Tipperary...Results of the Champion Kiely 5 km road race, Ballyneale...Fri 28th June 2013

Race report from Clonmel AC...The Champion Kiely 5k Road race took place last Friday night with over 200 participants taking part. After the race started, a group of three dictated the pace with Brian Maher (Kilkenny City Harries), Sergio Ciobanu (Clonliffe Harriers) and Thomas Hayes of Kilkenny City Harriers. Eventually it was down to two after 2k with Brian and Sergio at the front. As they entered the village with a Km to go, Brian edged in front and made every stride a winning one to come home a very worthy winner in a new course record of 14 mins 38 secs, beating the old mark of 14 mins 48 secs by Andrew Ledwith. This time by Andrew was also broken by Sergio who finished in a brilliant time of 14 mins 44 secs, two brilliant performances from two talented athletes. Then we had Thomas Hayes of (KCK) also running very well when 3rd in 15 mins 22 secs. Shane Mullaney of Thurles Cores was 4th in 16:17.while Tony Fogarty of Thurles Crokes was 5th in 16:35.
 
The ladies race was won by Angela McCann of Clonmel in 17 mins 59 secs with Aine Roche of Clonmel 2nd in 19 mins 2 secs. Marie Fitzgibbon of Thurles Crokes was 3rd in 19 mins 51 secs with Martina Ryan of Thurles Crokes 4th in 20 mins 32 secs.

Results of the Waterford Viking Marathon...Sat 29th June 2013

The 2nd Waterford Viking Marathon was held on Saturday, the 29th of June 2013 in what were pretty much ideal conditions. The weather at 9am for the start was overcast if a little humid with just a gentle breeze. By the time the sunshine had arrived, most of the Half-Marathon runners were finished while the full Marathon runners had to contend with the heat near Tramore on the coast and at the later stages back in the city.

As events go, it was well organised but a major issue this year was the fact that the course for both the Half and Full Marathon was too long. At the very start of the race, all of the runners did an out and back section along the quay in the centre of the city. Although the course was measured properly, the city council had an extra 150 metres or so of barriers put up which resulted in everyone running about 300 metres or 0.2 of a mile extra.

As soon as everyone ran through the 'real' one mile mark (where all the GPS watches started beeping) and then passed the actual sign 300m, it was a sign that something was amiss. When the following miles were out as well, a pattern began to form which showed that all of the mile markers were 0.2 miles out.

The problem at this stage was that most people didn't know about the mistake, just that the mile markers seemed wrong.  I don't think most people actually realised then that the course would be actually too long in the end.

Did it actually matter? For those who just wanted to 'get around' and complete their first half or full Marathon then probably not. For anyone going for a target time, it obviously did. Not only did they have to run an extra 0.2 miles but the fact that mile markers were out really didn't help.

Other than the distance error, the event was very well organised. Some of the good and bad points were...

Good....
1) Plenty of well stocked water stations with small bottles. Loads of gels on offer. Better than most other events.
2) Lots of the roads were closed and there was plenty of room for the runners, much better than say the Limerick Marathon in this respect.
3) The point where the Marathon and Half-Marathon fields divided was excellent. Well sign posted and runners notified well in advance...much better than the Cork Marathon.
4) Finish area on the track at the Regional Sports Centre was excellent. Plenty of space for people to sit down on the grass pitch afterwards with no shortage of water and bananas.
5) Tramore. Nice running along the waterfront with views of the ocean.

Bad...
1) Should have been better segregation of runners near the industrial estate in Tramore to allow more space for faster runners returning. As it was, runners going in opposite directions had to find their own space.

Overall.......Other than the distance error...and it was a major error, it was a well organised event. Some things need to be fine tuned but it was very positive overall. The problem however is that people tend to remember the mistakes more than the good points. In 2012, it was the dumb idea of having mile markers that said how many miles to go rather rather than how many miles actually completed which is the norm. In 2013, the course was 0.2 miles too long. The problem is that there are no shortage of events out there and people have plenty to choose from. Waterford people will always support their own event but if they want to attract people from outside the area, then the event needs to be seen as being run properly. It would be a shame if the distance mistake completely overshadowed all of the positives of the event as it has the potential to be regarded as a really excellent event..

