Notice: Clonmel 4 mile road race in Tipperary - Thurs 26th Dec 2019
The big race in Tipperary over the Christmas period is the annual 4 mile race in Clonmel on Thursday the 26th of December 2019.
From the organisers Clonmel AC...MSD 4 Mile – St Stephen’s Day, 12 Noon
This very popular race takes place again on St Stephen’s Day, the 31st promotion of this event. The Club is very grateful to MSD for sponsoring this year’s event. The Club started promoting this event in 1989 to encourage people to participate in the Sport over the festive season. As such we have seen it grown in stature over the years and it is now firmly established in the athletics calendar, as it caters for all levels of fitness.
Race Registration will be taken on the day at Colaiste Cheitinn, the Mall from 10am onwards. The entry fee is 10 Euros. The route is relatively flat and is noted for fast times.
This year there will be Prizes for the following categories, Men: 1st 5 Men, 1st 2 0/40, 0/45, 0/50, 1st 0/55, 0/60, 0/65, 0/70 and 0/75 plus 1st 2 Junior Men. The list of Prizes for the Ladies is as follows: the 1st 5 Senior Ladies, 1st 2 0/35, 0/40, 0/45, 1st 0/50 0/55 and 0/60 plus 1st 2 Junior Ladies.
There will also be some great Spot Prizes for down the field finishers to be won, so come along and participate in a great Sporting event. This is an ideal event to raise funds for local charities.
There will also be Post Race Refreshments in the Colaiste Cheitinn, the mall afterwards as well as the Presentation of the Prize Awards.
There will also be Post Race Refreshments in the Vocational School. This year’s event will be Chip timed by Premier Timing Systems. This event has an Athletics Ireland Race Permit.
The entry Fee is 10 Euros. Enquiries to Niall at 086 1660888.

IMPORTANT WATERFORD AC HALF MARATHON ROUTE INFORMATION
IMPORTANT WATERFORD AC HALF MARATHON ROUTE INFORMATION
Some weeks ago we were made aware of the commencement of road works on the Lacken Road at mile 7 of our half marathon route. We have been engaged with Waterford City & County Council since and although the road is closed to the public our plan had still been that the route could be run as normal. Unfortunately now due to circumstances outside of our control this is not possible. Following meetings with An Garda Siochana and Waterford City & County Council they have supported us in devising an alternative route. We understand this is short notice but we were however conscious we wanted to avoid a postponement or cancellation of the event especially for the many participants travelling from outside the county. Our sincere thanks to the team that have helped us find a solution. We will now continue to work with An Garda Siochana and Waterford City & County Council to make the necessary adjustments to our health and safety plan.
Link to the route: https://www.mappedometer.com/?maproute=775694
High level route description as follows:

Entering Ballybeg drive towards the Waterford City Fire Station

Turning right on to the Outer Ring Road for 1.4 miles

Clare: Sixmilebridge Marathon event cancelled
Every year in November, a race series is held in the village in Sixmilebridge. Co Clare and it usually consists of a half-marathon, a full marathon and an ultra marathon. It consisted of multiple loops on a one-mile circuit in the village.
Perhaps it's just a sign of the times but it has been cancelled this year due to lack of interest.
On the 1st of November, the organisers said it was 'filling up fast'?!?! Then on the 5th, it was announced that they might have to cancel it. And finally on the 9th of November, it was cancelled.
It had been due to take place on the 17th of November.
From the BMOH Facebook page....
1 Nov... Registration is filling up fast, every year we have let’s request from people looking for a place, we are limited to 200 participant, please book early to avoid disappointment....
5 Nov... Hi Everyone, Registration numbers are well down this year, if numbers do not significantly increase before Friday November 8th, We will unfortunately need to CANCEL this years event which we do not want to do, so if you are planning to run but have not registered yet , please do so before Friday. Thanks BMOH AC Committee
9 Nov 2019.... 2019 Bridge Loops CANCELLED. we are disappointed to inform all Athletes who have registered that this years event is cancelled due to low numbers. Apart from turning it into a loss making event for the Club, we also felt the low numbers would take from the atmosphere that is always created around the course when we have 200 people running. The Club will look to host some form of running event in 2020 to help bring top class runners back into our village. Again, we are very sorry to share this unfortunate news this evening. From West Waterford AC....Wednesday October 30th sees the registration take place for the 2019/20 26th Annual Forde’s Daybreak winter league which will be run over 13 weeks and organised by West Waterford athletic club.
The event for those few who are not familiar with it caters for all types of runners and especially for those that have never ran before, we provide plenty of advice and encouragement so please don’t feel that you might be the only person trying it for the first time as guaranteed there will be many coming along again this year for the very first time just like you.
There are 2 distances to choose from and they are commonly known as the long route 5.4 miles and the short route 2.3.miles.
Come along on the night and register for whichever route you wish to do. Please bare in mind that you are not stuck with the course you choose at the start, if you wish to change after a while then you may do so. We will be available to answer any questions you may have tonight or any other night.
There is no official run on registration night, however many people do run the course but there will be no stewards on the course until round 1 which is the official start of the league. If you can’t register on registration night, you can do so the following week or any other night but we do urge as many as possible to come along and register in order to speed up proceedings for the following week. Your cooperation with this matter is much appreciated.
Once-off registration fee of €5
When you register, there will be a fee of €5 to cover the cost of the waterproof number and timing chip attached. This number and chip will be issued to you and you only and it will be your number for the duration of the 13 week league so it’s most important that you have it and wear it every Wednesday night, please pin it to the front of your bib only. This is a once-off fee, payable on the night you get your number and then after that it will be just €2 each night that you run for members and €3 for non-members.
Last year we introduced a once off payment for the entire league and this was taken up by half of all winter league runners who save themselves some money by doing so. For WWAC club members you can pay 30 euro (this includes the 5 euro once off number payment) and for non members you can pay a once off payment of 40 euro which also includes the 5 euro number payment charge.

