Report from the oganisers...Carrick Road Runners AC...
The 2014 OutfieldSports.ie Three Counties Challenge got off to the perfect start on Friday evening last in the beautiful village of Faugheen when 168 runners lined up for the second annual Bobby Fitzgerald Accounting 5k road race. This series, now in its eighth year, takes in races over distances from 5k to 10k in the three neighbouring counties of Tipperary, Waterford and Kilkenny. The forecast heavy rain held off for the race and runners made the most of the perfect conditions on a very flat, fast course with many personal best times being set.
As the field entered the village for the first time after about 1.5 km, Sergiu Ciobanu (Clonliffe Harriers) and Niall Sheil (St. Killians) had already moved to the front and the Clonliffe athlete pulled clear over the second half of the race for a clear-cut victory. Sergiu's winning time of 15:02 was a new course record, eclipsing the 15:17 set by Sandis Bralitis in last year's inaugural Faugheen 5k. Niall Sheil ran very well to take second place in 15:35 and Stuart Maloney (Moore Abbey Milers) took third prize in 15:55. Carrick AC's first finisher was Pat O' Sullivan whose fifteenth place finish in 17:04 earned him first prize in the O/45 category.
Receiving the Gerry Moran Cup for wining the Faugheen 5 km is Sergiu Cibanou (Clonliff Harriers) from race sponsor Sinead Dunne (Booby Fitzgerald Acounting) and Series Sponsor Alan Treacy ( Outfield Sports.ie) |
Carrick AC would like to thank all who helped to make the race such a resounding success. We are particularly grateful to Bobby Fitzgerald for the generous race sponsorship by Fitzgerald Accounting, Carrick-on-Suir. The club would also like to thank Alan Treacy of Outfield Sports, Carrick-on-Suir, for the continued sponsorship of the overall series for the past eight years.
Receiving a Ron Hill T-shirt for winning the O-60 Catagory in the Faugheen 5KM is recent World Vets Champion Joe Gough (West Waterford AC) from race sponsor Sinead Dunne (Booby Fitzgerald Acounting) |
Thanks to the many volunteers who helped with parking, registration and results. The post-race refreshments and prize-giving in Flemings Bar were greatly enjoyed by all and thanks to Margaret Fleming for looking after everybody so well and to Elaine Walsh for providing the wonderful food.
The second race in this year's series will be the O' Neill Pharmacy Tom Jordan Memorial 5-mile race in Portlaw, Co. Waterford on Friday, 9th May at 7:30pm.

Tipperary...Results of the Clonmel 6k road race - Wed 23rd Apr 2014
The was the final race of the Clonmel 6k series and 270 runners took part, a jump of 8% on last years figure of 249 for the last race.
Report from Clonmel AC...... The Morrison BMW Cahir sponsored 6K road race series finished on a high last Wednesday night when 270 athletes competed in the 5th race of the series, the Lucky Dip format. Conditions were ideal with many athletes running PBs for the distance, a great way to end the series. Athletes running faster on the final night is always a sign of progress. In this race athletes were able to wear their watches. Maybe that was the reason for the fast times?
The athletes who won prizes on the night were Nigel O Flaherty, Aine Roche, Barry Horgan, Michael Freaney, Eamon Murphy, Emma Durand, Anna Byrne, Brendan Coffey, Aline Neumerzhitskaya, Yvonne O Connor, Kevin O Meara, Anne Marie Ryan, David O Mahoney, Daniel Costello, Anne Marie O Byrne and Karen Pollard. We would like to thank Lifestyles and Phoenix B for sponsoring some of these prizes.
This year's series was our best ever since we started this series of races back in 1982. The purpose of starting this series is as relevant today as it was back then. That aim was to introduce adults to running. At that time we had a very strong Juvenile element in the club while the Senior side of the Club was struggling for numbers. It's great to see the progress that this series has made over the past few years. In 2009, we had 187 athletes that competed in at least one race of the series while in 2014, we had 417 athletes who competed in at least one race. This showed that there was very little fall off each night. That can be seen in the very high number of teams who got a squad out each night and we had very few incomplete teams out of the 80 teams that competed in the team event.
The breakdown this year of entries was..........266 (practise run), 354 (1st race), 350 (2nd race), 325 (3rd race) and 270 (4th race) for the five events. This year the gender break down was 237 Men and 180 Women (43.2%). In 2009 we had 143 Men and 44 Women (23.5%) competing.
The presentation of prizes took place in the Post House and the club would like to thank Donal Daly and his staff for all their help in making the night a great occasion..for providing the Post Race refreshments and the Live Music. The club chairman, Frank Lynch also thanked our Sponsors, Morrison BMW Cahir for all their support. He also thanked the Gardai and the Civil Defence and the many club stewards that ensured the whole series of races went off smoothly. Gary Morrison of behalf of the Sponsors praised the Club for promoting a very successful series of races and they were delighted to be associated with this event and it was great to see it going from strength to strength.
The next race on the Club's calendar is the RUN4Fun in Cahir on Wednesday 30th April at 7.30pm and this event is also being sponsored by Morrison BMW Cahir for a very worthy cause Make a Wish Foundation. Entries will be taken at the Morrison BMW premises from 6 o clock onwards.

