Results of the Dungarvan 10 Mile Road Race - Sun 31st Jan 2010

A total of 987 runners turned out for the 2010 Dungarvan 10 mile road race. The weather conditions were ideal with bright sunshine and a slight cooling breeze. I have taken part in this race for the last few years and have seen it improve year on year. A few years ago with around 500 runners, there were problems with a much smaller venue, a different course and people not getting goody bags before the start. This year with twice the numbers, things went like clockwork. It's a credit to the members of West Waterford AC for organising what is now one of the best 10 mile road races in the country.

Results...
Now doubt the official results will be out soon but in the meantime, here are the provisional results.

Weather forecast for the Dungarvan 10....Sun 31st Jan 2010

It looks as if the weather conditions for this race will be almost ideal.....sunny, bright and cool. As you can see from the forecast above, bright sunny weather is predicted with a max temperature of only 5 degrees. The predicted wind is from the North so it's likely to be very cold in exposed spots but it would seem to be fairly light so the wind chill may not be so bad.

The biggest fear is that a hard frost is predicted for Saturday night. Considering the fact that the race is on at 1pm, there should be plenty of time for anything to thaw out although I guess that there may be sheltered spots that won't see the sun all day. Will these be a problem? Hopefully the frost won't be too bad considering that Dungarvan is on the coast. If it was 20-30 miles inland, it might be a different story.

The wind although light is likely to be an issue during some parts of the race. We will be running into it from 2.2 to 3.3 miles and during the last 2 miles. It will be noticed because of how cold it is rather than because of it's strength. Dress accordingly...

Update 09:00 Sun......the eastern part of the country is covered by cloud at the moment while there are clear blue skies in Cork. Best prediction for the race is blue skies with a good possibility of some clouds. Looks like it's going to be a good day!

Preview of the Dungarvan 10 Mile Road Race...Sun 31st Jan

Several years ago, I remember reading that the stated aim of the organisers of this race was to reach the 1000 mark. This year, they have well and truly broken that barrier with an entry of over 1100 runners. Given the fact that it was pre-entry only, they probably could have reached well over 1,500 entries if they had accepted entries on the day as well.

Pre-entries....
Again, just a reminder for anyone who hasn't been keeping track of events! This race is pre-entry only. You cannot enter on the day like you could in previous years. For those of you who did pre-enter, you should have received your race number during the week by post. If you did not get your number in the post then look out for the help desk in the sports hall.
A full list of all entrants can be found HERE.

Changes this year....
As well as the fact that it is pre-entry only this year, there are a few other changes as well.
1) Instead of the usual cotton t-shirt, this year they will be giving out Nike dry-fit running tops which are a lot more useful.
2) The first 3 miles or so of the race are different from previous years. More below...
3) They will be giving out the dry-fit top with the goody bag at the finish line once they get your number. If you are not interested in the refreshments or prizes, you don't have to go to the sports hall at all.

Getting there.....
The main venue for the race in terms of parking, changing, prizes, refreshments, etc is at the Dungarvan Sports Hall. If you are coming from the Cork side of the town, take the right at the roundabout on the entrance to the town and keep driving straight. You'll go through the town and you'll find the Sports Hall next to the harbour. There is plenty of parking here and in the surrounding area. Follow the signs and stewards instructions on the day.

The course......
As you can see from the map above, it has changed from 2009. Last year, we did a loop in the countryside to the north-west of the top. That has been eliminated this year and the result is probably an even faster course.
The start line is roughly a mile from the Sports Centre. The route heads back towards the centre, then a short loop in the town like last year and back out the road towards the start line again. Last year, we turned off right here and ran parallel to the main road. This year, we head towards the roundabout on the main N25 road and along the hard shoulder. At some stage along this section.....and presumably the earlier section of it.....the stewards will probably get all of the runners to cross to the right hand hard shoulder of the main road.
Just after 2 miles, we turn off right into the countryside and head back towards the town on a quiet road. At about 3.5 miles, we rejoin the usual Dungarvan 10 route. From here to about 6.5 miles, the running is pretty flat. At 6.5 miles, we have a downhill section and after that, it's flat again until you reach the main road again at about 8.2 miles.
Once you are back on the main road, there is a slight pull as you climb the hill but nothing too serious. You run inside the hard shoulder until you reach the town again, through the roundabout and on towards the last bend which is only about 100 metres before the finish line. Click on the map above for a bigger version.