Notice: Run in the Dark 5k & 10k in University of Limerick - Wed 13th Nov 2019
This years Run in the Dark event is being held in multiple locations around the country including one at the University of Limerick Campus.
From the organisers...Run in the Dark Limerick – Join us for a 5k or 10k run on 13th November
Run in the Dark Limerick takes place on Wednesday the 13th November 2019 at 8.00pm. Every November, as darkness sweeps the globe, thousands of people in 50 cities across the world will pull on their running shoes and red flashing armbands and hit the streets to Run in the Dark.
We know there are lots of running events out there, so why choose Run in the Dark?!
Apart from being a unique night run taking place in iconic locations around the world, there’s also an important cause fuelling this fundraising run. Run in the Dark is a global running movement helping to cure paralysis in our lifetime.
Run in the Dark is organised by the Mark Pollock Trust, named after blind Irish adventure athlete Mark Pollock. Unbroken by blindness in 1998, Mark Pollock suffered a catastrophic spinal cord injury in 2010 when he fell from a second story window that left him paralysed. As Mark strives to walk again, his most complex journey is ahead of him – to find a cure for paralysis.
By taking part in Run in the Dark you are enabling ground-breaking collaborations and research which could change the lives of millions of paralysed people around the world.
Every donation, every step, every study, moves us towards a cure for paralysis and enabling people to walk again.

THE ROUTE:
The route leaves the UL Boathouse and heads back towards the University - there is a wide cycle path as an alternate to the road. At the LERO roundabout turn left and continue towards the bridge. Take the canal path down to the riverbank and turn left. Continue following the path to the turn point. On return, turn right at the boathouse to return to the start point.
Whether you are completing the 5km run or 10km run, please aim to arrive at 19.30 (7.30pm) so that we can ensure everyone will receive their flashing armband and buff and have a group photo before we go running!

A look at the 2019 Waterford Viking Marathon numbers
The Waterford Viking Marathon started in 2012 and the numbers for each of the events so far are shown above.
Marathon.... As a new marathon in the county, a lot of Waterford natives did it the first year. In 2018, the full marathon had to be cancelled due to the heat. In 2019, it had its lowest ever number of finishers. Perhaps a sign that the flagship event is in decline?
Half-Marathon... This reached a peak in 2017. It has declined since then but at nearly 1,000 finishers is still a very healthy number.
Quarter..... This started in 2014 and the 6.05 mile option has proved to be popular. Like the half, it peaked in 2917 and has declined since. Still a respectable number of finishers in 2019.

Guest Post : JIM HONOURED FOR HIS STEWARDING SERVICES ...by John Walshe
JIM HONOURED FOR HIS STEWARDING SERVICES... by John Walshe
At last night’s GSK 5-Mile road race in Dungarvan, the penultimate event in the Intersport Elverys/Asics Summer Series, a special presentation was made to Jim Veale to mark his many years stewarding at West Waterford events.
Jim – father of James, a man so associated with athletics not only locally but on an international level – has been involved with the club since its formation back in 1994. He is an ever-regular at all the local races and in particular at the club’s famous Winter League which takes in 13 Wednesday nights from October to February.
Whatever the winter weather, be it hail, rain or snow, Jim has be there in his fluorescent jacket making sure the runners make their way in safety around the streets of Dungarvan. He is seen here receiving his presentation from Gerry Cantwell, another loyal servant and athlete with the West Waterford club over the years.

A look at the Three Counties Race Series
The annual Three Counties Race Series is organised by Carrick Road Runners and has been going for over 10 years. There are currently 4 races in the series and they are held in Tipperary, Waterford and Kilkenny.
The 2019 series finished up recently and this is what the numbers for each race looks like...
The numbers for the Piltown 10k this year were well up which helped offset the drop in numbers for the Faugheen 5k and Portlaw 5 mile.
If we look at the current four races in the series and work out an average for them over the years, this is the chart we get...
As can be seen, there was a big drop from 2013 to 2017 but it seems to have stabilised since then.
All the results of the races in the series for 2019 can be found on the Carrick Road Runners website.