Tipperary notice...Faugheen 5k road race - Fri 25th Apr 2014
The Eight Annual 3 Counties Challenge gets underway on Friday, the 25th of April with the Faugheen 5k road race...a nice flat and fast 5k course in a rural setting.
Directions.......Faugheen is a very small village located to the North of the town of Carrick-on-Suir in S.Tipperary. It is located less than a mile off the R697 road which goes from Carrick-on-Suir to Kilkenny.
If you arrive in Carrick-on-Suir then follow the N24 road. In the centre of the town at the Garda station, take the R697 north. This will be signposted for Kilmaganny.
Keep the park on your right hand side. You then need to take the left at this junction below. Again, it's signposted for Kilmaganny.
From the junction above, it's 3.3 miles / 5.3 kms to the tun off for Faugheen. Look for the left hand turn which is on a wide sweeping bend to the right...
From here, it's about 1 km to Faugheen. Follow the directions for parking.
Entries on the night will be taken at the parish hall which is located next to the church...
Course....The race route is in the shape of a triangle. This is the same route as used by the famous Faugheen 50 Motor bike circuit...
As you can see from the map above, it's basically 1.5 loops of a circuit which is just over two miles in length. The start line is located about 0.9 miles from the village itself, ideal as part of the warm up for the race itself.
A full preview of the course with directions and photos can be seen HERE
Post race refreshments and prize giving at Flemings Pub...
More info from the organisers Carrick Road Runners AC...Carrick on Suir A.C.’s Outfieldsports.ie 3 Counties Challenge has firmly established itself in the South East running calendar since its inception in 2007, with the series growing from a single race with 100 runners to last year’s successful 5 race series with close on a thousand participants. One of the keys to their success has been the mix of good organisation, friendly atmosphere and good after race banter and grub - as well as really good road running courses!
So Friday 25th April will see the second running of the Faugheen 5Km Road race, kindly sponsored by Bobby Fitzgerald Accountants. This flat course will be held on the famous Faugheen 50 Motor bike circuit in the pretty Tipperary village, and is quickly become a runner’s favourite due to its flat, fast course .
Race start is 7:30 p.m. and registration will start from 6pm . However, you can avoid the queues by entering on line HERE (link to follow) . Entry fee is €10.00, but you can enter the 5 Race Series online for €40.00, saving yourself 20% on the series. Online Entry closes Thursday 24th April
So Friday 25th April will see the second running of the Faugheen 5Km Road race, kindly sponsored by Bobby Fitzgerald Accountants. Notice...Castleisland 10 mile road race, Kerry - Sun 11th May 2014
The annual 10 mile road race in Castleisland, Co.Kerry is coming up on Sunday the 11th of May...
Considering it's location, it's sure to attract a lot of runners from Kerry, west Limerick and the general west Munster region. Castleisland is only a short distance from Killarney and Tralee and the race should be of particular interest to runners there.
This race is organised by An RÃocht Athletic Club, one of the major clubs in the county.
Entries.......You can download the entry form HERE ...or you can enter online HERE
It's worth mentioning also that money raised from the road race will be used for maintenance of the outdoor track in Castleisland. It is the ONLY 400 metre track in Kerry and is used by athletes from clubs in Kerry and west Limerick. If children are going to be involved in the sport then they need access to proper local facilities like this. Perhaps for that reason alone, this race is worth supporting.
Previews....A preview of the 10 mile course can be seen HERE ....and the 5 km course HERE
From An RÃocht AC...An Riocht Lee Strand 10 mile and 5k...The third annual An Riocht Lee Strand 10 mile and 5k Road Race will this year be held on May 11th starting at 11am. Last year’s event was a huge success when seven hundred took part, creating an unrivalled atmosphere from start to finish with a great buzz as all participants finished on the track. Some of the people taking part will be experienced runners competing against each other and the clock, but the main body of participants will be those who will have their own personal goals, that may be improving on previous times for the event or conquering the distance for the first time. Either way, everybody is sure to have a great experience and will receive plenty of support from everyone.
An RÃocht are delighted to continue their great association with Lee Strand who have been very generous sponsors over a long period of time. We are also very happy to have Garvey’s on board as sub-sponsors. Legendary An RÃocht distance runner John Lenihan designed a ten-week training programme for those hoping to take on the 10 mile event. This can be followed on the An RÃocht Facebook page or on www.riocht.ie from Monday March 10th year we have an entry limit of 1,000 so make sure to enter in plenty of time. You can collect an entry form from the An RÃocht reception or online at www.riocht.ie. For any queries contact 087 7995647.

