Looking at the first year of parkruns in Co.Kerry...Sat 30th Jan 2016
2015 saw plenty of changes in the running scene in Co.Kerry with two new 5km parkruns starting up in the county. The first one to start was in Tralee on the 24th of January 2015 and this was followed by one in Killarney on the 6th of June 2015.
Tralee parkrun....The chart below shows the weekly numbers over the last year.....
Since it has started, the Tralee parkrun has had 1327 registered runners to date with an average of 112.1 per week. As you can see from the chart, there was an initial surge of interest which then settled down over the Summer months and picked up again over the Autumn. The recent surge is no doubt due to the publicity from the Operation Transformation TV programme.
Looking back about 5-10 years, there was almost a complete lack of any races in the Tralee area in marked contrast to what was happening in Killarney. In the last few years, there have been new commercial races organised by Run the Kingdom but at €20 a pop with medals and dry fit tops, they're not for everyone. It's not all doom and gloom however as no doubt the free weekly parkruns will introduce a lot of people to running and some of them will in time go on to run in the some the longer events like the Tralee Marathon and Half-Marathon organised by the same company.
Killarney parkrun.....The chart below shows the weekly numbers...
The numbers in Killarney have been lower with an average of 42.1 runners per week. A total of 535 registered runners have taken part in the event since it started last June. As you can see from the chart, there was the initial surge due to the novelty factor. This stabilised about about 30-40 over the Autumn but it was hit badly by the wet weather in December. The recent surge is again due to the Operation Transformation TV programme.
One point of interest is that the average of 42.1 in Killarney is in marked contrast to the 112.1 average in Tralee. The town of Tralee has population of about 24k which is 1.7 times the size of Killarney. The parkrun average in Tralee is 2.7 times larger than that of Killarney. As for why the large difference? Perhaps there are several....more choice of modest priced races near Killarney? The fact that the parkrun in Killarney is about 3 miles south of the town centre? The marked difference between race prices in Tralee and the free parkrun?
Third parkrun??......Is there scope for another parkrun in the county? The thing about Co.Kerry is that Tralee and Killarney are really the main population centres and the other towns are quite small. If Killarney with a population of 14k2 has only an average of 42.1 runners per week then would a third parkrun get enough people to justify it? In terms of population, the third largest town is Listowel with 4,800 inhabitants which is about one third the size of Killarney. However if the examples in Cork have shown anything then it's that a parkrun can pop up just about anywhere.

Looking ahead to the 2016 Dungarvan 10 mile road race...Sun 31st Jan 2016
The big race in Munster this weekend of course is the Dungarvan 10 mile road race. This sold out months ago and the entry list can be seen HERE
First off, the weather forecast looks a bit mixed. There is likely to be rain in the morning as a front passes over but it should be largely out of the way by the time the race starts. Behind the front, there will be strong westerly winds which will keep the temperatures in the low teens. There may be a chance of showers at race time but hopefully, the worst of it will have passed. All going well, it will hopefully be just overcast, mild and windy.
In the past, the Dungarvan 10 has been noted for freezing cold winds. Not this time around. If you are racing then a singlet or a short sleeve dry fit top should be enough.
As for the course, it is the same as last year which involved some changes. The updated preview can be seen here... http://munsterraceroutes.blogspot.ie/2013/03/waterford009.html
The course map is shown below. The strong wind is likely to be a factor betweens miles 1 & 2 and 3 & 5. It will be behind the runners for a lot of the course.

Clonmel AC are holding their usual 4k Series on 5 evenings in January and February 2016. There is no requirement to pre-register, just turn up on the night.
From Clonmel AC......Clonmel Athletic Club 4k Series sponsored by BARLO MOTOR GROUP

Clonmel AC are delighted to have this popular series of races sponsored by the Barlo Motor Group again this year. We are delighted to announce with the help of the Barlo Motor Group that everyone that competes in the series of races will have an opportunity to win the use of a new car for a week, so Five weeks, Five Cars. Last Year’s lucky winners were Aine Hayes, Patrick O Gorman, Gillian Prendergast, Noel Curran and Amanda Williams.
This series of races takes place on Wednesday 13th, 20th, 27th of January as well as on the 3rd and 10th of February. On Wednesday 17th of February we will have our Charity Run. The 4k event will start at 7pm sharp each night. The Race format for Race One will be Lucky Dip. Here we will have pre selected finishing positions and the lucky people that cross the finishing line in these positions will win a prize, one of them will be the use of a new car from the Barlo Motor Group, for one week.
Entries will be taken on the night of each race at the Brothers of Charity car park, Silversprings from 6.15pm onwards with the entry fee of €4.

