Kerry...Results of the Valentia Half-Marathon - Sat 15th Sept 2012
The Valentia Half-Marathon was held on Saturday, the 15th of September and attracted a field of 205 runners, up from the 171 of 2011.
This year because of the local festival, the race started and finished in Chapeltown instead of Knightstown. The weather conditions were a bit of a mixed bag with everything from drizzle to sunshine but it really didn't take from the event.
It was obvious from talking to people and from the t-shirts that a good few of those who had turned out for the 2011 race had returned again this year which is always a good sign. It did however seem as if perhaps the event took a backward step this year. The race was organised by the local Triathlon club but it had a more commercial race feel about it.
Some things worked well on the day, some didn't. For example, there was a pre-race briefing which was a complete waste of time. Most people couldn't hear a word of what was said. The obvious place to issue instructions to the runners is at the start line where everyone is congregated.
The course itself was largely ok. It started near Chapeltown and then followed a nice quiet coastal road to Knightstown. There was plenty of support in the main town of the island and then began the long climb up to the quarry. It was a long climb but nothing too demanding. The scenery of the course along this stage was great and makes the route really special.
On the return journey back from the quarry, the course took a right on to an elevated road which ran for several miles along the island. This was without doubt the best part of the race. The view from here of the island, the mountains on the mainland, of the Blaskets and the Dingle Peninsula and of the Skelligs was magnificent. Without doubt, one of the main attractions of the race.
Once the course rejoined the main road near the bridge from the mainland however, the character of the race changed. There was a lot of traffic on this road and there was nothing in the way of traffic management. It was just a case of letting the runners and the cars sort it out for themselves which was a pity as the last two miles kind of spoiled what was up to then a very nice course.
Post race, for whatever reason, there was nothing in the way of post race refreshments. Water and bananas and that was it...which kind of seemed bizarre considering there was a large hall available. Instead, people were instructed to go to some pub elsewhere in the village for the prize giving......where nothing was provided either.
Conclusion....Overall, it had the feeling of being like a commercial race rather than being like a race organised by a club. Out of 5, I'd give it a 3.....i.e. fair but could do a lot better. The course was 80% ok but the last two miles were poor. They should really either change the time of the race or avoid the festival weekend. The dry fit top was of a good quality and there were plenty of water stations out along the course. Some people may not have like plastic cups but at least they prevent littering which happens with bottles. The worst aspect was probably the post race facilities....or lack of them. Sending everyone off to some local pub has a real Bally-go-backwards feel about it. Speaking to someone who did the race last year, it sounded as if was better then.
This race could be a real gem but based on the 2012 event, they have some way to go yet.

Kerry...Results of An Riocht AC 5k road race - Fri 14th Sept 2012
There was a huge turnout of nearly 380 runners for the third and final race in the An Riocht 5k Autumn Series. This is a big jump up from the 277 and 273 in the first two races. In terms of a 5k evening race in Kerry, these are huge numbers. Many of the 5k races in Killarney over the last 12 months only got around 100 runners so the Castleisland numbers as especially impressive.

Athletic Clubs in Clare by size...Aug 2012
A few days ago, Athletics Ireland released their figures for club membership. What they show is that in the last 15 months since May 2011, the number of adults in athletic clubs in Clare has increased from 207 to 285, a rise of 38%.
These are the athletic clubs in County Clare with more 10 or more adult members...
1) Ennis Track AC are now the largest club in Co.Clare with 63 adult members. They have grown by 31% in the last 15 months.
2) BMOH AC are a new club as a result of the amalgamation of the Bridge Milers and the Olympic Harriers. They jump straight into 2nd spot with 56 members.
3) The club in 3rd spot is another amalgamation of three clubs....Killmurray/Ibrickane/N Clare AC. They lose the top spot as they recorded a slight drop in numbers down 4% to 48 members.
4) Marian AC based in Ennis stayed more or less static with a drop of one member to 35.
As with Co.Limerick, at first glance some of the growth in club membership in Clare looks impressive but it is very low compared to other counties. In terms of club size relative to the available population, you could double the membership of all of the clubs in Clare and they would be roughly on a par with the clubs in Waterford.
Looking through the race calendar for the past few months, there has been plenty of runs in Co.Clare but a high percentage of them don't seem to be organised by athletic clubs. Having covered the results of races in Munster for the last few years, it's obvious that as a percentage, there are more fun runs, charity races and unlicensed races in Co.Clare than any of the other five counties in the province.
This perhaps might go some way towards explaining why club membership is so low in the county? If there are so many non-club races in the county then many runners may not even be aware of what athletic clubs are out there or what they can offer. On the upside, the figures do show that there is loads of potential for the clubs in Clare to grow.
Notice...some clubs have a large number of Fit4Life members, some are more into track and field, some are more focused on other specific areas. The figures don't say or suggest which club is best, just which club happens to have the most adult members....although it is probably fair to say that if a club has a lot of members then it must be doing something right.

