Race notice...Clashmore 5 mile road race - Fri 14th June 2013

The 12th Annual Old Still bar Clashmore 5 mile road race is coming up on Friday, the 14th of June. This is the 6th race in the Ger Wyley/SKINS Summer Series. The race starts at 8 pm in the village of Clashmore in West Waterford. Entries for the race will be taken at the Old Still Bar in the village and the entry fee is 5 euros.

Directions...Located just off the N25 Cork to Waterford road, Clashmore is ideally placed to attract runners from both counties. Just look for the R671 road which is signposted for Clonmel and Clashmore.

Registration, refreshments and prize-giving will be at the Old Still Bar which is right in the centre of the village.

Please note because of the closure of one of the roads which was a part of the usual course, we have now decided on a new race course which we hope will meet with approval from all runners on the night.

Athletic Clubs in Clare by size...May 2013

Athletics Ireland recently released some stats showing the size of athletic clubs in Co.Clare...

As can be seen above, the inclusion of juveniles make the Ennis based clubs some of the largest.

Going on the assumption that only a small number of adults in a club will be coaching juveniles and the rest are probably involved in road and track events, these are the largest clubs in Co.Clare by adult members...

The largest is Marathon Club Ireland which has registered it's members through the Clare AAI. This represents only a percentage of the total membership of that club as many of it's members are already members of other AAI clubs and there was no need to register them through the Clare board.

The next two clubs Ennis Track AC and BMOH AC continue to show strong growth. Both have increased their adult membership by just over 20% in the last 9 months. In May 2011, Ennis Track had 48 adult members. This increased to 63 in August 2012 and is now up to 77. BMOH AC based in Sixmilebridge is a new club having been only established in 2012. In August of that year, it already had 56 members and that has now increased to 68.

The next biggest club is Kilmurray/Ibrickane/N Clare AC. They have grown 15% since August 2012 but a lot of this was making up for a loss in numbers that year. In the two years since May 2011, they have grown 10%.

The remaining clubs have remained more or less static. St.John's AC have doubled their adult members in the last 9 months but they were coming from a very low base.

In the world of Marathon running, the Brathay 10 in 10 in England's Lake District is famous for it's 10 separate Marathons over 10 consecutive days.

As of 2013, there is now an Irish version with a 10 in 10 in Sixmilebridge, Co.Clare.

· 20 participants have signed up for the 10 marathons in a row (as far as I am aware this is the biggest field anywhere in Europe to tackle this challenge)

Big jump in numbers for the 2013 Ger Wyley Sports series...

Now that the Ger Wyley Sports/SKINS Summer Series has reached the half way point, the organising club West Waterford AC have announced that there is a 70% increase on the numbers as compared to last year.

HUGE INCREASE IN ENTRIES FOR 2013...As we have now reached the half-way point of the 2013 summer series we are absolutely delighted to be able to report that we have a grand total of 104 entries received to date for the series as opposed to the 2012 figure of 61 at the same stage last year, and remember we still have two more races before the cut off, The Old Still Bar Clashmore 5 and The Dungarvan Leader Dromana 5, strictly no more entries to the series will be accepted after this race. The club and sponsors are delight with the positive response to the series this year and we thank all runners who have entered. Race notice...Kilfinane 5 mile road race - Fri 21st June 2013

From the race organisers........Kilfinane AC 5 Mile Road Race...A 5 mile road race for Runners, Joggers and Walkers on 21st June 2013 at 19.30pm; a fantastic route taking in the beautiful village of Kilfinane and the scenic surrounds.

In 2012 the race attracted over 200 entrants. This will be the third year of the race and it is anticipated it will continue to expand and hopefully attract even more competitors due to the increase in the number of prizes on offer this year. All proceeds go towards the development of the local athletics club Kilfinane AC and is the clubs main fundraiser each year. At a maximum entry fee of €12 this is one of the most competitively priced events on the running calender.

Post race light refreshments and prize giving at Scoil Pol, Secondary School.