Report from Clonmel AC......Great performances at the Barlo Motor Group race 3
We again had a brilliant entry of 168 athletes on what was a good night for running, cold but dry and it was great to some impressive performances, indeed from week one it is great looking down through the results to see athletes improving at all levels. We will do a report on the performances to date in a later report. As regards the times tonight anyone wearing numbers 1 to 99 should have gone off with the first group and likewise athletes wearing numbers 100 to 199 should have gone off with group Two and Group Three was for all athletes who were wearing numbers 200 plus. I say this because I then deducted 20 seconds off any athlete in Group Two and I took 40 seconds off anyone in Group Three as we had stagger starts. It is up to the athlete to stay in the Group that their number is for.
The race format for tonight's race was again Lucky Dip and the Lucky winners were as follows: Mark Corcoran, Damien O Keeffe, Gerry Burgess, Peter Kiely, Michael O Sullivan, Paul Higgins, Michelle Lonergan, Pat Tobin, Caitriona O Flynn, Bernie Walsh, Yvonne Doheny, Carmel Long and the Lucky winner of the use of a New Car from the Barlo Motor Group was Catherine Delahunty.
Tonight's race was won by Colm Ryan in 14 mins 34 secs with Gareth McGlinchey 2nd in 15 mins 9 secs and Lar Martin 3rd in 15 mins 11 secs. The top three Women finishers were Anne Marie Boland 1st in 16 mins 31 secs, 2nd Kealey Tideswell 16 mins 33 secs and 3rd Linda Grogan 16 mins 38 secs.
Just a reminder that Race 6, the Charity Race, of this year's series, on February 17th, is in aid of SERT (South East Radiotherapy Trust) , a very worthy cause. This service provides free transport for seven patients 260 days of the year to Oncology Treatment at UPMC Hospital, Whitfield, Waterford on a completely voluntary basis. Transport is provided at no cost to the patient and relies on voluntary contribution to cover transport replacement, motor tax, insurance and maintenance. All Administration, including Driving is done on a totally voluntary basis, nobody is paid, so a very worthy cause. So all monies donated and collected at our 4K on Wednesday 17th February will go to this very worthy cause, so spread the word.

Report from Clonmel AC......Barlo Motor Group Race 2 report...Near record entry at 4K race
The 2nd race of the Barlo Motor Group 4K series took place on the 20th of January in reasonably good conditions and there were 193 athletes competing, which is brilliant. The record entry at the moment stands at 198 set on the 5th November 2014 while the 12th November 2014 equals last night's entry.
It is brilliant to see such an entry as this series of races caters for all levels of fitness. The main thing is to train at your own pace and also run at your own pace and we saw last night athletes making great progress on all levels right throughout the race. Looking at the results, please note that we allocated your place on your finishing time and please take into account that we had a staggered start with Group One athletes going off at zero seconds, Group Two going off at minus 28 secs and Group Three going off at minus 48 secs.
It was great last night to see everyone wearing a High Viz, No High Viz No Run is our Rule for your Safety. Please note that we will start the race at 7pm each night so allow time to register, so come as early as possible.
Last night's race Format was Lucky Dip and here we had Pre Selected Finishing positions drawn before the race and the lucky winners were Liam Morrissey, Bobby Jarabek, Vincent McHugh, Adrian Lonergan, Liam Cooney, Michelle Lonergan, Shane Jackson, Siobhan Roche, Tracey Gibson, Norma Sorohan, Claire Wilkinson and Helen Gillman. Jason Burke was the Lucky winner of the use of a New car from our sponsors, Barlo Motor group for the week.
In last night's race the top 3 men finishers were Jimmy Boland in 14 mins 2 secs, Colm Ryan 14 mins 35 secs and Michael J Ryan 14 mins 49 secs. The top 3 women finishers were Clare Annan 15 mins 18 secs, 2nd was Aine Roche in 16 mins 8 secs and 3rd Linda Grogan in 16 mins 37 secs.
The Club would like to thank the Brothers of Charity for the use of their car park as race Headquarters and the Civil Defence for looking after First Aid. The Club would also like to thank our many stewards who helped at taking entries and ensuring the route was safe for all the participants.
The Club has also decided to award kms to anyone on a team that helps with taking entries, stewarding at the following events, our 4k races, our 6k races, the Annerville 10K, the Boston Scientific Half Marathon and our St Stephen's Day 4 miler. We are finding it increasingly hard to get stewards for our events and without our stewards these events couldn't take place. So hopefully this new initiative will encourage athletes to give us a helping hand at any of the above mentioned events. To qualify you must let us know a week in advance of such help, coming along on the day or night of the event and offering help won't do.