Overall, there are no really serious hills in the race and with the changes this year, it would seem as if it's one of the fastest 10 mile courses around.

We'll have a look at the weather forecast tomorrow.

Results of the road races on Sun 24th of Jan 2010...

There was a big turnout for all of the races in Munster on Sunday, the 24th of January 2010. Now doubt for a lot of runners, it was a welcome break to stretch those legs after all of the race cancellations recently due to the icy weather.

Cork.....
The Cork BHAA road race in Little Island attracted in excess of 400 runners on a cold, frosty but sunny Sunday morning. More info with links to some photos on the Running in Cork website.

Tipperary...
The 'Tony O'Connell' 4 mile road race in Clonmel attracted 162 runners. The full results can be seen HERE.

Waterford...
In West Waterford, they had the Colligan Cup race in Colligan Woods. With this race, you had to predict your time and the winner was the person who was the closest. The race attracted just under 140 runners and the results can be found HERE.

So overall on Sunday, almost 700 people attended road races in Munster which for a cold day in mid January is excellent.

Now that these races are out of the way, no doubt people will start thinking ahead to the next big one.....the Dungarvan 10 next Sunday.

Kerry...Results of the Beaufort 10k - Fri 1st Jan 2010

It looks as if the road race went ahead in Beaufort despite the low temperatures. By all acconts, the course was mainly clear of any ice. The results are shown below with a race report from Donal O'Donoghue...

The 22nd annual Beaufort 10k, organized by Star of the Laune AC, took place today, Friday the 1st of January.
After many events were cancelled at Christmas, this was a last chance to get in a competitive race over the holiday period.

Last year's event was at a chilly 6C. This year, New Year's Day forecasts differed, but eventually on the day, it was *minus* 2C, but calm, dry and slightly overcast.
There was the appearance of frost on every field and hedgerow, but the most important thing was that the roads themselves were virtually ice free. None the less, warnings were given at the start, to exercise due care.

84 people finished the race this year, which was down somewhat on the 98 that competed last year.
However I believe it was due more to nationwide driving-conditions, rather than fear of the cold on the course itself. Despite this, there were runners from as far away as Dublin and even France & Slovakia!

The course itself was over 10k, on very quiet roads, and marked in metric at each kilometre. It started started outside the Beaufort Garda Station, and ending outside the Community Centre. There was only one real icy patch in the last kilometre, which was clearly marked out by traffic cones. There was a water station at 5k, but given the very cold temperatures, many declined ;o)
Unlike last year, there was no severe wind on the course. However there were very few onlookers.

The local Community Centre was the hub of activity, hosting registration and some much appreciated refreshments and prize-giving. As an indication of the very cold temperatures, the pipes feeding the kitchen were frozen, and locals had to bring buckets of water, to make hot tea!

All runners received a commemorative tee-shirt, and all finishers received pint of Milk from Lee Strand Co-Op.

The Charles O'Shea Memorial Cup was awarded to the overall finisher, Ciaran O'Lionaird of Leevale AC, who finished streets ahead, in a time of 30:15, which is an amazing 4:52/mile -- despite the arctic temperatures!
This performance makes him the 2nd fastest overall finisher in the 22 races.
In second place was Cian Murphy of Iveragh AC, despite being faster than his winning time in 2009.

Lizzie Lee, was the first lady home, finishing 8th overall, nearly 4 minutes ahead of last year's winner, making it a double for Leevale AC. Gneeveguilla AC had the largest club entry, and took many prizes. Race organizer Mike Mangan led the Star of the Laune AC, taking 23rd position. John Walshe of Ballycotton Running Promotions was also on hand to take entries and produce some prompt results.

There were prizes in many categories, including a special category for local people from Beaufort, and even a special prize for Garda Enda who supervised!

It was announced that Star of the Laune AC will be holding their annual Summer race at Kilgobnet on the August Bank Holiday weekend.