All entrants must either pre enter online or enter on the day with entries open from 17.30pm. Entry on the day is €12

A total of 172 runners took part in this year's Deadman's 5 mile road race in Carrick-on-Suir in Co.Tipperary, a jump of about 38% on the 2012 figure.

Carraig Hotel 'Deadman's 5'

The Carraig Hotel Deadman's 5 mile road race was held in glorious sunshine in Carrick-on-Suir on Friday evening. A field of 177 athletes lined up for this race which is the third of five races in the hugely popular OutfieldSports.ie Three Counties Challenge. The race started at the historic Ormonde Castle and passed along the town's Main Street before looping around to head out into the country. Even as the field passed the one-mile marker at the Cregg Road railway crossing, Alan O' Shea from Bantry AC had established a clear lead in the men's race while Siobhan O' Doherty from Borrisokane, winner of the Flora Women's Mini-Marathon in Dublin on Monday, had taken the advantage in the ladies' race. It quickly became clear that these two athletes were not going to be reeled in and, in fact, both ran out very convincing winners.

First 3 Men home in the Carraig Hotel "Deadman's 5" Roadrace:- Frank Quinlan(Waterford AC) 2nd, Alan O'Shea (Bantry AC) 1st and David Ryan (Clonmel AC ) 3rd.

Frank Quinlan(Waterford AC) and David Ryan (Clonmel AC) had a great battle for second spot with Frank eventually proving the stronger. In the ladies' race, Dympna Ryan (Dundrum AC) was second ahead of Angela McCann (Clonmel AC) who had taken second place in the Cork City Marathon on Monday.

First 3 Women home in Race 3 of the Adidas / Outfield Sports.ie 3 Counties Challenge :- Dymphna Ryan (Dundrum AC) 2nd,  Siobhan O'Doherty (Borrisakane AC) 1st and Angela McCann (Clonmel AC) 3rd

Carrick AC's first finisher was Daragh Byrne who took the O/40 first prize while Emer O' Brien led home the host club's ladies who took the team prize.

Carrick AC would like to thank all who helped to make this race such a great success. We are particularly grateful to the Carraig Hotel for the continued generous sponsorship of the race since its inception. Thanks also to Alan Treacy of Outfield Sports for sponsoring the overall series for the past seven years.

Stewarding is especially important in a race that passes through the town and we are very grateful to Barry Torpey and his team of stewards for ensuring the safety of all participants. The assistance of the local Garda Siochana was also greatly appreciated. A big thank-you to all the volunteers who helped with race registration, timing and results. Once again, Elaine Walsh provided superb post-race refreshments and food for which we are very grateful. The Swan GAA Club Centre was once again our race headquarters and we would like to thank the club for the use of their excellent facilities.

The Three Counties Challenge moves to County Waterford for the fourth instalment of this year's series. The AutoPower Rathgormack 5 mile race will take place on Friday,12th July at 7:30pm. Last year's race was won by Brian Murphy (Carrick AC) in 26:26 with Margaret Danagher (Templemore) taking the ladies' event in 30:44. Another big entry is certain for this very popular race.

Preview of the Killarney Lions 10k mini-marathon...Sat 8th June 2013

This 10k fun run is coming up in Killarney on Saturday, the 8th of June 2013...

Race HQ is the Killarney Plaza Hotel in the heart of Killarney. Registrations at the Plaza from 9.30 am. All proceeds in aid of Kerry Hospice.

The race starts near the Killarney Plaza Hotel but soon diverts into the park. The route consists of narrow roads and any hills are pretty minor affairs. It really is a superb location for a race.

Tipperary...Preview of the Deadmans 5 mile road race - Fri 7th June 2013

The third race of five in the 3 Counties Challenge. is coming up on Friday, the 7th of June with the Deadman's 5 mile in Carrick-on-Suir in S.Tipperary.