It is worth noting that anyone who runs in this series of races and any other races before the end of February and who joins a team before the end of February will have these kms allotted to their total, so keep on running and start thinking about organising teams. We will also help athletes to form teams if they submit their names but the real fun in this Challenge to form a team among your friends and work mates and the banter throughout the year will be great.

Report from Clonmel AC......The first race saw the start of the eagerly awaited Barlo Motor group 4K series. Conditions were very good for running - dry and cold. The start was delayed a while due to the huge numbers that entered on the night...170 in total, brilliant to see them all running so well. Well done to all our stewards who ensured that the route was safe for all participants and thanks to the Civil Defence for looking at the First Aid. The Club would also like to thank the Brothers of Charity for the use of their car park as the Race Headquarters.
The race format was lucky dip where athletes who finished in Pre determined positions were the Luck winners. Tonight's winners were Brian Looram 7th in 16 mins 1 sec, Vincent McHugh 23rd in 17 mins 22 secs, Robert Dower 34th in 17 mins 49 secs, Jane English 57th in 19 mins 13 secs, Brendan O Keeffe 64th in 19 mins 29 secs, Helen Linnane 75th in 19 mins 58 secs, Mellissa McCarthy was the Lucky athlete who won the use of a New Car from Barlo Motor Group when finishing 89th in 20 mins 54 secs, Maureen Kelly 97th in 21 mins 19secs, Marie Laste 113th in 23 mins 2 secs, Elaine Begley 125th in 24 mins 14 secs, David O Mahoney 137th in 24 mins 55 secs and Tina Whelan 158th in 26 mins 59 secs.

The 2016 South Tipp Physio 500K Team Challenge........promoted by Clonmel AC
The South Tipp Physio 500K Team Challenge...promoted by Clonmel AC
From Niall O'Sullivan of Clonmel AC........Welcome to the Clonmel A C 500k Team Challenge sponsored by the South Tipp Physio. Over the year, Clonmel Athletic Club will promote 28 events during 2016 consisting of 12 races over 4k, 6 races over 5k, 5 races over 6k, 2 races over 6.4k, 2 races over 8k, 2 races over 10k and a Half Marathon (21K), a total of 165kms.
Full list of races HERE
A team consists of 5 athletes and this Challenge is open to everyone, Joggers, Fun Runners and athletes, Club and non club alike and it is a team effort to achieve the 500km. This Challenge is achievable especially by someone who is only starting to take up running as the longest distance you have to run is 6K to achieve the 100k. As a team effort we would encourage each member to try and run as many Km as possible to achieve the 500K Challenge, the GOAL of the team is to run 500K in 2016 with all team members contributing to the final total.
This Challenge is open to everyone and it is not the pace that matters but the number of Kilometres that you can achieve at your own pace over the next 12 months. Doing this challenge as part of a team is a great motivator and all team members can play their part in cajoling and tormenting their fellow team members out to train and participate in the listed events. Achieving this Challenge with your friends, hopefully you will all still be friends at the end of 2016, is a brilliant experience and I have no doubt there will be plenty of laughs and fun along the way and to help you along the way we will have a Special award for all our Achievers.
There is no entry fee for this Challenge and we would ask the team captains to submit their teams by the end of February 2016. So let’s start working on the teams, maybe some of your work colleagues and friends might be interested in this Challenge.
If you want any more information on this Challenge, please contact Niall O Sullivan at 086 1660888.

Limerick...Results of the Caherdavin 5 mile & 10 mile race - Sat 26th Dec 2015
The numbers for this event were down 23% this year with 174 taking part compared to 227 in 2014. No doubt the wet weather was a factor in this.
There was also some problem with a turn around point on the course which might be the reason for the slower than usual 5 mile times.
