today, the first of 2009 in the south-west.
There were 98 people in total, including a few familiar faces from Cork, and John Walshe did the results.
The day started dull and overcast, but as soon as I passed over the Cork-Kerry border, the sun came out, and the road widened.
This must be yet another case of John Walshe bringing the good weather with him!

Registration was in the Community Centre. An unusual feature - there were no official bibs. Numbers were written down on sticky labels, as people entered. Maybe I could suggest that they recycle bibs from other races, just like the Rising Sun "Straight Mile" ?

The race start was by the yellow "T Junction" side, outside the Garda Station.
We headed west, passing the Community Centre.
Just after 1km, we took a left turn at the Grotto, followed by a right just before the 2km mark, and passed the primary school. The remainder of the route was clockwise leading back to the Community Centre.
There were several markers at the kilometre, but I didn't see all of them. At about 5km, there was a water station. Although I feel these are less needed in cold weather, judging by the number of dropped cups, at least half the field must have used it. There was a bit of a short hill about 6km. At about 7km, there was a short but severe head wind. Very much like the start of the 5 mile race in Bandon last Sunday.

Everybody received one pint (568 ml !) of Milk from Lee Strand Co-Op Creamery, at the finish line.
There were tea and sandwiches in the Community Hall. The route showed a view of the Kerry Mountains to the South. There was a big contrast in old long-abandoned, ivy covered small houses of our forefathers, side-by side with some very fine new houses. It would be a nice place to visit on a good Summer's day.

There was a decent finisher's plaque for all.
It resembles a silver-effect plate, with a gold rim, and a label "Charles O'Shea, 10km 1989-2009".
Complete with a plastic stand for mounting on one's mantelpiece.

While waiting for the results, I was talking to Brendan Joy, the MJ winner, who did it in 39:06. He told me he had just finished climbing Mangerton Mountain, and rowing is his main sport. He'll be very good if he keeps at it.

Late in the prize-giving, they decided to also give 3rd place prizes in the Ladies veteran categories.
So, there's a prize out there somewhere for Mary Murphy, St Finbarr's AC, who left before this was announced.
Mary Toher also won in the F50 category.

Kerry...Preview of the Beaufort 10km Road Race - Thurs 1st Jan 2009 (2pm)

This 10 km road race take place in the small village of Beaufort which is just a few kms to the West of Killarney. The numbers are usually pretty small yet by all accounts, it is supposed to be a really nice race. The route is along nice quiet country roads with the mighty MacGillcuddys Reeks providing a backdrop to the south.

How to get there........if you are coming from the Cork direction, take the relief road around Killarney and take the N for Killorglin. After Fossa, pass the turn off left for Gap of Dunloe and take the next left.

The last few days have been very busy with no shortage of races in the province. There was something there for everyone...from fun runs in Waterford to a 10 mile road race in Limerick.
