Notice...The Great Island 10 mile road race, Cobh - Sun 13th Apr 2014

So far in 2014, all of the 10 mile road races have proved to be hugely popular. The Dungarvan 10 and Mallow 10 both reached their entry limits a lot earlier than previous years while the 2,300 online entries for the 2014 Ballycotton 10 sold out in about 90 minutes.

The next big 10 mile road race coming up in Cork is the Great Island 10 in Cobh on Sunday, the 13th of April 2014 at 10:30am. Last year, they got 611 with a big community effort to make sure that it's a success and it's looks likely to be equally popular again this year.

All of the proceeds from this race go towards the Irish Cancer Society. When this race was first set up in 2010, the organisers had a target of raising €100,000 in the space of 5 years. Last year in 2013, they hit the €100k mark one year early. The aim now is to build on that success and to continue to raise much needed funds for this charity.

5 km fun run / walk...A 5km walk / run will take place on the same day for those less inclined to run 10 miles but want to be a part of the day. Leaving from the Community Centre @ 10.00am (30 mins before the main event) and will finish at the G.P.O. There is no entry fee for the walk / run but entrants would be expected to take sponsorship cards which are available from Sonya Murphy on 087 7904895 or email sonyaomurphy@gmail.com

Event notice...MMRA Trail race in Co.Clare - Sun 2nd March 2014

The fourth and final race in the Munster Mountain Running Association Spring Trail Series is on next Sunday the 2nd of March. The 5 km race is on an aera known locally as the Twelve O'Clock Hills and is located roughly halfway between Sixmilebridge and Broadford in SE Clare...

From the MMRA...Our next event takes place on Sunday, 2nd March in Co. Clare in an area known as the 12 O'Clock Hills. The race starts at 12 noon and will be 5km in length, along a fully marked trail. Registration will be open from 11am-11.45am. The cost of entry is €10, with refreshments provided afterwards.

Kerry race notice...Rathmore 4 mile road race - Sat 1st March 2014

This new 4 mile race in Rathmore Co.Kerry is being organised by Gneeveguilla Athletic Club and proceeds go towards Kerry Lifeline and Killarney Search and Rescue.

The course has been accurately measured by Jones Counter and has an Athletics Ireland licence.

This new 10 mile race in Co.Kerry attracted a field of 622 runners. Unusually enough, 55.8% of the runners were women which makes a big change from the usual 40% or so in other races over a similar distance in Munster.

Limerick...Results of the Caherdavin 5m & 10m road race - Sun 2nd Feb 2014

These two race were held on Sunday the 2nd of February. A total of 90 runners took part in the 10 mile race with 59 in the 5 mile event.

There was however a problem with the 5 mile race. See this statement from Limerick Athletics...
"In the 5 mile event there was a major error when all except 2 of the runners  were directed onto the wrong route and we apologise to the athletes that had to run a greater distance that they were supposed to. The race organisers accept responsibility for this and we will ensure that such an error will not occur in any of our events in 2014 and beyond."