Athletic Clubs in Limerick by size...Aug 2012
A few days ago, Athletics Ireland released their figures for club membership. What they show is that in the last 15 months since May 2011, the number of adults in athletic clubs in Limerick has increased from 287 to 393, a rise of 37%.
These are the athletic clubs in Limerick with more 10 or more adult members...
1) Dooneen AC are the largest club in the county with 105 members, an increase of 44% in the last 15 months.
2) Limerick AC now have 68 members, up 10% and stay in second spot.
3) West Limerick AC jump from from 41 to 64 adult members, an increase of 56% and move from 4th to 3rd largest club.
4) Limerick Country Club AC drop to 4th spot but still record a 25% increase in membership with 55 members.
5) The next three clubs all record an increase in membership......Bilboa AC at 39, Kilfinane AC at 19 and Kilmallock AC at 15.
While at first glance the growth in club membership in Limerick looks impressive, when you compare them to other counties then you begin to wonder why are they so small?
For example, the county of Limerick is in population terms the second highest in Munster after Cork. In terms of club membership, it is only ranked 5th out of the 6 counties. In fact, in terms of club size relative to the available population, you could double the membership of all of the clubs in Limerick and they would be roughly on a par with the clubs in Waterford.
Even looking through the race calendar, there are an obvious lack of races in Limerick relative to the other counties in Munster. There are obviously a lot of people running in Limerick as can be seen from events like the Great Limerick Run but for whatever reason, they don't see the need to join a club.
Looking forward, there is huge potential in Limerick for growth both in the number of races and in club membership. With Limerick County having a population of some 191,000, the clubs based near the city could certainly attract lots of new members if they wanted to.
Notice...Some clubs have a large number of Fit4Life members, some are more into track and field and some are more focused on other specific areas. The figures don't say or suggest which club is best, just which club happens to have the most adult members....although it is probably fair to say that if a club has a lot of members then it must be doing something right.

Athletic Clubs in Tipperary by size...Aug 2012
A few days ago, Athletics Ireland released their figures for club membership. What they show is that in the last 15 months since May 2011, the number of adults in athletic clubs in Tipperary has increased from 466 to 899, a huge rise of 93%. In fact, no other county of a similar size has grown so much. Many have grown by 20 to 50% but only Tipperary has gone way beyond that.
These are the athletic clubs in Tipperary with more 10 or more adult members...
The stats reveal that the huge growth in Tipperary numbers are mainly due to three clubs...
1) Clonmel AC have gone from 58 to 245 members in just 15 months to become the largest club in the county. This was no doubt due to a very active Fit4Life programme which attracted a lot of new members.
2) Thurles Crokes AC more than doubled their numbers going from 69 to 144 adult members.
3) Templemore AC is another club than have gone from a small base of 26 members to 130, a huge increase.
In terms of adult membership of athletic clubs and the size of the available population, Tipperary is percentage wise second only to Galway in the number of adult members. While it's probably unlikely that there will be the same level of growth in Tipperary in the next 15 months, the current club numbers are still at a very healthy level.
Notice...some clubs have a large number of Fit4Life members, some are more into track and field, some are more focused on other specific areas. Athletic Clubs in Kerry by size...Aug 2012
A few days ago, Athletics Ireland released their figures for club membership. What they show is that in the last 15 months since May 2011, the number of adults in athletic clubs in Kerry has increased from 342 to 446, a rise of 30%.
These are the athletic clubs in Kerry with more 9 or more adult members...
Notes...
1) Gneeveguilla retains it's top spot with 134 members, a rise of 19% on the May 2011 figure of 113.
2) Star of the Laune AC jump from just 8 adult members to 125 thanks to an active Fit4Life programme.
3) Farranfore Maine Valley AC also recorded a rise in adult membership going from 29 to 39 members.
4) The remaining clubs have remained more or less the same, some up a bit, some down.
In terms of adult membership of athletic clubs and the size of the available population, Kerry is about average compared to the other counties. What is perhaps unusual is how the bulk of the races and club membership tends to be based in mid Kerry near Killarney rather than further north near Tralee. The town of Tralee has a population of 24,000 people compared to Killarney with 14,000 yet the smaller town is a lot more active in terms of road races and running. There is probably plenty of scope for growth for clubs in the north of the county.

Athletic Clubs in Waterford by size...Aug 2012
A few days ago, Athletics Ireland released their figures for club membership. What they show is that the numbers of adults in athletics clubs have increased in all 26 counties except one...Waterford. In May 2011, some 502 adults were members of athletic clubs in the county of Waterford. By August 2012, it had dropped to 463 adults, a drop of 8%.
These are the athletic clubs in Waterford with more than 10 adult members...
Notes...
1) West Waterford AC are now the biggest club in Waterford with 209 adult members, an increase of 14% on the May 2011 figure of 183.
2) A big drop in Waterford AC numbers with a 35% decline from 213 to 138 adult members in just 15 months.
3) The remaining three clubs all recorded small increases in membership.
The two big clubs of course are West Waterford AC and Waterford AC. The numbers in West Waterford AC are remarkable in that they exceed the other two city based clubs combined. The main town in West Waterford is Dungarvan with a population of some 8,000 people. The other two clubs based in Waterford City have a population base of 47,000 to draw on yet they are significantly smaller. It does suggest however that with the current running boom, there is plenty of potential for the clubs in the east of the county to pick up new members if they want to.

Kerry...Results of An Riocht AC 5k road race, Castleisland...Fri 31st Aug 2012
The second race of three in the Riocht AC 5k series attracted a huge field of 273 runners, almost matching the 277 mark of the first race. In the last year or two, most 5k races in Kerry would have attracted a field of about 80-100 runners so getting 273 is way above average.
