Waterford Viking Marathon event numbers jump 49% in 2023

The annual Waterford Viking Marathon event was held on Sunday 25th June 2023 with a total of 2066 people taking part over the three events. That represents a 49% increase on the overall numbers for 2022 and follows a general increase in race numbers post pandemic.

Marathon... The marathon this year saw a 39% increase in numbers and moved ahead of the pre-pandemic numbers for 2019. It'll be a challenge for the marathon numbers to get back to the numbers seen in the 2013-2017 time period.

Half-Marathon... This saw a 30% jump in numbers. It still has some way to go to get back to 1000+.

Quarter-Marathon... This one saw the strongest growth with an 84% jump in numbers. It'll be interesting to see if the quarter becomes the largest event in the years ahead. It certainly seems to be heading that way.

Gender breakdown... In terms of the gender breakdown per event, the shorter events had a higher percentage of women taking part. The percentage of women in the three events was as follows... Marathon (20%), Half-Marathon (34%) and Quarter-Marathon (58%).

Press Release: Records to break at Coillte 10k Road Race ...by Dundrum AC

Records to break at Coillte 10k Road Race

Wednesday the 5th of July at 8pm the Coillte 10k Road Race in Dundrum Co Tipperary will
be run for the 38th consecutive year by the local Dundrum Club. The race which started out as
part of a local long weekend festival which was so popular back in the eighties is still going
strong 38 years later.

This year’s official race starter is John Kelly, and it could not have been a more appropriate
choice. John been one of the founder members of the club back in 1960 and a top-class
sprinter winning County, Munster, and National titles in his day.

Race HQ is Dundrum Community Hall Eircode E34 EY28 where the club has its athletic facilities.
Race numbers can be collected there on the evening of the race. The race HQ is only 200
metres from the start and finish lines.

For an excellent guided tour of the course road by road Google the Running in Munster
Ireland Website
.

For Tipperary athletes there is the added incentive of the Tim Crowe Memorial trophy (kindly
donated by Dominic Moore) for the fastest Tipperary athlete to finish the 10k.Since this trophy
was introduced in 2010 in memory of an iconic athlete who hailed from Dundrum it has been won
by Danny Smith Ballynonty five times, Christopher Bracken Thurles Crokes once, David
Mansfield Clonmel twice, Kevin Moore Dundrum three times, Sergiu Ciobanu Clonliffe Harriers
once and present holder Evan Fitzgerald Clonmel. A cracking Tipperary County scoring six if you
had all of them togged out together.

The race which also incorporates a 5K for juniors (age between13years old on day of race
and19 years or under on 31/12/2023) one lap ran with the 10k two lapper. The race has prizes
in every category from Senior to over 70 years for both men and women. With the Master
categories at the standard five-year intervals from Over 40 years plus, with a specially
Embroidered Souvenir Hand Towel for all online entrants.

This year the club has once again linked up with Niall O’Sullivan’s Premier Timing Systems
for entries and result data to manage the ever-increasing numbers of runners every year.
Entries are online via the link https://eventmaster.ie/event/w752IPySRQ. The club would
appreciate it if participants could enter at least a week or two before the race date. Early
entry gives the organizers an idea of the number of embroidered dated towels required, plus
the food requirements for the big spread afterwards. Also, it is a big help to Niall for him to
get working on his system early.

The club is delighted to have Coillte once again as our main sponsor. Dundrum is surrounded
by trees and forest trails for running and walking developed by Coillte over the years. It is
appropriate that Coillte are involved with us in the healthy sport of running. The Company’s
managed forest trails around Dundrum and indeed around the Country are a haven for people to
get out for a bit of fresh air and exercise never more appreciated than during the recent Covid
lockdown. The semi-state company has been involved in this race every year since it was set up
in 1988, which is appreciated by the Dundrum club.

The planned village of Dundrum from the old Estate era and the two-lap course make it ideal
for spectators to view the race and encourage the athletes as the race progresses. One section
of the course in the village allows viewing of the race at four different locations by moving
about one hundred meters.