Some stats...The numbers in the full Marathon were down by about one third this year, no doubt mainly due to the novelty of the first Marathon in Waterford in 2012. On the other hand, there has been a large increase in numbers in the Half-Marathon which were up 54%.

Notice...Old Abbey 5 km road race, Waterfall, Cork - Sun 30th June 2013

This 5k road race takes place to the south-west of Cork City on Sunday, the 30th of June at 7pm.

The 5 km route for the race goes from Waterfall to Goggins Hill. As can be seen from the map, the race is only a few miles to the South-West of Cork City.

The registration is in Goggins Hill with a bus taking runners to the start line in Waterfall.

The easiest way to get to Goggins Hill from the city is via Waterfall....

The turn off for Waterfall is about 300m north of the Bandon Road Roundabout. If you are coming from the direction of CUH then take the right at the fork in the road...

About 2.5 miles beyond Waterfall, you take a left at a crossroads. Gogginshill National School is just a short distance down this road on the right.

Race notice...Run Killarney Marathon, Half-Marathon and 10k - Sat 20th July 2013

Since it's inception, this event has evolved from year on year. At first, it was just the 15 mile 'Maxi-Marathon'. Over time, a Half-Marathon event was added and this year, a full Marathon option has been included.

The Marathon and the 13.1 mile Half-Marathon will start at 8:00am near Moll's Gap on the Kenmare road. The shorter 10k race will start near Muckross House in the park at 11am.

Entry for each race includes...Closed roads, Customised finisher medal, Technical T-shirt, Chip timing, Prizes, Massage at finish line, Hot and cold tubs & showers, Free post race party and BBQ, Officially measured course, Fully Marshalled route with water stops and medical safety cover throughout.

Full/Half Course description.......The race starts at about 800 feet above sea level near Moll's Gap. Initially it's flat but as you approach the Gap itself, the road starts to drop and you have a stunning view across to the Macgillycuddy's Reeks and the highest mountains in Ireland.

From here the road continues to drop as you run with lakes and mountains as a backdrop for the race..... Past Lady's View......Looking down on the Upper Lakes......and eventually you turn off into Killarney National Park near the entrance to Torc Waterfall.

The Half-Marathon then proceeds past Muckross House to the finish while the full Marathon continues on to take in another 13.1 miles in the northern part of the park before returning to the finish line.

As you can see from the maps above, there is a lot of downhill running in the first few miles. The 10k course takes in a shorter loop starting and finishing near the park.

The deadline for cheaper early bird entries to the FIT Magazine City Series 10k race in Cork has now been extended to the 30th of June. The race itself is in the Blackrock area of Cork city on Sunday, the 21st of July.

Weather Forecast for Munster...Fri 21st to Sun 23rd June 2013

Friday...Mainly dry at first on Friday with rain arriving from the west this afternoon in the western counties and in the eastern counties by this evening.

Saturday...Unsettled day with lots of shower as a low pressure system crosses over the north of the country. Rain heavier further north. 14 to 16 deg. Feeling cool for mid-June.

Sunday...Munster will see the best of the weather. Mainly dry with with the risk of showers. North-westerly winds will keep the temperatures in the mid teens.

Next week.......Signs that some more settled dryer weather might be on the way. Fingers crossed!

Thomas F Kiely...Olympic Champion 1904

Thomas Francis Kiely was born in 1869 in Ballyneale near the small town of Carrickon-Siur, County Tipperary, to a farming family. Being 6 ft. 2 inches (1:88 metres) tall, and weighing between 13 and 14 stone (82.5 - 88 kg), he started to compete in athletics at the age of 19, and excelled as a weight-thrower, jumper, and hurdler, By 1892, Kiely proved his ability by first winning the All-round Championship of Ireland, and a month later he won no less than seven national titles at the GAA Championships, beating among others Dan Shanahan (the world record holder) in the hop, step and jump, with a mark of 49 feet 7 inches (15.02 metres), a distance which was not exceeded in Olympic competition until 1924.

Over a long career, he won at least seventy (70) Irish and British championships and set world records for the 56 lb. weight and hammer throws - he was the first man to throw the hammer more than 160 feet (48.8 metres). Kiely won the (English) AAA hammer championship for five of the six years 1897 - 1902, losing only in 1900 to the great John Flanagan.