From the organisers......The Outfieldsports.ie 3 Counties Challenge moves back to County Tipperary for Race 3 in the series, the Carraig Hotel "Deadman's 5" mile road race on Friday 7th June @ 7:30 sharp. This race, now in it's eight year, starts at the picturesque Ormonde Castle in Carrick on Suir, and goes through the center of the town before taking in a loop of the famous Deadman's Boreen, finishing on a lovely long straight stretch at the back of the Town Park , 5 Miles in total. It is mostly flat, with a short drag in the middle, but mile 4 on is slightly downhill, so a good time is possible.

Registration takes place at the Carrick Swan GAA Hall (behind the Garda Barracks) from 6:00 p.m. Please note the race must start on time at 7:30, as part of the route goes over a railway crossing, so Registration will close at 7:10.  You can avoid the rush on the night by entering online at www.runireland.com. Entry fee is €10.00

There will be changing and shower facilities after the race in the Club Hall, and also after race refreshments will be in the hall this year.

The Prize fund is the same for all the races in the series:- 1st/2nd/3rd Man & Woman €200/€125/€75 and usual age categories. There is also a Mens and Womens Team Prize and loads of spot prizes.Please note , as the race distance is 5 Miles you must be over 18 to run (as per conditions of AAI permit).

Don't forget this is race 3 of a 5 race series, and anyone running 4 out of 5 races will receive a €25 voucher for Adidas technical running shoes from series sponsor Outfield Sports in Carrick on Suir.

Tipperary...Results of the Walls of Fethard 4 mile road race - Wed 29th May 2013

For the vast majority of races, the first person home is nearly always a man. It's pretty usual to see the first woman coming home in about 10th position or so overall.

In the 2013 Walls of Fethard 4 mile race, Siobhain Doherty of Borrisokane was not only the winner of the womens race but she was also the first across the line....an excellent performance.

Race report from the organisers...
Siobhain O Doherty wins Fethard 4miler...The Fethard Road Races took place last Wednesday night, 30th May with a record entry. This year there were two events, the Open 4 mile race which attracted 142 athletes and the 2 Mile event that was aimed at the ever growing Meet and Train athletes and this attracted an entry of 18. This is a major increase on last year’s combined numbers of 80.
In the 4 mile event we had Siobhain O Doherty of Borrisokane holding off the fast finishing Shane Mullaney of Thurles Crokes to become the first women winner of this event, a brilliant achievement. Siobhain’s winning time was 21 mins 59 secs with Shane credited with the same time. There was a big cheer for Fintan Rice of the host Club, who is running very well at present, as he came through to finish 2nd in 22 mins 5 secs when 3rd overall. Paddy Cummins of Moycarkey Coolcroo who has shown very good form in recent weeks also finished strongly when 3rd Senior man in 22 mins 9 secs. Dave Kenneally of Thurles Crokes was 1st over 40 in 23:52, then we had James Ryan 1st 0/45 in 22:31, Brendan Ahearne of Kilsheelan 1st 0/50 in 24:09, Jack Alexander of Coolquill 1st 0/55 in 25:00, Joe Grinsell of Clonmel 1st 0/60 in 30:39 and Paddy Shelley of Ballynonty 1st 0/65 in 30:28. Dean Campion of Thurles was 1st Junior in 28:50. The 1st local man was Michael Moclair in 24:49. In the ladies race Dymphna Ryan of Dundrum ran very well when 2nd Senior Woman in 23:04 with Clare Annan of Carrick on Suir 3rd in 24:20. Mary Molloy of Clonmel was 1st woman over 35 in 27:40 with Martina Ryan of Thurles Crokes 1st 0/40 in 26:40, Kathleen O Meara of Thurles Crokes was 1st 0/45 in 31:42 and Eileen Skelly of Carrick on Suir was 1st 0/50 in 33:25. Jennifer Rice of Fethard won the Junior Woman’s award in 32:42 while Aine Doocey won the 1st Local woman’s prize in 29:30. The organising committee would like to thank everyone who helped to make this event such a success.
