Race notice...Marine Climb 6 mile road race...Dungarvan, Waterford - Fri 12th Apr 2013

The 2013 Ger Wyley Sports Summer Series starts on Friday, the 12th of April with the 21st Annual Marine Climb 6 Mile Road Race. The race starts at 7pm sharp!

Starting in Dungarvan in West Waterford, this race may be of interest to runners in East Cork or South Tipperary as well. It is perhaps a bit unusual in that it is a point to point race rather than a loop. While you normally should have no problem getting a lift back, if you are going with friends then consider leaving a car beforehand at the Marine Bar for the return journey.

Entries for the race will be taken in St. Joseph's primary school, Dungarvan. This is right alongside the church as you drive into the town from the Cork side. Entry fee for the race is 5 euros and is open to all runners over 16 years of age. There is plenty of parking nearby near the start and near the local sports centre. There is an additional €5 fee if you want to enter the overall series.

More details here from West Waterford AC...
21st ANNUAL MARINE CLIMB KICK STARTS THE SUMMER SERIES THIS FRIDAY.
Its 21 years ago this Friday when a hand full of runners participated in the very first Marine Climb road race. On that occasion, one Pat Heffernan of Thurles Crokes AC who was a top notch road runner of that era was the first to reach the top and go down in the history books as the first winner of the race. When the idea of the race was vetted, Christy O’Neill of the Marine Bar agreed to sponsor the event and this he has continued to do for all of those 21 years since. The club are greatfull to Christy and Helen and all the race committee at the Marine for all their work and help with the event for all those years and our wish is that we will continue with this association with the Marine for as many more years to come.

21ST YEAR SPECIAL PRIZE....As it's a very special occasion Friday night with it being the 21st year of the event, West Waterford AC through the kind sponsorship of the Martine Bar will give a special prize to not one but two lucky runner’s in the race, A Men’s and a Ladies prize will be awarded so best of luck to all participants.

MARINE CLIMB RACE INFO....Entries for the first race in this year’s Ger Wyley Summer Series will be taken at St. Josephs Primary School from 6 pm and the race will start at 7 pm sharp from the Lookout. The race will of course finish at the Marine Bar, home of our generous sponsor. The race distance is 6 miles. The race categories are: 1st 3 Men, Masters Men over 40,45,50,55 and 1st Male Junior, 1st 3 Women,  Masters over 35,40,45,50, 1st Female Junior, There will also be plenty of spot prizes drawn from amongst all non-prize-winners. Entry to the race is €5 and participants may also pay an extra €5 to enter the summer series overall. A 30 Euro SKINS voucher will be awarded to all runners who complete 5 of the 10-race summer programme. A cash bonus of 100 euro is on offer to the first male (30.20) and female (37.48) to break either course record Friday night.

Waterford...Ger Wyley Sports Summer Road Race Series for 2013

THE 19TH ANNUAL GER WYLEY SPORTS / SKINS SUMMER SERIES 2013.

The 19th annual Ger Wyley Sports/SKINS Summer Series organised by West Waterford athletic club gets under way on Friday, the 12th April with the “Marine Bar” sponsored 19th Annual Marine Climb 6 mile road race. At the Ger Wyley Sports Store in Dungarvan recently, David Ling Skins general manager for Ireland and UK, David McCarthy Skins manager Ireland, Ger Wyley of Ger Wyley Sports and James Veale chairman of West Waterford Athletic Club were present for the launch of the 2013 Ger Wyley Sports/Skins Summer Series.

Ger Wyley of Ger Wyley Sports, David Ling SKINS Ireland and James Veale of West Waterford AC
This sponsorship is a brand new sponsorship for West Waterford AC and one which the club was delighted to secure. On behalf of the club and all the runners who take part in this series, WWAC said that they owe Ger Wyley a great amount of gratitude for his on-going input into the local running scene. At the launch, chairman James Veale said..."This series is the original and still the only 10 race summer series in the country, a fact that we are very proud of here in West Waterford AC".

At the launch Ger Wyley welcomed SKINS onboard as the new co-series sponsors. He also thanked David Ling who traveled from the U K and David McCarthy for their involvement in the road racing series in West Waterford and looked forward to many more years of his involvement with the club now that SKINS are co-sponsors also.

