Notice...Castleisland 10 mile race & 5k run - Sun 9th Apr 2017

The annual 10 mile road race & 5km run in Castleisland, Co.Kerry is coming up on Sunday the 9th of April 2017...

Considering its location, it is sure to attract a lot of runners from Kerry, west Limerick and the general west Munster region. Castleisland is only a short distance from Killarney and Tralee and the race should be of particular interest to runners there.

This race is organised by An Ríocht Athletic Club, one of the major clubs in the county.

You can enter and find a lot more info on the race website... http://castleisland10mile.wordpress.com/

It's worth mentioning also that money raised from the road race will be used for maintenance of the outdoor track in Castleisland. It is the ONLY 400 metre track in Kerry and is used by athletes from clubs in Kerry and west Limerick. If children are going to be involved in the sport then they need access to proper local facilities like this. Perhaps for that reason alone, this race is worth supporting.

Results of the Tralee Marathon...Sat 18th March 2017

The annual Tralee Marathon in Co.Kerry was held on Saturday the 18th of March 2017 on  what was a dry overcast day. As you can see from the chart above, the numbers were down again this year with the full marathon down 13% to 201 and the half-marathon down 28% to 277. This was off-set somewhat by a new 5k and 10k race which got 105 and 122 respectively.

There is probably a question mark over the long term viability of the full marathon as it's a lot of effort for just 200 runners. It's certainly a long way from 2013 when the two events attracted in excess of 1200 runners.

Kerry...Results of the Tralee Valentine's 10 mile road race - Sun 12th Feb 2017

Just catching up on some other recent results. The annual Valentine's 10 mile road race in Tralee was held on Sunday the 12th of February and attracted a field of 314 runners. While that's pretty reasonable as 10 mile races go in Kerry, it is over 28% down on last year which isn't great.

Notice...Clonmel AC 6km Road Race Series...Wed 22nd & 29th March & Wed 5th, 12th & 19th April 2017

Clonmel AC 6K Road Race Series...The Club is once again promoting the Clonmel A C 6K Road Race Series sponsored by Morrison Mini, Cahir. The Club would like to thank Morrison Motors of Cahir and especially Gary Morrison for their very generous sponsorship.

This year the races gets underway on Wednesday 22nd March at 6.15pm SHARP with a practice run over the route while the event itself gets underway on Wednesday 29th March and 5th,12th and 19th of April. On Wednesday 19th of April the race format will be “lucky dip” based on pre selected finishing positions.

For the Practice run on Wednesday 22nd March, athletes can wear their watches. They must also wear a High Viz. This year due to the large number of enquires we will have a Mass start, all athletes off together at 6:15pm Sharp due to the falling as the clocks don't go back until the following Sunday. So please note for this race - NO HIGH REFLECTIVE BIB - NO RUN. We have to impose that rule for everyone's safety, NO EXCEPTIONS.

We would ask all athletes to refrain from blocking up the entrance to LIDL and keep the main road free to traffic prior to each race.

Colaiste Cheitinn, the Mall is the race headquarters for each race and numbers can be collected there from 5.30 pm on the 22nd March (6:15pm start) and from 5.45pm on all the other nights with a 7pm start.

Now is the time to be organising your team of five athletes with the best three performances (athletes who are closest to their Predictions) to count each night.

The three races on March 29th and April 5th and 12th will see athletes predict their time each night when they enter and collect their number. They must then run the course without a watch or IPods.

If an athlete is caught wearing a watch or IPod, their team will be penalised.

This sort of competition allows every athlete to set their own pace and regardless of where they finish in the race they can all help their team to win the competition.

This is an event where you the athlete set the target, you decide every night what your finishing time is and then you have to run as close to that time to help your team. For instance you could predict 30 mins for the 6k and then run the race in 30 mins 1 second and you score one point for your team. Then you have another athlete on your team who predicts his finishing time as 21 mins and runs the race in 21 mins 31 secs, he score 31 points for the team. The three athletes that score the lowest points will count on your team, it is not based on your finishing position it is based on your time and what you predicted.

Last year's event was a brilliant success with 72 teams competing, which saw 334 athletes compete the 1st night, 336 athletes the 2nd night and 319 athletes the 3rd night. This event caters for all levels and last year we had athletes running the 6k from 20 mins 22 secs to 42 mins.

The Lucky Dip will take place on Wednesday 19th April.

The Presentation of Prizes will take place in Mulcahy's; Gladstone Street on Wednesday 19th April at 9.30pm where refreshments and music will be provided this was a brilliant night last year.

For further details please contact Niall O Sullivan at 086 1660888.
