Race notice...Kilmallock 5 mile road race - Fri 23rd May 2014

The Kilmallock 5 mile road race is coming up on Friday the 23rd of May 2014 and its the second race on the Ballyhoura Limerick Race Series. This is a brand new race and is being organised by Kilmallock AC.

Details....Registration from 6pm at Deebert House hotel...Race Starts 7.30 Sharp...Prizes for 1st 2nd 3rd male and Female...1st O40 O50 O60 Male and Female...spot prizes and refreshments after.

Notes from series organiser Tom Blackburn....This Friday night Kilmallock AC will hold their first event as a newly formed running club, this is a club with a deep history in running. But for a couple of years the club disbanded and fell by the way, and it looked like it was gone forever. This year however it has been reformed, and with some help from Mike Reynolds and Tony Mc Mahon, who ran with the older club, and with the guidance of of a new committee led by their chairperson Simon Reynolds Kilmallock AC is back and at 7.30 pm Friday night 23rd of May Kilmallock AC will hold a 5 mile road race from the  Deebert  Hotel in Kilmallock. The club hope to have Jim Hogan on the night to start the race, Jim has been ill of late, but to anyone who knows the great Jim Hogan this will be a special treat. This promises to be a really good run as 4 miles of the course is the same as the Charleville half marathon, so it will be flat and fast. So get your racing flats on for Kilmallock on Friday night and start your weekend with a Ballyhoura Active series race .

Reg from 6pm in the Deebert Hotel Kilmallock. Tea/refreshments and prizes in the Deebert Hotel after.

From Kilmallock AC...It is with great honour that Kilmallock A.C. have Jim Hogan, the 1966 Gold Medal European Marathon Champion sounding the gun on the night to start the race. Jim, originally from Athlacca was born on 28th May 1933 and began his very successful running career at the age of 19. Jim now resides in Maria Gorettie Nursing Home in Kilmallock. What makes Jim Hogans achievements even greater is that he did all this while running bare footed

Report from Tom Blackburn of Mooreabbey Milers....Friday Night in Galbally saw a large crowd of runners gathering for the Mooreabbey Milers AC 5 mile road race. This was the second race in the Ballyhoura Active series and the first race in county Limerick. With 198 runners on the night, we were up 60 runners on last years race. There was a great buzz in the village as the race headed out the Tipperary road at 7.30 pm sharp. It was a beautiful evening and everyone was in good form. Local man Stuart Moloney from Mooreabbey Milers AC was an impressive winner in a time of 26.58, The course itself isn’t the fastest but he didn’t have it all his own way being chased hard by Declan Moore from Bilboa AC.

Tea, sandwiches and cakes were provided in the community center after, everyone ate their fill and went home happy after a lovely evening.

I would Like to thank everyone for supporting us on the night, this was a great start to our series and we hope that you will support the rest of the races in the series. We would like to thank our sponsors and all those who volunteered on the night.

Race report from Carrick Road Runners...O' Neill Pharmacy Tom Jordan Memorial Portlaw 5-miles
The second race of the 2014 Outfieldsports.ie Three Counties Challenge saw 170 runners line up for the O' Neill Pharmacy Tom Jordan Memorial 5-mile road race in Portlaw, County Waterford on Friday evening last. This was the sixth running of this very popular race and the second year in which it has formed part of the five-race series organised by Carrick-on-Suir AC. The race was started by West Waterford AC's Joe Gough, who has won numerous European Masters' titles and two World silver medals as well as holding the world O/60 record for 800m. Not only did Joe start the race but he also competed, finishing in twelfth place overall and winning the O/60 first prize.
Victory in this year's men's race went to Noel Murphy (Waterford AC) in 26:44.Noel saw off the challenge of Carrick-on-Suir native and Crusaders AC runner, Alban Coghlan who was runner-up in a time of 26:55 with Brian Swaby (Waterford AC) taking third in 27:15. First finisher from Carrick AC was Pat O' Sullivan in fourth place overall and first in the O/45 category.
The ladies' race was won by Clonmel AC runner, Angela McCann, fresh from her second-place finish at the Limerick City Marathon over the Bank Holiday . Angela finished in 30:58 with Sally Forristal (St. Josephs AC) in second and Orla Power in third. First lady finisher from Carrick AC was Emer O' Brien (37:04).
Carrick AC would like to thank all who helped make this year's event such a great success. Thanks to O' Neill Pharmacy, Portlaw for the generous race sponsorship and to Alan Treacy of Outfiel Sports, Carrick-on-Suir for the continued overall series sponsorship.
The Portlaw Red Cross team once again pulled out all the stops with their superb race organisation. It has been through the dedication and hard work of Brian Nugent and his Red Cross colleagues that the race has become so well-established on the race calendar.
A big thank-you to all of the race stewards who ensured the safety of all runners and to all who helped with race registration, timing, results and post-race refreshments at the Forge Bar.
The series moves back to County Tipperary next for the 'Deadman's 5' in Carrick-on-Suir on Friday, June 6th at 7:30pm.

...especially those in Waterford City which is only 14 miles / 22 kms away. Note that Portlaw is located just west of the R680 road which runs from Waterford City to Carrick-on-Suir...

Directions.......If you are coming from the North / Carrick-on-Suir side then look out for the turn right. You then keep following this road into the town....keep going straight...and you'll end up at the roundabout near the registration point.

If it's from the South / Waterford City side then take the left...

...and then you'll come to a T-junction where you turn right.....cross the bridge......and then take the first left.....

This will take you to the roundabout which is located at the western side of the town.

If you are coming from West Waterford then take the N25 east as far as Carroll's Cross Road, Ballyshonock........turn left at the old red/orange thatched cottage, which is signposted "L4022 Portlaw". The large QK Cold Storage plant is on the opposite side of the road. This road takes a shorter route to Portlaw.

There are a few places that you need to take note of...

1) Entries will be taken at the Heritage / Resource Centre which is located next to the roundabout.
2) Post race refreshments and prize giving is at the Forge Inn which is only about 600 metres away from the roundabout.
