Results of the Killarney Maxi/Half Marathon & 10k - Sat 14th July 2012

A total of 1,222 runners took part in this years Run Killarney event in Kerry. Despite the threat of rain, it never really got bad and the conditions were ok for the three races. The Maxi-Marathon attracted a field of 292 runners while the Half-Marathon had 339. Both races started slightly late up near Molls Gap and this probably resulted in those runners merging with the 10k runners a bit too late. If the 10k race had started say 5 minutes later, it would probably have made a big difference.

Preview of the Killarney Half-Marathon...Sat 14th July 2012

Just a quick look ahead to the three races coming up in Killarney on Saturday morning, the 14th of July.

Both the 15 mile Maxi-Marathon and the Half-Marathon start up near Molls Gap. For the first miles, you run downhill with views of the upper lakes of Killarney in the valley below with the mountains in the background.

In parts, the road flattens out but it soon starts dropping again.

As the road is closed, it is the only chance to run on this twisting course which would be normally be busy with traffic. Running past the many lakes and open woodland, it makes a nice contrast from the usual type of race. It is a really scenic route and it would be a great way for any tourist to see the countryside from a unique viewpoint.

Around the 9-10 mile mark, you reach the end of the downhill running and you turn off left into the park proper with narrow little tracks....not really an issue as the field was well thinned out by this stage. There were some small climbs here, most very short but certainly not as easy as the downhill running of the previous few miles.

As you can see from the photo above, this will be the type of course that most of the 10k runners will run on. As you get near the finish, the Maxi runners will put in a small extra loop while the Half and 10k runners will head towards the finish.

A really nice place for a run........weather permitting! The current forecast is.......Saturday will be cool, fresh, brighter day with a mixture of cloudy periods and sunny spells.

Race notice...Ballymacarbry 5 mile road race - Fri 27th July 2012

The 9th race of 10 in the Ger Wyley Sports Summer Series continues on Friday, the 27th of July 2012 with the Ballymacarbry 5 mile road race. Located on the R672 road between Dungarvan and Clonmel, the race which starts at 7:30pm should attract a good crowd.

From the organisers West Waterford AC......
17th Annual Doocey’s Bar Ballymacarbry 5
The Ballymac event is held over a very exciting road and wood mix course. This is always a top class event held in a scenic part of the county. The prize categories include men's, ladies and juniors. Race entries will be taken at the Ballymacarbry Community hall and the entry fee is 8 euros and the presentation of prizes will take place at Doocey’s Bar.  Course Record:  Pauline Lambe Waterford AC 29.48 (2010), William Harty West Waterford AC 25.00 (1996)

Directions........from Dungarvan, take the R672 Clonmel road. From East Cork, branch off N25 at Kinsalebeg, take the R671 road through Clashmore.
From Clonmel, take the R671 south.

Entries taken at the local community hall which is easily the largest building in the village. It's about 250m from the Hall to Dooceys Bar where refreshments are available after the race before the presentation of prizes.

The start line is a few hundred metres out the side road, facing away from Dooceys Bar. You run east along the Nire Valley towards the Comeragh Mountains on a relatively flat road, roughly parallel to the River Nier. About a mile out, you pass a small bridge on the left. At about 2.5 miles, you turn left and go over a small bridge, and through a private garden, and head back west on a forest track in the Knockalisheen Woods. There is a bit of a climb here and then a drop down to the that bridge you passed earlier. Cross the bridge, and rejoin the original road, and run west to the finish line.

The forest track is only a quarter of the race, but it is the hardest part of the course. There may be a view at the high point, but you'll be too busy looking down at where your next foot step will be ;o)

Start and Finish are not quite the same point. Start is a bit east of the finish, but both are on same road.

Limerick...Results of the Dromcollogher 4 mile road race - Mon 9th July 2012

A total of 207 runners turned out this year for the Dromcollogher 4 mile road race in South County Limerick. Back in 2009, this race had just 52 entries.  Since becoming part of the Ballyhoura Active Series of races, it has grown rapidly to the point that the numbers now are almost four times what they were just three years ago.