Skins General Manager for the UK & Ireland David Ling said...“We are extremely pleased to have the opportunity of becoming involved with this established and prestigious event. It provides an excellent platform for Skins to be able to communicate direct with the running community in association with one of Ireland’s most reputable sports retailers’’

David Mc Carthy Skins manager in Ireland spoke of his association with the store which he said was ideally located in the heart of Dungarvan town. As a SKINS Compression Centre, and as the largest sports store in the south east, they offer potential SKINS customers great personal service and advice, and a wide range of garments from which to choose the right product relevant to their individual sport.

10 RACE PROGRAMME....Again this year, it’s the traditional 10 race programme and West Waterford AC said that they were delighted to announce that they have retained the sponsor for each of the 10 individual races in the series. There are a full programme of races right through the summer months finishing up with the Ardmore 5 on Friday August 09th, where the overall winner for 2013 will be presented with the Micheál O Hogáin memorial Cup.

BEST VALUE SERIES AT 5 EURO ENTRY FEE....This year also, West Waterford AC mindful of the current economical climate have decided that all of the clubs organised events in the series will now have an entry fee of only 5 euro. Whereas the overall prize fund for the series will increase, this is achievable with thanks to the generosity of the sponsors. As a non-profit making club which has always strived to cater for all levels of participants and promoted itself as having events organised for runners by runners, West Waterford AC feel runners will appreciate the effort being made by the club in this matter and participants from far and near will support their efforts by participating in West Waterford AC organised events......"We're really looking forward to seeing runners of all standards and our promise is that everyone will be made welcome."

Traffic to the Running in Munster site hits a new peak in March...

The Running in Munster site hit a new peak of 15,455 hits in the month of March 2013, a jump of about 2,000 on the previous peak.

It is after the Running in Cork site probably the second largest running related website in Munster at present.

Some of the newcomers to the site might be curious as to how this site got started and how it got so large?

Back in late 2006, I started the Running in Cork site as more of a personal website to track my own training and also to find out how blogs worked. Almost straight away, it became obvious that a lot of the results of local races couldn't be found online so I then started writing about races....dates, locations, previews, results and so on.

It was also obvious from early on that no good race calendar existed. There were plenty of club websites with their own versions but between mistakes and lack of maintenance, the quality of information was poor. So, I began a simple race calendar of Cork only events. As it evolved, it became obvious that a race calendar based on one county was very limited. It was fine for people living in say Cork City and that were not interested in traveling but what about people in East Cork, North Cork, West Cork? As a result, I then started to include events in West Waterford, South Limerick and Kerry and of course the results of those races as well. All of this additional 'spillover' meant that another site was required and the Running in Munster site was started in June of 2008.

It might be nice to say it started with a well planned five year strategy laid out ahead but nothing could be further from the truth! ;o) While the Cork site was getting the main attention, the Munster site was only getting the occasional post and yet, the traffic began to grow.

As the traffic grew, the calendar on the site has evolved as well. It has gone from a list in the sidebar of the site to a spreadsheet on another site to the current format where both sites have an identical copy of the same calendar. As this has improved, it has made it easier to keep track of what races were on and as a result, more and more results went up on the site and this has resulted in more traffic to the site.

Fast forward to 2013 and the Running in Cork and Running in Munster sites are now probably the two largest running related sites in the province. While the Cork site is still the primary one and contains a lot of running related news, the Running in Munster site now serves the following main functions.....

1) Calendar......Have the most detailed and an up to date calendar in the province showing all events ....from serious road races to fun runs.

2) Results.......Put up results or links to results for all events in the province. This means that results can actually be found by people instead of them having to look across a load of different websites, blogs and Facebook pages.

3) Race feedback......Some races are poorly planned and people like to air their grievances when things go wrong, especially if they are after paying a lot to enter. This along with the good feedback helps others to decide which are the best events to enter.

While the traffic to the site continues to grow, it also has an associated Facebook page which helps people keep track of the results as they go up. If you are on Facebook then just visit the page and hit the 'Like' button.