By the time of the Third Olympic Games in St.Louis in 1904, Kiely was 34 years of age, but was still the dominant all-round athlete in Ireland. He received an invitation to compete in St. Louis from the Irish-American Athletic Club and this invitation was widely reported in Irish newspapers. This came to the notice of the AAA, who offered to pay all his expenses if he competed as a member of the United Kingdom team. As an Irish nationalist, Tom Kiely declined both those offers and said that he would compete “for Tipperary and Ireland”. He sold some of the many prizes he had won and raised the fare.

In St. Louis, Kiely won the All-round event, a precursor of the decathlon with ten events held on one day, which happened to be Independence Day in the United States (July 4th, 1904).

After a long and active life, and having raised a family of three sons and five daughters, Thomas F. Kiely died in 1951.

Upcoming event...The Champion Kiely 5k road race, Ballyneale, Tipperary - Fri 28th June 2013

This 5 km road race is coming up in Ballyneale, South Tipperary on Friday, the 28th of June 2013 at 7:30pm.

Location...Ballyneale is about 3 miles / 5 kms to the north-west of Carrick-on-Suir.
If you are coming from Clonmel then take the N24 for Carrick-on-Suir. Look for the turn off left about 4 kms east of Kilsheelan.
From Carrick-on-Suir, take the R696 and look for the turn off left.

The village is well sign posted from the N24, N76 and R696 roads. Unusually however, the signs on the N76 and R696 refer to it as 'Ballyneill' while the sign posts on the N24 say 'Ballyneale'. Either way, it's one and the same village.

Ballyneale itself is a very small village consisting of a church, pub, school and several houses.

From the organisers.....Race registration will be from 6pm at the school. Parking is available at the community sports field, 800 metres from the school. The race starts 200 metres from the school and includes one full circuit of the village and finishing at the community sports field. Tea and refreshments will be served at the sportsfield.

The course itself is mostly flat and fast and is run mostly on quiet country roads. The elevation changes by only a few metres over it's length so there are essentially no real hills or drags. As 5k races go, this would be considered to be one of the fastest.

Race notice...Anglesboro 10k road race - Fri 28th June 2013

The first race in the Ballyhoura Limerick Road Race Series gets underway on Friday, the 28th of June with the Anglesboro 10k road race.

Located in the SE of Co.Limerick, this race is only about 6 miles or 10 kms to the north of Mitchelstown and is within easy access...

From the organisers......Athletics....There is a long and proud tradition of athletics in the 20 mile radius of the Galtee Mountains and in particular around Anglesboro. John Flanagan from the Martinstown Kilmallock area broke his own world record in the Olympic Games in London and was presented with a gold medal in 1908 as an American hammer thrower in the early days of Olympic Games. Also from the area was James J.Fahy (1880-1958) from Corderry, Galbally who in 1923 set a world record in the three standing jumps. He was known at the time as the Irish Kangaroo and his record remains unbroken to this day (40ft-3ins). He was a grand-uncle of the Race Series organiser Tom Blackburn from Galbally.

When the GAA was founded in 1884, it dealt with athletic events (track and field) as well.  In the very first year of the Association, there were only eight clubs affiliated to the Limerick County Board with Anglesboro being one of the first eight clubs. Pat McGrath from Lackendarra, Anglesboro, was a member of that club and he became the first Limerick man to win an all Ireland medal when he won the high jump and long jump at the all Ireland finals which were held in Tramore, Co. Waterford on 5th October 1885. He retained the high jump title in 1886 and was one of the Limerick delegates to the GAA annual congress in 1886 but little else is known about him. Another young man from Lackendarra, Anglesboro was J.J. Keane who gave a lifetime to the GAA and Athletics in particular. He left Anglesboro in 1880 and went to work in Dublin. In 1900, he was the All Ireland 120 yds Champion and helped found the N.A.C.A. (National Athletics and Cycling Association). He became it's president in the early 1920’s and was Ireland’s representative in the International Olympic Committee until 1952.  In the early 1920’s, he almost single handed got Ireland into the I.O.C. (International Olympic Committee). There was fierce opposition from America and Great Britain who were afraid that they would lose their Irish Athletes.

