Race Notice...Butlerstown 10k - Fri 20th Apr 2012

The 30th annual Butlerstown 10k road race is coming up on Friday, the 20th of April 2012 at 7pm. This is the second race in the Ger Wyley Sports / Nike Summer Race series.

Located on the western outskirts of Waterford City, this race is just off the N25 Cork/Dungarvan/Waterford road. If you are coming from the west then you can turn off at the roundabout on the N25 and follow the directions for Kilmeaden.

Stay on the R680 road and drive towards Waterford on what was the old Cork road. After a few kms, you will come to the Holy Cross Bar. Parking is available behind the bar or at the Butlerstown GAA grounds which is only 200 metres away. The entry fee is €10 and you enter at the GAA grounds.

The race course itself is basically in the shape of a square with each side roughly half a mile or 800 metres in length. To complete 10 kms, you will have to complete three loops. The start and finish is on the western part of the loop. This is a nice quiet road which has a very gentle slope from north to south.

The southern leg is inside a hard shoulder and is a gradual uphill to the roundabout. The eastern leg is on a footpath alongside the ring road and is a gradual downhill. The northern leg is by far the hardest. As you can see, it's named as Oliver's Hill for a reason! ;o) The is a good pull uphill for about the first 500 metres and you have to do this three times. It's the only really serious hill in the course.

Refreshments and prizes afterwards at the Holy Cross bar...

Race notice...Marine Climb 6 mile road race - Fri 13th Apr 2012

'Ger Wyley Sports/Nike Summer Series 20th Annual Marine Climb 6 Mile Road Race'...Fri 13th April 2012 at 7pm. Starting in Dungarvan in West Waterford, this race may be of interest to runners in East Cork or South Tipperary as well. It is perhaps a bit unusual in that it is a point to point race rather than a loop. While you normally should have no problem getting a lift back, if you are going with friends then consider leaving a car beforehand at the Marine Bar for the return journey.

This is the first race of the Ger Wyley/Nike summer series. Entries for the race will be taken in St. Joseph's primary school, Dungarvan. This is right alongside the church as you drive into the town from the Cork side. Entry fee for the race is 8 euros and is open to all runners over 16 years of age. There is plenty of parking nearby near the start and near the local sports centre.

The race starts at the waters edge near the band stand at 7.00 pm and the race goes out the Cork road and then left. Up to roughly the 2.8 mile mark, the course is pretty reasonable with plenty of flat and downhill sections. The second half of the course is a different story however. This is where the climbing begins. The road twists and turns as you climb up a consistent gradient before coming back out onto the hard shoulder of the main road around 4.5 miles. Pretty soon, you turn off again onto another country road which brings you to the rear of the Marine Bar which is located on the main road.

This race traditionally see’s a big turnout for the start of the series. While the route may be seen as a challenge, there are no really serious hills so it's suitable for anyone who can do 6 miles comfortably. Prizes for individual Senior and Masters Men's and Women's categories. Prizes also for handicap teams of 5, which will be picked on the night. Course Record: Siobhain O’ Doherty Borrisokane 37.48 (2009). James Sullivan Waterford A.C 30.20 (1995)

The Marine Bar has been located on this spot for well over 200 years. Named after the soldiers that used to stop here, it was a long history which can be seen HERE

Please note that there is a separate charge if you want to enter the overall series on the night.

Update from the organisers...

MonsterMAC 2012

You may already be aware Fifty Three Degrees North are on board as 2012 race sponsor.

RACE SIGN-IN
This will make it easier for those living in the Cork region to sign-in at their 53 Deg North Cork store between 12 noon and 9pm on Friday 27th April.
As an added bonus they will be giving away free Wigwam socks (RRP €15) to the first 150 to register in store.  Their Cork Store is located at Unit 7, The Cornmarket Centre, Paul Street, Co. Cork - 021 494 9804

If you cannot make that then you can sign-in on race day at the Millstreet Country Park from 8.30am until 9.30am for Expert and 10am only for Sport and Baby MAC so the Cork city sign in will allow you to arrive a bit later especially if you are doing the Sport or Baby MAC events!
At race sign-in you will collect your race tee-shirt, race number and timing chip.

RACE START TIMES
10 am MonsterMAC EXPERT race
11 am BigMAC SPORT race (wave for Elite and Intermediate)
11.30 am BigMAC SPORT race (wave for Joggers)

EVENT ON-LINE REGISTRATION
Final online registration closes at midnight on Wednesday 25th. No further entries accepted after this time so please get anyone you know that intends to enter to do so before midnight on Wednesday

ROUTES MARKED
The bike routes for all 3 races have already been marked if you want to get out there and get some practice this week.  Note that SPORT and BabyMAC running routes will only be marked out the day before the race.
The EXPERT Run Route in the Forest to the East of Musheramore has been also marked out.

We hope your final training is going well and hopefully the website MonsterMAC SPORT and BabyMAC Training Programs have been proved useful for your preparations.

Your entry fee to the Millstreet Country Park on race day is already included in your registration fee - everyone else coming to support will pay a subsidised entry fee of €3 (normally €9 per person).
Don't forget our post race party will be held on Saturday night in the Wallis Arms Hotel with complimentary nightclub entry for race entrants (keep your race number as your entry ticket).

Final race update will be sent again on Thursday when we have finalised the wave allocations and published the entry list.

We welcome your comments on our Facebook page (lots of stuff up there already) and we look forward to seeing you in Millstreet on the 28th.