Clare...Results of the Kilnaboy 10 mile road race - Sun 13th Apr 2014
A total of 103 runners turned out for this years Kilnaboy 10 mile road race in Co.Clare. For a race with such a long history, the numbers are disappointing especially when compared to a few years ago. Obviously the demise of the Munster Ten-Mile Spring Classics Series has had a huge impact on numbers but it should still be getting more than it is at present.

Tipperary...Results of the Clonmel 6k race - Wed 9th Apr 2014
This was the second race of four in the Clonmel 6k inter firm road race series sponsored by Morrison BMW of Cahir. Another huge record crowd of 350 turned out for the race, down just four on the record of 354 a week ago. It is also up 19% on the 293 that turned out for the second race in the series last year.
Report from Clonmel AC.....The 2nd race of the very popular Morrison BMW Cahir 6k road race took place in ideal conditions with 350 athletes competing, making it the 2nd highest entry ever in the series, only last week's entry of 354 surpasses it. Once again thanks to the Gardai, the Civil Defence and the many Club stewards who ensured that the whole event was a brilliant success? Thanks also to the many captains who ensured that their teams were out in force.
Competition was very keen in all the 6 Divisions and looking at the tables with prizes for the 1st 3 teams in each of the Divisions there is still a lot of running still to be done to achieve a top three spot in any of the 6 Divisions.

Notice...Three Counties Challenge (Tipperary-Waterford-Kilkenny)...Apri-Aug 2014
The Outfield Sports 3 Counties Challenge is a popular race series which runs from April to August every year. Following the success of last year, the organisers Carrick-on-Suir AC have kept the same format with the same 5 races covering the three counties of Waterford, Tipperary and Kilkenny.
Location of race series.....within easy driving distance of Waterford, Dungarvan, Clonmel, Cashel, Thurles and Kilkenny.
Course previews....Faugheen 5k...Portlaw 5m...Deadmans 5m Carrick-on-Suir...Rathgormack 5m...Piltown 10k
Here is some additional info from Carrick-on-Suir AC.......
Carrick-on-Suir's Three-Counties Challenge has become firmly established in the South-East's running calendar since its inception in 2007. The series has grown from a single race with 100 runners to last year's record five-race series with more than a thousand participants. The eighth running of the series will once again start with a 5km race building up to 10km for the final event. This makes the series ideally suited to those who are new to running while also satisfying more experienced runners.
The 2014 series will start on Friday, 25th April with the second running of the Faugheen 5km road race, kindly sponsored by Bobby Fitzgerald Accountants. This race will be run over the well-known, flat route used for the Faugheen 50 motor bike races over the years and was the scene of many PB times in its very first running last year.
This will be followed closely by the O' Neill Pharmacy Tom Jordan Memorial Portlaw 5-mile road race on Friday, 9th May. This race, organised in conjunction with the Portlaw Red Cross, is run over another fast course and last year saw more than 250 entrants.
The third race in the series will see us return to County Tipperary for the ever-popular 'Deadman's 5' mile road race on Friday, 6th June at 7:30pm. Now in its ninth year, this race starts outside the beautiful Ormond Castle in the centre of Carrick-on-Suir, taking in a scenic route around the Deadman's Boreen (hence the name!) and finishing in a lovely straight stretch along the tree-lined town park.
The penultimate race of the series sees us return to County Waterford and the picturesque village of Rathgormack for the AutoPower Rathgormack 5 on Friday, 11th July. This challenging, undulating course is an ever-popular addition to the series, thanks mainly to the beautiful scenery of the Comeragh Mountains and the superb home cooking in the hiking centre after the race.
Finally, the series will end in County Kilkenny with the Morris Oil Piltown 10km road race on Friday, 1st August at 7:30pm. Another scenic trek, the race starts on the grounds of Kildalton Horticultural College and winds its way by the lake and tree-lined avenue before completing a circuit of the flat roads around Piltown. Another firm favourite in the series, 2014 will be the seventh running of this race.
The club is delighted to welcome back local specialist running store, Outfield Sports of Carrick-on-Suir as series sponsor for the eighth year ( now promoting the store's new website, hence the series title - the outfieldsports.ie 3 Counties Challenge). We are also delighted to announce that running brand Ron Hill are also involved as title sponsors. We are very grateful to our sponsors for their continued support and it is great to see the same businesses supporting our races year after year. As usual, the message from the club is for all series participants to return the support to these businesses who have been good enough to help us, despite the harsh economic climate.
The prize fund for the series will be in excess of €6,000 with prizes in all the usual age categories. There will also be a team prize for each race as well as numerous spot prizes. All races in the series have full AAI permits and are accurately measured. For further information on the series contact Mark (086-1608165) or Alan (051-641826).