The mens race was won by Michael Shannon of Kilnaboy AC in a time of 20:15. The womens race was won by Loretto Duggan of St.Mary's AC in Co.Clare.

(Note....the times below are almost certainly wrong. The times given are faster than what most people recorded themselves!)

Race notice...Dingle Half, Full and Ultra Marathon - Sat 1st Sept 2012

This event is coming up on Saturday the 1st of September and must be one of the most scenic routes in Ireland. Starting in the town of Dingle at 9am..........

........the race travels west passing through the village of Ventry before heading out towards Slea Head...

What really makes this Half and Full Marathon special is the fact the roads are closed. Normally, there is a lot of tourist traffic on this narrow road and it wouldn't be really suitable for running or walking.
The road here is high above the sea and you have an incredible view out over Dingle Bay to the Iveragh Peninsula to the south with the Skelligs in the distance.

Once you pass the grotto around the 10 mile mark, the Blasket Islands come into view...

....and then the twisting coastal road...

Soon, the Half-Marathon finishes in Dunquin and there are a fleet of buses to take the runners back to Dingle. The full Marathon runners continue on towards Ballyferriter with Brandon Mountain now coming into view. From here, the route is on quiet narrow roads as it heads towards Dingle...

An incredible location for a Marathon and probably the most scenic in Ireland.

For  those that are really ambitious, there is a 50 mile Ultra-Marathon as well.

Entries....The closing date for entries is Wednesday, the 22nd of August.

Notice...Rás Na Ríochta Adventure Race - Sat 21st July 2012

The Rás Na Ríochta multi-sport adventure race is coming up in Kerry on Saturday, the 21st of July 2012.

Centered on the Cappanlea Outdoor Education Centre, this is a stunning spot for an adventure race taking in the mountains near Glenbeigh in West Kerry as well as Lough Caragh. The three disciplines involved include mountain biking, hill running and kayaking.

There are a choice of 3 courses...
1) Rás na Ríochta...Total route distance: 47km...Total height gain: 1800m...Stage 1 - Mountain Biking: 23km...Stage 2 - Hillrunning: 17km...Stage 3 - Canoeing: 3.5km...Stage 4 - Shoreline Trek: 0.5km

This is the longest of the three races and includes a substantial amount of cycling on trails and hill running.

2) The shorter Rás na Ríochta Sport...Total route distance: 24km...Total height gain: 1100m...Stage 1 - Mountain Biking: 8.5km...Stage 2 - Hillrunning: 11km...Stage 3 - Canoeing: 3.5km...Stage 4 - Shoreline Trek: 0.5km

The amount of cycling and running is a lot less with this one.

3) Rás na Ríochta Road...Total route distance: 35.5 km...Total height gain: 1170m...Stage 1 - Canoeing: 3.5km...Stage 2 - Hillrunning: 11km...Stage 3 - Biking: 21 km
With the road version, all of the cycling is on public roads so it might suit someone who wants to do the easiest course or doesn't have a mountain bike.

Each person who enters will receive a goodie bag and a technical t-shirt.  Transport and after race refreshments are included.

Registration closes on the Monday 16th July at 5pm.

Traffic to the Running in Munster site hits a new peak in May...

This post is a little bit overdue! ;o)

The Running in Munster website recorded a new high in the number of visitors with 12,101 hits during the month of May 2012.

The site started back in 2008 and at first, it operated as a bit of a spillover from the main website, the Running in Cork blog. That site started in late 2006 and it became   obvious from early on that interest in road races for runners in Cork doesn't necessarily end at the border of the county! If someone lives in say East Cork then they are as likely to be interested in races in Co.Waterford as they are in Co.Cork.

At first, I used to put up the results of the occasional race but soon, I noticed that a lot  of race results were scattered across a large number of small websites and were hard to find. In fact, some races didn't seem to put their results anywhere so that people could see them. So as time went on, I kept adding race results until now when the site has fixtures and results for nearly every race in Munster. The calendar used on this site is currently the most accurate and detailed calendar for races in the  Munster region.

At present, this website with roughly 10k hits per month is probably the second largest running related website in Munster after the Running in Cork site.