The race will be run over the usual flat two lap circuit with the lap consisting of a series of
five straights where one or two records are broken every year. Tanzanian international Daniel
Gidumbanda incredible time of 29:45 course record for the 10k has stood since 1997 which is
now over a quarter of a century ago. Irish Olympian Lizzie Lee Leevale smashed the
women’s course record in 2021 when running a super 33:45 for the classic distance.
Indeed, Lizzie’s great run that year and Angela McCann Clonmel super run and time of 37:21
in the same race set two National Irish Records for Over 40 and Over 50 women respectively.
A tremendous achievement by the two women and a confirmation of the two-lapper circuit
been a fast course.

For the record, the following are the course record holders over the Dundrum course.

Organised by Dundrum Athletic Club, this race is noted for being a flat fast course. As well of there being no hills, the course consists of multiple long straight sections rather than the more usual twists and turns. I've previewed many courses on this site but this one is really fast.

The map below shows where everything is. For spectators...note the points A, B and C. If you move between these points which are just over 100m apart you can see the athletes at approx. 0.25miles , 2.4miles, 3.2miles and again at 5.4miles.

Course Preview......The 10k course is essentially two laps of a 5k loop. A full preview of the course with maps, description, photos, etc can be seen HERE

Many races have different traditions. Some give out t-shirts, some mugs. In the case of the Coillte 10k, they give out a quality embroidered hand towel given to every finisher. and they have been doing this for over 20 years. Even on years where they had run out of towels on the night, they hand delivered them to these people in the following weeks.

The Tim Crowe Trophy is presented on the night to the first Tipperary Athlete in honour of his 24 national titles won in the early 1900s, who was from the village of Dundrum.

There is also a large spread of refreshments after race.

A local landowner has kindly allowed us to use his field .The car parking is free and will be stewarded on the day. Notice: Dromcollogher Carnival 4 mile road race, Co.Limerick - Mon 26th June 2023

The annual Dromcollogher Carnival 4 mile road race is coming up on Monday evening, the 26th of June 2023 at 8pm...

You can pre-enter online HERE

You can also enter on the night (€10 for runners and €5 for walkers).

As a race, it may not be as high profile as say those located closer to say Limerick or Cork City but it is an event with a lot of character and a long history. The race was originally started back in the time of the original running boom in the late 70's and early 80's by Christy Brosnan and Joe Quaid of North Cork AC. The original idea was for it to be part of the Dromcollogher Carnival which has been going since the 1940's and for the race to take place on Monday evening, a tradition that survives to this day.

In it's heyday, the race used to attract some of the top runners from all over Munster even though the prizes were always modest in comparison to other races at the time. On one occasion, Liam O'Brien from Cork won the race the day after winning the National 3000m steeplechase title! The triangle shaped course started and finished in the main square of the town much to the delight of the crowds. This did however mean that the race was in fact 'slightly' longer than the advertised 4 miles ;o)

One of the other unusual features of the race at the time was that the winner received a small porcelain figurine. One of the biggest employers at that time in the town was Irish Dresden, a German company which made high quality collectable porcelain items in the town which employed over 60 people, a huge number in what was and still is a rural area.

West Limerick AC are helping out with the organisation of the race and they are putting up a cup in memory of Christy Brosnan who unfortunately has now passed away. This replaces the old cup which was named after Marky O'Shea who used to run in the local races of the late 70's and early 80's barefoot, a long time before minimalist running and Vibram Five Fingers became all the rage ;o)

Getting there.....Dromcollogher is located to the west of Charleville near the Limerick - Cork border. If you are coming from say Limerick city then the easiest way is probably to head south towards Cork and turn off at Charleville and follow the directions for Newtownshandrum, Milford and Dromcollogher. If you are travelling north from Cork then turn off at Buttevant and go via Liscarroll.

As you enter the town from the east then you should see that the road forks into two where the central square is. Take the right here, drive a few hundred metres on what is a very straight road and you will pass the start line just opposite a service station. The GAA hall where the entries will be taken is just beyond this on the left.

The first 7kms of the course are near the river and pretty flat. Just before the 7km mark, there is a climb of about 30m over the next km.

The course then undulates a bit before dropping back down around the 12km mark. The last 9kms are flat which is just when you need it to be.