Sports always played a part in the life of Anglesboro with an Annual Sports Day held there every year until the mid 1960’s. These sports drew athletes from far and near. The commenced with a donkey derby from Annaslinga Cross to Anglesboro and also a cycle race from Mitchelstown to Anglesboro. They would also run a road race from Annaslinga to Anglesboro. These sports events were run by either the Liam Lynch Pipe Band of the Anglesboro Football Club. The day would finish with a dance held in the Club which was the highlight of the year. The Club is now Seamus and Mary Gordon’s home.  

Sports events are still a big part of Anglesboro where we have a walking group, cycle club, Community Games Committee.  There are cups named in memory of 10 sporting legends of the parish. There are two J.J. Keane Memorial Perpetual Cups which are presented to Premier County Under21 Football winners and 10k Road Race.  Anglesboro Community Council in conjunction with the Walking Club have succeeded in getting on the Ballyhoura 10k Road Race Series where the J.J. Keane Memorial Perpetual Cup will be presented to the first runner across the finish line on June 28th 2013.

Waterford Race notice...Dromana 5 mile road race - Fri 21st June 2013

The 21st Annual Dromana 5 mile road race takes place this coming Friday, June 21st at 8 pm in West Waterford. The race will start in the village of Villierstown and finish in the town of Cappoquin.

The Dungarvan Leader Dromana 5 is organised by West Waterford AC and is the 7th race of 10 in the Ger Wyley Sports/SKINS summer series. This is the last opportunity to enter this race series as entries close on Friday evening in Dromana.

Please note that this is a point to point race. A bus will depart Cappoquin from the GAA club grounds at 7 pm sharp to bring runners to Villierstown where the entries will be taken in the local community hall.

The entry fee is €5. Presentation of prizes is at Danny Flynn's Bar of Cappoquin.
There is a bonus of €100 to anyone breaking the course record...........Course record: Pauline Lambe 29.20 (2010) , John Treacy 23.49 (1999) .

Course....The race starts in the village of Villerstown itself. Initially, the going is easy but soon, the road begins to climb through a wooded section until it reaches the highest point around the 1.5 mile mark. After that, it drops down on the other side and then, it's reasonably flat for most of the way until there is a pull up to the finish line in Cappoquin.

One of the most unusual features of the course is of course Dromana Gate......

Described as follows........"A Hindu Gothic gate dating from around 1830. The gate was originally built from wood and papier mache to greet the owner of the Dromana Estate, Henry Villiers-Stuart and his wife, Theresia Pauline Ott of Vienna, on returning from their honeymoon in 1826. The couple were so enchanted with the gate it was reconstructed in stone in later years.

The gate structure was restored by the Irish Georgian Society in the 1960s and again by the Waterford County Council in 1990. The bridge over the Finisk River was replaced in 1971."

The 5 mile course is also famous for the fact that it was the route used by the Irish Olympic Silver medalist John Treacy in his youth when he used to run from school in Cappoquin to his home in Villierstown. Those early years of training would pay off with an Olympic Silver medal in 1984 by finishing second in the Marathon.

Overall.......A road race in a lovely scenic and quiet part of West Waterford. Nice quiet country roads with plenty of flat fast sections.

The race will start and finish on the Centre Park Road. The route goes down the Marina....past Blackrock Castle and onto the walkway by the waterfront. It then returns on the old railway track back to the finish line on Centre Park Road.

For anyone coming from outside Cork then see the map below...

The start and finish line is literally just a few hundred metres from the Pairc Ui Chaoimh GAA stadium which is in turn is about a mile or so east of the city centre.

In terms of difficulty, the course itself would be considered very fast. There is a small hill around the 1.5 mile mark before Blackrock Castle and a short sharp pull at 4 miles where the footbridge crosses the South Ring Road. Otherwise, the vast majority of the course is flat and fast. About 40% of the course is on public roads while the remaining 60% is on quiet walkways.

If you are interested then enter as soon as possible to avail of the cheaper entry.

If there are a number of you are from the same athletics club then you make sure you avail of the special club offer......either 20 entries for €300 or if you're a smaller club 10 entries for €150.

This race has an Athletics Ireland licence and has been accurately measured by Jones Counter. Chip timing will also be used.
